Trenton Innocent Barnes receives a life sentence for his role in the execution of a rival enemy. With the help from his family, he is determined not to let that stop him. Enter youngest sibling Prentice who has a promising future, getting ready to graduate from college and plays football for a local semi-pro team. Unfortunately for Prentice, he has been given the sole responsibility by his brother and ailing father to not only take over the family business, but convince his newly-acquired crew and enemies that he is up to the challenge. Choices have been made. Sides have been chosen. What will be the end result? Clearly a page turner and a storyline that will keep the reader s eyes wide with anticipation, REPRESENT is not only about two brothers and the choices they make. It is about family honor, the inner strength to avoid peer pressure and the repercussions of ill-fated choices. This most recent novel by David L. tackles everything from police corruption to deception amongst peers with precision and accuracy.
David L., author and publisher, holds a Bachelors Degree in Communications and Human Relations and a Masters Degree in Social Work with a concentration in clinical administration.
His first release entitled “Over Your Dead Body” is set in present-day New York, written in character-specific dialogue. His novel stands alone in two ways: First, it provides a passionate backdrop of just how fragile an institution like marriage can be. Secondly, it clearly reveals that there is indeed – a thin line between love and hate.
His second release entitled “Chalk Outline Confessions” is a serial killer non-stop thriller which cleverly details just how far a woman will go in which she has been scorned by her deceased and double-crossing spouse.
His third release entitled “My Life Is A Movie” chronicles a high school senior getting ready to graduate, doing her best to avoid all of the customary and ritualistic pitfalls that often plague that age range. Every parent, care provider andconcerned adult should purchase this for that special young person in their life.
His fourth and most recent release, “Represent” captures the realism of the streets and family values and answers that age old question: when is it alright to turn your back on those that raised you? Two brothers, one living the life of the streets, and the other, a path of academics come to a crossroads when older sibling receives a life sentence for his role in the murder of one of his peers. What does younger brother do? Continue on with his life of positivity? Or seek revenge for his brother on those that set him up in the first place?
David L. has authored several published articles relating to race relations; "How To" articles in becoming a self-published author. David L. is also very active in his community and participates in public speaking engagements with various schools and foster care agencies."
"REPRESENT" a pure bona fide page turner! Let me just say that....
We will enter the world of one of the largest crime lord families, their significant others, family and friends. Based right out of my hometown Brooklyn, NY.
Family loyalty will be tested, gripping betrayal and trust will be defeated to only determine the actual nature of "The Family Business". Mo' Money sure does invite Mo' Problems as the old saying goes and Young Prentice will soon determine his actual nature of trust. Talking about the plot thickens....your thirst for the next page will seriously increase. Guaranteed!!
REPRESENT captivates your mind, body & soul. Again, being a native of Brooklyn, must admit felt like I was right @ home. David L.'s literature is so surreal, able to grasp and captivate every bit of the storyline as if your own.
Mr.David L., you definitely re-introduced New Jack City to the hood with this one! I need Part. 2. I said it once and I will say it again, REPRESENT is definitely A PURE BONAFIDE PAGE TURNER. Salute David L. wish you nothing but success!!!
This book was gifted to me by the author David L. It was a good book! Kind of your typical drug game story but it holds your interest from beginning to end. One thing I noticed was that the vocabulary used in the book lets you know the author is an intelligent guy. That takes away some of the "hoodness" of the story. LoL Looking forward to reading another book by him.
Family first. Blood is thicker than water. Loyalty is at home first is the sayings that they use when trying to express that family comes before anything and everyone, right?
Prentice Barnes is working on getting his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and playing on a semi-pro football team in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn while trying to get recruited to the NFL. If all goes like he plans, there is no time for him to be trying to deal with working in the family trucking business like he is expected to.
Trenton "Innocent" Barnes runs the family trucking business and the business is doing very well. He has taken it over since his father Forrester "Crime" Mitchell retired and he has plans of bringing his younger brother Prentice on to work with him and their sister Tammy. All of that comes to a screeching halt when Innocent is sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole! Did I fail to mention that the trucking company is a front for transporting illegal drugs interstate? Once Innocent is sentenced to prison, he and his father makes it known to Prentice that it is his job to take over the family business and that is what he does. Through the guidance of Crime and Innocent, Prentice is taught some things that he would have never thought that he would had to learn and he has had to give some lessons that he would have never thought that he would have had to give. But your first obligation it to family, right?
Represent grabs you from the prelude and doesn't release you until after the epilogue! The strong storyline flows with such intensity that you find yourself holding your breath at points and talking to the characters at other points. There is so much more that I want to tell you about this story but I don't want to give the book away, this is A MUST BUY! This is my first David L book but it will NOT be my last! Kudos to you David L!
Is family first? Is the saying “blood is thicker than water” really true? Would you be willing to put your dreams to the side to save the family business? These are all questions that the main character, Prentice, is forced to answer in this book. His plans were to get his Bachelor's Degree in psychology and to continue to play on a semi-pro football team until he eventually landed a NFL contract. He had grown up in the drug game and had decided to do better for himself. But the saying goes… “The devil stays busy” and that’s exactly what happens with Prentice. His brother goes to jail and his father is sick so who does that leave to run the “business”? That’s right, Prentice. But that’s all I’m going to tell you as far as plot. I would definitely read another David L book. His characters come alive as if you are watching a scene right in front of you. Your emotions will get caught up with Prentice as he battles what he wants in his life and tries to find answers to the questions at the beginning of my review. If you are looking for an urban novel with suspense, emotion and characters you will love or love to hate. Then you need to one click Represent today.
This was my first book that I've read by David L, he is a very talented writer and I enjoyed "Represent". I must say it took me a while to really get into the story because it didn't fully catch my attention at the very beginning of the book but the more I read the more I started to understand where the author was going with the story. "Represent" displayed true loyalty toward family, when Prentice left school to take over his family business, when his brother, Innocent went to jail and his father became very ill. Prentice's went in blind to something that he was not use to and did what he had to do to keep the family's business up and running. The outcome for Prentice could have been worse than what it was and I was pleased with the way the story ended. Kudos to David L and I look forward to reading more of his books.
Prentis was trying to do the right thing by going to school. His brother Innocent and his father Crime was trying to get him into the family business. Prentis knew the business wasn’t for him but then, his brother Innocent got locked up which kind of force Prentis into the business. To finish out his deals. Prentis girlfriend Angle didn’t agree with Prentis getting in to the business. Prentis got to a point where he didn’t know who he could trust and he was really on his side. His father health wasn’t doing well so he had to make his only decision. This book was well written and had a good story line If you haven’t read this book please 1-click now
ya know...I really really enjoyed this book. I especially enjoyed the fact that my teenaged son was able to read this book and not have mama blushing. this book was clean and crisp, enough of the street life, to be classified as urban but not urban enough and can be classified as African American. pretty nifty!!! I gave this book five stars because it was not only well written but because of the lessons taught in this book. how strong is your family bond? I'll leave it at that! continued success to this author!
