The Secret Pleasures of Menopause is a groundbreaking book that is long overdue! Christiane Northrup, M.D., delivers a breakthrough message that will help millions and millions of perimenopausal and menopausal women just like you understand that at menopause . . . life has just begun! It is the beginning of a very exciting and fulfilling time, full of pleasure beyond your wildest dreams! Dr. Northrup believes that it's time for you to step forward and learn to enjoy the best years of your life! Even though studies show that menopause doesn't decrease libido, ease of reaching orgasm, or sexual satisfaction, the majority of menopausal women aren't experiencing the pleasure and sexual satisfaction that is their birthright. It is a long-held misconception that menopause signals "the beginning of the end," and nothing could be further from the truth. In this fascinating book, Dr. Northrup candidly guides you toward experiencing life after 50 as the most pleasurable time of your life!
A feel-good book for middle class women who seem to be continually obsessed with the best shampoo and the prettiest clothes. Gimme a break! Where is the powerful she-goddess of post menopause? Where are the women who don't care a flip what people think? Where are the women who are using their power to empower and change the world?
As a woman of 46 in my first year of Menopause.. it was a delight to read this uplifting, encouraging and supportive book... I wholeheartedly recommend this to ALL women... to educate us that it isn't the 'end of the world' because we've reached menopause. Let's embrace and celebrate this significant stage of our life and love ourselves for being...WOMAN! Thanks to Dr Northrup once again for a welcome informative read.
I can't even give this a 1 star. She's the Joel Osteen of menopause. According to her, just think happy thoughts & everything will be ok. I had hoped for better information. Wasted my money on this book, that's for sure.
Give "50 shades of grey the flick", this book will be enjoyed by all 40 plus women ensuring that their sex life will be a dominate part of their lives. Move over men the new generation of emotionally strong women are reaching menopause and enjoying every moment of it
This short book by a pioneer in women's health busts many of the myths that plague over forty women in American society.
Dr. Northrup is a board certified OB/GYN whose mind/body and spiritual work is the cornerstone for healthy women everywhere. She is my go-to for solid information that is hard to get anyplace else. Don’t worry she has plenty of recommendations where to find similar useful information if you don’t come across it in the mainstream.
Though she has written several books on the subject of menopause, this short book focuses on debunking disempowering and demoralizing societal views on an aging woman’s sexuality and what they are capable of while offering useful suggestions on how to “use it” not “lose it”, no partner required (but great if you do have one). She offers a lot of information, tips, tricks, and suggestions. Feel free to choose what interests you and leave the rest or maybe come back to it later. It’s so much more than just intercourse and orgasms, more like a sensual feast for all the senses.
I’ll admit some of the language is overly flowery and somewhat ridiculous sounding to my ears (like the Meryl Streep character’s dialogue in She-Devil) and honestly, talking nicely to my clitoris while looking at it in a mirror is a stretch and did earn a few snickers from my immature self. Nonetheless, The Secret Pleasures of Menopause should disavow women of the ridiculous false notions that an ignorant society tries to foist upon us and that alone is worth the read.
I liked this book but by the way it's written, I'm beginning to think I'm the only woman who had a decent view of sexuality BEFORE perimenopause.
I wanted more information on hormones, mood swings and health but I got a book about how to feel sexy after menopause. Am I the only woman who doesn't expect a man to turn her on? If I was to judge by this book, I'd assume that most of the female population has been waiting around for their men to take on that task for the last 35 years.
This book was amazing, it had me laughing, and inspired. Gave me things to really consider, and explore about myself and the choices that I make. It confirmed my beliefs of what aging means to me Being confident, independent, giving, strong, enthusiastic and optimistic
The book would be good for any woman regardless of their age. It has very little on Menopause and a lot in self esteem, self pleasure, finding owns true happiness.
I love this author and loved her book THE WISDOM OF MENOPAUSE but I did not find anything special about this book that I didn’t already know. It’s a quick easy read for maybe a little refresher.
Nitric oxide, nitric oxide, nitric oxide, happy, happy, happy, nitric oxide, YAY!!!...... (A fair synopsis of this book)
Yes, nitric oxide is very important, and yes, gathering a career-worth of data on nitric oxide action and the cloning of the nitric oxide synthase genes and the description of the function of the different isoforms of nitric oxide synthase is worthy of a Nobel prize (not that Northrup did this). However, Northrup seems willing to attribute all the good in life to nitric oxide. I tried to soldier forth through this book, but in the end, Northrup wore me down and I tapped out.
If you're not too critical and would like a little menopausal pick-me-up, this book is for you!
very uplifting, if you are 50+ it will give you a jolt of energy, Gives lots of ideas on putting your mature wisdom to good use, to gain pleasure or make something of your creativity. Liked the discussion of increase in convictions as women age, knowing what we believe and having a passion to do something about it.
I am reading the book and is hilarious ....LOL...a lot of good writing and life experiences combine with a nice guide from Dr Northrup..what a pleasuring reading I can say that is the good natural way to open close minds of so many in a very relaxing way without shame and worry ....great book...almost done in 2 days ....<3
I'd highly recommend this one for women headed towards or at this stage of life (and for others who live with them). It provides very healthy insights on this stage of our lives and focuses attention on the positives--a refreshing approach!
Well, there are a few things that I disagree with but for the most part, this is all about feeling good about yourself and your life and the world around you. I would actually give this 4.5 stars because a feel good book while proceeding through menopause is EXACTLY what I need!
Any of my friends that are in my "age group" or their husbands should read this book! It is a fantastic look into what happens to a woman (mind and body) when she goes through this very important time in her life.
Just regular insights of being positive expected more. Not worth the cost in my opinion. Didn't finish it. Thought it would be more about healthy supplements.
Es un libro muy informativo, apto para todos que los que quieran entender este tema de un punto de vista más amigable, y sacar de su mente el prejuicio de que en la menopausia las mujeres no pueden ser felices.
Dr. Christine Northrup recommends "self-cultivation" for women to raise beneficial chemicals in the body that keeps us youthful and vital. In other words, pleasuring ourselves leads to a more joyful life. Hmmm, that's if I can get past religious guilt.
Some pointers on positive thinking. A bit of medical but for the most part, it was a mind over matter session. My takeaway is that she advises you can think away menopause symptoms which I don't agree with. I did love the "life isn't over" "you probably have another 40 years to live" message.
Easy read. It is all about more joy. I like the science behind joy and pleasure... release nitric oxide. Written to counter the social messages that women are unworthy and undeserving of pleasure and sensuality and that menopause is a process of withering.
I can't believe I forgot to rate this book. I started listening to this book and it just came off as so silly and trite that I stopped after about the first hour.
