Z asked me to read more nonfiction as a way to study. So here it is. And this is a great, short introduction to how to care for soil for any gardeners out there.
One of the most stunning things I learned in this book came at the very end in talking about soil diseases. "Beneficial bacteria produce chemicals that actually inhibit the growth of disease-causing microbes. These wonder compounds are known as antibiotics (penicillin and streptomycin were first obtained from soil organisms)." I knew having bacteria was good, but didn't realize the chemical component.
