Pleasant revision of Italian grammar, with long dialogue texts for reading in each of the twenty chapters. Thus is vocabulary built. The grammar sections have long strings of text to illustrate each point, each with English translations alongside. Very useful indeed, if only that the translations often are into colloquial English, which is not terribly useful for learning to think in Italian. Otherwise, there are decent appendices with a summary grammar and letter-writing tips, etc. An excellent acquisition for £1 from a corner-shop.

This and the intermediate book are what I used to learn Italian, and this method works if you stay with it. But any language requires practice with others who are fluent.
