Videssos #4

Swords of the Legion

Rate this book
In Videssos the city, tribune Marcus Scaurus was bored. The legion that had been magically transported to this strange world was far away. But the Emperor’s niece Alypia was near—and willing.

When their secret trysts were betrayed, Emperor Thorisin Gavras was forced to condemn Marcus as a traitor—but with a promise of freedom and Alypia, if he could reclaim a rebel province from a fanatic usurper, with no military aid. With only centurion Gaius Philippus, Marcus set out to try the seemingly impossible task.

But the fates conspired against them, driving them further westward, into the innermost sanctum of Videssos’ great enemy Yezd—and toward the torture chambers of the evil, deathless wizard-prince Avshar.

But behind them, without orders, the men of the legion were on the march!

Harry Turtledove attended UCLA, where he received a Ph.D. in Byzantine history in 1977.

Boh.

If you like the "displaced person in another world" stories then this is the series for you. Now we get an entire legion of roman soldiers, oh and one crazed Celt, on another world. Throw in that magic works there and you have a fantastic story and some awesome characters. Turtledove is one of my top 5 favorite writers. My highest recommendation.

Finally finished the last of the cycle. So many characters, so many odd names. Turtledove does a great job of keeping up with them. I struggled a bit. But then I never had keen interest in this tale.

I am quite a logophile but I confess that Turtledove pulls out many words that I've never heard before. An impressive feat! I was pleased with each, and astonished at several.

But my break is over; back to poetry.

Good ending to this quartet of books. The Byzantine maneuvering concludes, at least for this storyline. In real life that sort of thing never ends. Satisfying wrap up of all the plot lines and situating the characters. Good character studies through out. All in all a good set of books to read, but start with the first of the four.

A good finish for this series. Unfortunately, in a fit of impatience I looked up a plot summary before I got to this book and so I spent most of the book wondering when and how the final climax would come... and was sort of disappointed by it as a result. Overall, this was a good book, and a nice wrapup, if a bit... typical. The good guy gets the girl and proper recognition for his efforts, but there are still plenty of potential threats and whatever to run a sequel series from, if needed. Instead, Turtledove went and did a totally different series from way before this one, which I'm not sure I want to read or not.

Loved this series and the idea of a lost Roman unit transported through dimensions. There was a lot of politics to go through but it was an excellent story with plenty of detail for the imagination. I hope that future books build off this series, possibly on the children of the emperor and the Romans. I was a little sad the writer did not sort out what happened to certain family members at the end but again I hope that's a possible tie in for another series to build off of this one to progress the videssos timeline.

Consigliato caldamente.

The Romans and their allies get caught up in some side quests while in pusuit of their main target, the Evil Wizard Avshar.

This one was for me not as good as the previous volumes. A few too many happy coincidences, a coule of unnecessary conplications that simply seemed to pad out the page length, and a very pat ending.

Still, it has been an enjoyable ride all up.

Rated M for violence, supernatural themes, adult themes and a couple of sex scenes. 3/5

Overall, I loved this series. Turtledove started well and kept it up through four books. If I can say one thing bad, it was a like a long car chase in some European movies. It is almost too much of what you like to see. But I liked the series very much as a whole.

absolutely fantastic series of books, great blend of fantasy with historical elements, still don't think Turtledove has bettered the Videssos series

The 4th book ends the serious nicely. No real surprises, but a good solid story.
