First Rule of Demon Calling: Don't

Lucinda Dent never planned to call demons. She wasn’t stupid, after all. She’d seen what the addiction had done to her mother. But her mother has been gone for ten years, sucked into hell by a demon, and all Lucinda has left is her grandmother and the house she grew up in. Who could blame her for using the only thing her mother gave her, a talent for demon calling, to save them?

Lucinda teams up with an old friend and together they set up business, calling demons. But soon things go terribly wrong.

Lucinda is a daring and somewhat clueless character who does the unthinkable in order to impress friends, satisfy her own curiosities, and fit in at a strange high school. Ah, teenagers.

This is definitely a young YA novel, not just because of the plot elements, but also because of the youngish and rather simplified writing style. The story gets better as it goes along, but it requires some patience the first several chapters.

We have misunderstood characters who stand out at school, which made me think of a little (I can’t help it) of Twilight. We don’t get glittering vampires but we get unusual male love interests that are a little eye-rolling but still fun in a guilty pleasure, soap-opera kind of way.

The story isn’t particularly complex but it does attempt to be. The story has a small cliffhanger of sorts. The story is straightforward but worth a read if you like YA books set in high school settings with demons of sort milling around. The heroine makes plenty of mistakes, almost unapologetically.

Characters start out a little too uncomplicated but some of them surprisingly develop stronger roots, especially Lucinda’s friend and her conflicts with her sexual orientation. The demon lords are a bit cheesy but I couldn’t look away from the scenes since it’s still fun stuff.

It’s gritty with its dark touches for a YA book, so YA fans should enjoy the book well enough.

It's well known the particular circumstance: persona (in this instance, a teenaged young lady) makes a decision to call some sort of satanic force: catastrophe arises. The experience is based on precisely how this particular demon-summoning-disaster story takes a different approach coming from all other demon-summoning-disaster stories, and Devoti provides in fantastic as well as unpredicted methods. From the very first, the lady meanders around specifics in which add more interesting depth: by way of example, our heroine's mum have also been a demon-caller however got hooked on it; a great deal of teenage years is all about danger, therefore, the appeal along with real danger of demon-calling itself, aside from exactly how shifty as well as disgusting the devils can be, turns into a persistent concept on numerous ranges. Devoti's personalities are not any cardboard cut-outs, neither the human beings nor the devils. Many of them develop, usually painfully, while others fall under the "more will likely be unveiled" classification. To sum up, the level of sensitivity as well as consideration, and a lot more than a handful of interesting turns, make this a gratifying reading encounter pertaining to grownups along with teenagers.

Lucinda did not inherit much from her mother, but she can call demons. Of course she never did since it was demons who caused her mother to disappear. But when she and her grandmother are in danger of losing their home, Lucinda decides on a plan to call a demon but not make any direct deals with the demon. Nothing can possibly go wrong. Right?

I enjoyed this book about friendship, family and trying to take the easy way out. There is action and demon hunting. But it is more about relationships and growing up. Lucinda is an interesting character even though I would like to shake her sometimes. I think older teens would really enjoy this book as well as older folks like me who like a good paranormal high school story.

Lucinda Dent can call demons, just like her mother could. But with it, one can also become addicted to the power it takes to call them. Her mother has been gone for ten years, sucked into hell by a demon, and all Lucinda has left is her grandmother and the house she grew up in.

Lucinda teams up with an old friend and together they set up business, calling demons. But soon things go terribly wrong.

Holy shit, where's the sequel?!

I have to admit it was the cover that initially drew me to the book as I am a cover artist second to being a writer. The photo interested me, but at the same time I thought: "Man this needs a new cover design and better font." Lol.

Beyond the cover, the story is more interesting then I thought it would be. I've read other urban fantasies that were more about demons than the other supernatural creatures that one usually finds cluttered in such books. But this was a nice find. I paid my $.99 cents for the e-book and disappeared in my room to read.
By the time I finished reading and looked over at the clock it was 4:30AM! I hadn't even noticed the time slipping by.

Its got a nice bit of dark grit and shows that demons are not to be trifled with or trusted, despite their pretty faces. Truly a great read. Now...I just don't want to have to wait for a sequel!

I liked the book description so gave it a shot as also have enjoyed other paranormals penned by the author in the past. Lucinda Dent however left me hot and cold throughout the book, torn between wishing she would get a clue and hoping she would not end up like her mother before her.

The fact is when you have access to certain power it is for sure not always a good idea to ignore what has happened to others who have fallen to it's lure, in this case it was obvious from the start that young Lucinda was in way over her head and only dug the hole deeper the more she tried to fix her mistakes.

Sad thing is by the end it was very apparent that she had not learned her lesson well enough to keep her from committing another mistake in the future.

For me this actually did not come as a surprise because like all teens before her lessons learned only teach someone who is willing to pay attention and apparently Miss Dent is willing to ignore what her head knows is best when her heart wants something else.

Loved this book!
Demon High was a great read. The language and sexual situations were a bit saltier than in many other young adults I've read but that seemed in keeping with the writer's gritty style. I really liked the main character. She lived up to her mistakes even when she knew it would cost her. Something often missing in YA books. The only thing I did not care for was the abrupt ending and the fact that it was clearly a set up for a sequel, otherwise great read.

3.5-3.75 stars.

I’d like to know why the hell the chick on the cover of the book has long blond hair when the character is described as having short blond hair (it looks short on the front but on the back you can see it's simply pushed to the side)? Especially since the author was most likely in charge of every aspect of the creation of the book, as it is self-published. It just really bugs me when the person or persons on the cover of a book do not match the description of the characters inside.

And one other nitpicky thing. We’re not in England and Lucinda’s not English, so what the was with all the “Mums” flying around? I know some people in America call their mothers this but for some reason in this book whenever I saw it, it made me grit my teeth. Hard.

For the most part, I enjoyed the story and the plot, which was pretty straightforward. Girl summons demon, girl releases multiple demons, develops the hots for one unfeeling demon and has to track down and stop a former serial killer, now a demon loosed on the 21st century (BTW, I was shocked when I saw the name of the person, kind of interesting, though, definitely a great demon).

While I liked it, I did have a couple of issues with parts of the story. I found it curious that Brittney didn’t even bat an eye when Lucinda asked her if she knew anyone who might want to see a demon. Really? Because if someone asked me that I wouldn’t calmly follow them and talk about a business transaction, I’d think they were batshit crazy and run as fast and far away as humanly possible.

I also thought it was strange that, since Lucinda’s mom has been missing since she was a child, presumably taken after calling one too many demons, and finding out the house she shares with her ailing grandmother, which sounds like a POS, is possibly going to be foreclosed, her first thought is to turn to calling demons. And she does it fairly well without having any practice or really doing any reading about the subject. Her only experience with it is that her mom disappeared when she was six because she summoned demons.

The characters were pretty good. I know this doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement for reading this book, but I didn’t really find myself rooting for anyone. I liked Brittney and how she supported Lucinda and stuck with her . Lucinda was fine, though nothing really stood out about her for me. She wasn’t too tough, too wimpy, too clumsy or any of the other things we usually see overdone in YA books. I guess she was fairly normal, though sort of stupid for dealing with demons seeing as how she knows what they’re capable of doing. I thought her grandmother acted more like her great-grandmother. She just seemed ancient with all sorts of health problems and was pretty out of touch with what was going on in her granddaughter’s life and kind of apathetic about life in general, given her propensity to hide her head in the sand where finances and pretty much everything else was concerned. Oscar was the best character for me, maybe because we really don’t know too much about him or what his motivations are. We do find out a good deal of his history and why he is the way he is, but I think there’s a lot more to his story. I also found the higher demons interesting .

Finally, I was a bit confused about

Overall, I thought this was a good book. It was a rather different read than I’m used to with YA books, a touch grittier, though not because of outrageous sex scenes or anything like that (though there is some manhandling that goes on in the book), it just seemed more adult in spots.

I have no idea if Devoto plans on turning this into a series, but I would be interested in finding out what else happens with Lucinda, Oscar and Brittney. Even Kobal and his brother. Not so much Nellie. I’ll certainly check out the sequel if there is one.

Plot Overview:

There are demons attending Caldera High.

How does Lucinda Dent know?

Because she's the one who called them and accidently set them loose.

Lucinda knew it was a bad idea to call demons - her Mom disappeared ten years ago after dabbling in demon calling for too long. She's seen what it can do but with the bank about to foreclose on the only home she's ever know, Lucinda needs to find some quick cash.

She and the local `acquisitions expert' at her school work out a way to make some money putting on a `unique' show for those who can pay. When it all goes horribly wrong Lucinda finds herself in way over her head. Now she needs to clean up the mess she's made, before she loses her heart, her soul, her life or all of the above.

What I thought:

I think that Demon High was a decent enough book, it was not the best book I've read and I had a few issues with it but I liked the story well enough. I did think the name could have been better, Demon High just makes it seem like it would be a much lighter kind of book where it is in fact in the dark paranormal spectrum. It is of course Young Adult, the characters are in high school as the name suggests. I think that it's one that still reads as a teenage book (albeit one with mature themes and language) but as an adult I still enjoyed it.

I have seen two cover art pictures for this book, the cover art with the girl with the long hair and white dress along with the name really lets the book down. I liked the one with the girl with the short blond hair and dark eye makeup, I think it might be a later one, and it is much more appropriate to the tone of the book. I'm glad it was the first one I saw as I may not have given it a chance on the first one.

I have been trying to figure out just what it was that made this book not as enjoyable as others I have read. It was a combination of a few things which I will outline below but I do want to note that I did think it had some good qualities and I would not be reviewing it here if I did not think it was worth reading.

First off it was a bit slow starting, and then even once the demons were called and let loose it was all a bit underwhelming. I felt that it did not really get interesting until they were finally tracking down the bad guy. For me that part was the best, it was where the characters really shone and I began to get into the book. In the beginning there was a lot of new information dropped that was not accompanied by much of an explanation. I know that it's hard to find a balance and the beginning was slow enough to start off with but some things need to be set up when introducing a new world - we need to know the lingo and the parameters.

Secondly Lucinda, I did not connect with her as a main character, she just seemed a little flat and lacking depth to me. I never `got' how she fell in love like she was supposed to be, it was just never explained enough for me to really feel it. On the other hand I really liked the character of Brittany; she was tough and I thought she was fresh and funny. I liked that she was a bit on the shady side which seemed incongruous with her perky popular girl personality.

I saw that on other reviews a lot of people did not like the ending; I had no issues with it. I think that a lot of people reading may be too caught up in happy endings. I liked that this played out more `realistically' if I can use that term when talking about paranormal fantasy. Of course you have to suspend disbelief for most of the storyline but the human elements and plot continuity still need to work. The world that was created by the author told us demons were bad news, if it had ended all happy fluffy bunnies I would have been disappointed.

Final Comments:

Overall I liked the story, it was compelling and dark. I would certainly give another book in the series a chance just to see where it goes and perhaps it will improve on the aspects I did not find as appealing.

Lucinda lives with her Nana in a falling down house. It's the family home and neither one can imagine moving. One day Lucinda reads a letter from the bank - they owe back taxes and the house is in disrepair. While Nana disappears to 'talk to people', Lucinda comes up with a plan to save the house.

Lucinda's family are Demonologists - Demon Callers. Well, some of them are. Nana's mother was and Lucinda's mother is...was... Nana refuses to let Lucinda even talk about it. It's dangerous work and addicting. Lucinda's mom disappeared years ago while calling demons.

Lucinda knows she can make money off calling demons. She calls on her ex-friend, Brittany. Brittany acquires things for college kids, in return she gets to hang out with them. The girls strike a deal: Brittany will get paying customers, Lucinda will call up a fairly harmless demon, keep it controlled, dismiss it and then they get paid.

It seems like a great plan...it always does...but ofcourse there are issues. So now there are demons roaming the halls at Caldera High and, even worse, Lucinda might be falling in love with one of them.

A pretty good story, although I felt let down by the ending. I can only assume that there will be a sequel to answer all my questions. I think that part of my letdown might be because I'm a big fan of Kim Harrison's adult series The Hollows. That involves demon calling and all the details...this one wasn't quite as good, but then this is YA, not adult. :) Lucinda really starts to come across as fascinating and tough, but never really makes it there. Brittany is a little more interesting and one of the demons is pretty good.

We seriously need half stars. I'd give this a 3.5!

In Devoti's Demon High Lucinda Dent knows she shouldn't call demons. It's in her blood, but it's also how her mother disappeared. It became an addiction that quickly and literally made her life hell, but now she's in danger of losing the only two things she has left - her house and her grandmother. So, Lucinda decides to put her talents as a demonologists to use JUST to make some quick cash. Of course, she'll be careful, but when you're dealing with demons, that's easier said than done. Soon, Lucinda finds herself in over her head. This book pulled me in from the start. The characters are interesting and the plot gets better and better as it slowly unfolds. I read it at night and I've gotta say that there were parts where I felt like I was in a horror movie and might be the next character to go. Lucinda starts off a little shy and reserved, but really starts to open up and become stronger over the course of the story. Her friend Brittany is tough and funny. I also liked the two demons that came along for the ride, especially Oscar. The ending was a little abrupt, but good. All in all, I had a great time reading this and I wouldn't mind a sequel.

First, this isn't for the weak at heart or squeamish for that matter there are parts that some may find disturbing. That being said I enjoyed this book not because I'm sick and twisted but the story line held me.

Did I like the ending well I'll have to see the rest that are to come, because I am just sad it ended like it did.

Lucinda lives with her nana in a home that is falling down around them, but it's the only home she's known and the one her mother disappeared from ten years earlier. Her mother was a demonoligist and as finances get more dire Lucinda resolves to follow her mom but not get so caught up she can't get out.

From the start things don't go as planned and as an old friend is drug into the fray things get more complicated. Then come trouble and Oscar to boot. Oh you'll be right there with Lucinda wanting him to not be bad, but wishing won't make it so. He does have some redeeming qualities so worry not you'll love the demon bad boy he is even while he doesn't appear bad but remember appearance are deceiving. And Oscar IS hiding something.

Will Lucinda and her friend Brittany survive? Ahh now there is the question and what constitutes survival.

This was a decent book. It's not the greatest, nor the worst, although I feel like I'm leaning towards not really liking it.

The story was alright. Being that it was a paranormal, suspension of disbelief is standard, but there also has to be a bit of believability. I didn't connect to this, nor was I sucked it. There were so many times I wanted to skip whole chunks of chapters, but didn't. I couldn't follow at times, and honestly, I just got bored. I've not liked books before, but never have I been bored.

Lucinda was alright. I could feel her conflict about her past and what she was doing with the demons. Other than that, I didn't really like her. I also didn't feel like she fell in love, like the description said. Frankly, I didn't even see that at all, other than occasional moments where Lucinda mentioned having strange feelings. The only character I liked was Brittany, and her banter with Lucinda. Brittany was funny and just so connivingly awesome, she saved this book from utter dislike.

We all know the scenario: character (in this case, a teenaged girl) decides to summon a demon: disaster ensues. The adventure lies in how this demon-summoning-disaster tale is different from all other demon-summoning-disaster tales, and Devoti delivers in wonderful and unexpected ways. From the very first, she weaves in details that add depth: for example, our heroine's mother was also a demon-caller but got addicted to it; much of adolescence is about risk, so the lure and danger of demon-calling itself, apart from how treacherous and vile the demons themselves are, becomes a recurrent theme on many levels. Devoti's characters are no cardboard cut-outs, neither the humans nor the demons. Some of them grow, often painfully, and others fall into the "more will be revealed" category. All in all, the sensitivity and thoughtfulness, plus more than a few fascinating twists, make this a satisfying reading experience for adults as well as teens.

So, Demon High. First off, let me start by saying, that I am not too sure on my 3 star rating, but I think I am going to keep it. Now, what I really liked about this book, was it was something different. Not a book about vampires, not a love story, but a book about demons and a monologist. Sounds awesome no? Well, yes and no. I really liked the main character, Lucinda, who was pretty much take charge throughout the entire novel. Brittney was a pretty awesome sidekick as well. Lori Devoti did a great job bringing the book to life and had some pretty decent characters along the way. I can't quite pin point where I lost interest in the novel, but somewhere along the line it happened. When I finished the book, I was left feeling quite "meh, I could have gone with not reading the book, but I am glad that I did."

This book was brilliant-couldn't fault it.... until the end.
The ending is so rushed and leaves a lot of unanswered questions. There is too much room for a sequel. It would be a brilliant first book if the author intended to make it into a series but as it isnt it just leaves you frustrated and angry!
It all leads up to this one big plot and then in everything in the few final pages goes bam, her mothers gone, the love of her lifehas been taken by demons and all shes left with is her friend a necklace and a gran who knows nothing.
GREAT.

Well, I'm not sure as to my 3 star rating, but I'm going to keep it that way for now. I seriously considered giving it four stars, however I was extremely let down by the ending of the book. In this book I would love to see a sequel, or even a prequel to show us a little glimpse of Lucinda's mother. The author really did a great job, it's a well written book, I just wish the ending were better. I might even bump it up to four stars if I knew there would be a sequel :)

I loved, loved, loved this book! The characters are sympathetic, relatable, and realistic. The world-building is very believable, the plot holds together well, and MAN, when you get to Chapters 15-18 or so, the tension is SKY HIGH!!! This is my favorite book by Lori!
