October Breezes #2

Summer Sunsets

Rate this book
In October Breezes, Devin Abbott almost lost the one person who mattered most—Skye Williams. Following a rape and an abortion she'd never counted on, she'd believed suicide the only answer, yet Devin saved her, leaving them both struggling to make sense of a future that included Skye and Devin separating for college. Sometimes, however, the past refuses to leave. After college, the two return home to face fears time has only deepened. For Devin, that fear comes in the form of living without Skye, the one woman he’s always loved. Skye yet feels the tremors of her abortion—tremors which have convinced her she’s unlovable. Time and again, she rejects him, leaving them both hurt, but inasmuch as Skye cannot see beyond her choice and Devin cannot shake his fear, neither anticipates how the past will shape them and how much power love yet has.

I loved it!! It was perfect for the end of this history.

It gave the ending Skye deserves and I loved how it was in Devin’s point of view. Great way to see what’s inside his head. Sometimes I screaming to the book cause I was getting annoyed with how Skye was acting.

I totally love Devin and his capacity to love Skye despite all the things she did to push him away.

oook... can anyone please tell me were the guys like Devin are? He is such a cutie!
But, even though, I liked the closure given to the first one and is a happy one indeed does not make any better the leisure of trying to care about Skye...OH MY GOD, woman! Yeah, we know you've been trough enough but come on! Poor Devin pouring his soul out and you just give him a you that is not even a pretty version of yourself? It was so difficult to accept that at the end she was the one and only that would make Devin complete! As much as I didn't want that I liked Devin...so it was OK. Especially because at the end she came to her senses in a way.

Even though there are inconsistencies in both books...Yep, I have brains and I know my stories. I liked the author's style..it's raw, truthful and, well, just real. She didn't decorate reality like most authors, she stick to the world we live in, keep her feet on earth and that is not something I come across with. Maybe because it's the first and hopefully not the last I read in this particular style that it was difficult for me to really like it, at first.
But then when you finish her books everything falls together and actually makes sense.
It was so difficult to see these character grow and mature..We, YA readers, like what we read because it holds the hope and enthusiasm teen years possess. I'm a teen still but I know what it's expected from me, to grow up and leave it all behind and live in the "real world".
I know that when I turn 20 I will have a pre-midlife crisis. It's difficult to let go but I'll have to nonetheless.
The other thing that I liked from both books was that it didn't stick to the "Happily Ever After", it's so common to live it at that teens finally face their feelings and a kiss and confessions and boom! readers just assume they'll live..yep, Happily ever After.
But if you have a realistic within you, you'll know that that it's pretty difficult to accept. It's a good pretending, but real? Not so much.
But with Devin and Skye I know that they will have their Happily Ever After. The author does not have to write it. It's just there if you read very carefully.
Ok, maybe it's enough already and just the time to ask you to try and read this one. It's a good one. I sure had my doubts and wanted to hit my head against the wall when I started but, like I said, when you finish it all makes sense. :)

I'm such a sucker for happy endings! I don't want to give anything away so I'll keep this as spoiler free as possible. This was the sequel to October Breezes and it was told from Devin's point of view. I loved that we got to be inside his head this time and we got to see Skye from a different perspective as well. Devin was such a well written character and he was so protective and loyal to Skye it made me love him that much more. His fierce love and devotion to Skye really made a difference in her life and without his presence and friendship I truly don't think she would've ever healed and moved forward with her life. Even though Devin and Skye went to different colleges they managed to keep their friendship alive and I loved being able to see them come together again.

This book was frustrating at times because it was hard to watch Skye still having so many issues all these years later. I thought in a way she would've healed a bit more from the time that had gone by, but life doesn't always work that way. There were times I found myself getting frustrated with Skye for something she said or did; then I'd look at how I sometimes tend to emotionally block people out and my way of thinking and I completely understood. Thankfully Devin was an amazing friend and he never gave up on Skye. We should all have one person in our lives like Devin who will always be there for us, to bring us back down to earth and to reassure us when needed. This book made me very thankful for that person in my life who I know I'd be lost without!

I loved the ending, don't want to give it away, but I will say that if you liked the first book this one is definitely worth reading. It was a healing process and a very emotional ride we went on with Skye and Devin but the end result was amazing and I'm glad I read this book!!

So I did like this book. I thought it gave Skye the ending she deserves and I loved how it was in Devin's point of view. It definitely put things in a whole new perspective, which may have hurt Skye's character a little.

I found her to be annoying throughout the entire book. It's been 5 years since the first book so one would assume that she had somewhat healed from what happened. Well, time and college did nothing to help her, apparently. She still acted like the same broken teenager from the first book.

I also thought she was very selfish. It seemed like she didn't care about anyone but herself, including Devin at many times. But he was a trooper. He stuck with her the whole time and that was good for her, but I kinda wish he hadn't kept his cool because he just seemed a little too tolerant sometimes.

So, overall I did like the book. Wasn't really what I was hoping, especially regarding Skye's character, but she seemed to come out stronger in the end.

And kudos to DEVIN because he is the most amazing guy ever! (in the fictional world, anyway)

I want to smack Skye over her stupid head! I am really angry and disappointed with Summer Sunsets.

You would think 5 years after the rape, abortion and suicide attempt her she would somehow move on and forget it ever happened-but NOOO,she kept acting weird(till last 3 chapters).

Th only good thing about this book is Devin. He is such a great guy. And he is the only reason Summer Sunsets gets 2 stars rating rather than 1.

My rating for this book is 2.0 stars.

All right! Well, I finished the second book in the October Breezes series and can't say I was disappointed, but that was because I wasn't expecting much. The first book was so good it didn't really require a sequel, and I'm probably being generous with a 3.0 rating. Even though I still loved the story, I felt it took a turn for the worse as characters that I hoped to see grow and develop stayed the same and just ended up looking pathetic. I'm so sorry to say that because I love Skye and Devin!

But I honestly have to ask myself what guy in his right mind would wait for five years and then come back and stay even as his love continually rebuffs him. Maybe in a romance novel, no definitely in a romance novel, but this book was supposed to be realistic, and I felt it lost that when Skye and Devin ended up together after she continually pushed him away. If they had gotten married first off in the book, and she had worried about him leaving, I think that would have been more believable, but instead Skye the stubborn insecure girl turns into a trembling rabbit, and I just didn't see that happening especially with the end of the last book leaving the reader to believe that things would move faster and be better sooner. Instead the reader is left thinking, Devin it's time to move on. I actually at some points wanted him to finally take her advice leave and find someone to love him, then in a third book someone else could come along and pull Skye out of her shell. Devin was a candle amidst black memories, but he was still part of the black memories, and if she couldn't see past that then both of them would have been better off with someone else. Instead we get a harlequin romance without graphic sex. Which, though I hate to say it throws the novel off. The plot leads the reader to expect harlequin but even that is a "disappointment". (I purposely put the quotation like that. I'm making a statement for grammar.) I'm no harlequin fan, but stories have certain expectations, and this one didn't seem to fit the real life model of the last one or the fictional romances so many people write. So for me the plot was overdone and didn't spark very much interest in me.

And once again, I really have to complain about the horrendous grammar. I'm getting very tired of fixing sentences in my head for them to make sense. It's quite discouraging, and I'm beginning to suspect self-publishing, something I'm not a fan of because of the lack of editing. I can't imagine a publishing company would really let a book with that many mistakes slip through its fingers so there is a definite need for her to find someone who can comb her books for mistakes, but she seems incapable of finding them. A story loses it's magic among mistakes.

However, even though the book was a disappointment based on previous expectations, it was a relaxing read. The story wasn't hard to figure out, but it wasn't completely predictable, which allows me to still enjoy the author. That's why I rated it a three because I still liked the idea of the story enough and the characters to keep reading. I rarely put a book down, but that thought never crossed my mind whereas it has in some other cases, so I don't think a 2.0 is fair. I have to at least wonder why I'm reading a book to say I didn't enjoy it. I think what I liked is that even though Devin clings to Skye unrealistically, he's always had that in his character, and reading the book from his point of view out least gave an interesting perspective. Perhaps that's why Skye seemed so whiny because I couldn't see her thoughts. I know the first book set it up for her to have to recover, but I think it was overdone in this book since it was from his point of view. I also liked that this time Devin's family was developed much better and we got to know a different side of him. And overall, though Hooley needs an editor she does write well so that keeps a reader's attention just because she can control the plot even if it doesn't feel realistic.

I look forward to seeing what else Maria Hooley will be writing and already have a few more of her books lined up to read. I hope her fantasy is as good as October Breezes. I think it is time for a break though to move to a different author just so that I can have a fresher perspective for next time. I do recommend reading this series especially since it is inexpensive. I wouldn't buy the paperbacks if there are paperbacks, but the e-books are worth it.

There is a measure of safety in blindness, but you can’t find happiness in safety, no matter how much you want to.

Bellissima.

This series was one of those where I have extremely mixed feelings about. Mainly because I found the books to be pretty much a pity party for Skye and extremely desperate from Devin yet at the same time, somewhat romantic because of the sheer amount of patience that Devin exuded. If it wasn’t for that, I would have given up this book a long time ago.

The first thing that irked me about the book was Skye because she was so oblivious to everything around her and somehow guys would just fall at her feet. She wasn’t even that remarkable or had any redeeming qualities yet right from the beginning, there were clearly three guys vying for her attention. In my head, I was like, okay but other than being “beautiful” (which Skye didn’t even think she was), what was up with her? Nothing. There was pretty much nothing else going about her. The only guy I think make sense in loving her was Devin because they grew up together but for the other two guys, I’m like both of you pretty much spoke 5 words to her and suddenly, you’re both into her like no other. That sort of mentality is something I just don’t get. The author didn’t make Skye out to be this wonderful person either because she was also incredibly awkward, not at all confident and overall just shy. Not to mention, she had major trust issues and would actually push people away with her shitty attitude (i.e. Warren). But again, somehow the guys were just into her. And in the second book where she was still recovering from her past trauma (which totally makes sense) but there’s just so much push and pull going on with her and her inability to have any sort of self-confidence. All I kept reading was “but I’m not good enough”. And I honestly can’t stand characters like that.

As for Devin, Skye’s best friend since forever, was someone who I felt verged on the line between desperate and romantic – I honestly still can’t decide which. In a way, the whole situation in high school was his fault because he left her to deal with her own problems so I can see why he is trying to make up for it now. However, at the same time, his inability to move on was a little annoying as well because literally he only thought about Skye and what she wanted. And he couldn’t take no for answer. There were so many times when Skye was like “no, I’m not good enough” or “no, I can’t deal with this” or whatever, he was like nope, you’re stuck with me. I mean, it’s sweet to see how much he loves her but I feel like there comes a time when you need to realize that the best way to show your love is to give her up because it’s what she either wants or what’s best for her. I don’t think he really understood that. Thankfully, the ending was a happy one but it could’ve easily been a sad one so it was really a luck of the draw.

Finishing these books took a lot of willpower because Skye was just so frustratingly annoying – I can’t stand weak characters with the whole plot as a pity party for said character. I don’t mind weak characters as much if the plot itself was amazing but this wasn’t the case. As stated, I only finished this series because I thought that Devin was somewhat romantic and that both books were quick reads. Honestly I wouldn’t recommend these at all unless you are interested in wallowing through a plot full of grief-ridden people and weak characters.

it was such a pretty book considering it being from Devin's point of view this time :)

Summer Sunsets by Maria Rachel Hooley is the sequel to October Breeze and is set 5 years after the events that happened in the first book .
Skye and Devin had parted ways to go to college and now they're back to the same old town where they faced things which literally rocked their world upside down .

Skye has still not been able to cope up with the past . the rape and Abortion had smashed her soul and things have become so bad that she's build up such an emotional barrier around herself that it's almost impossible to penetrate into it !

there's only one guy who was and is the sole person who can do that , and that's non-other than our lover boy Devin . :D

what i loved about this book ->

1. Devin's love for Skye is just the U.L.T.I.M.A.T.E thing !
the way the guy cares about Skye , wants to protect her and wants to take all her problems away and just wants make her happy...is so heart-warming . ( reading about this guy almost makes me say that , dang ! this guy shouldn't have been fictional ! )

2.Devin .

3. more of Devin .

4.and in the end , just Devin .

what i didn't like about this book and why it just gets a three star rating from me ?

one word..

SKYE.

sure she's been through a lot and the effects of Abortion and Rape can't just heal that easily but that doesn't mean she needs to be so damn annoying and selfish !
okay i get it , the girl was a kid when all that happened ! but i think 5 years is enough for the dumb chick to understand Devin's love for her ! okay i know that it's a part of her to be insecure and she has full on rights for that but c'mon you were so damn frustrating i can't even start ...

and other than that what i loved was , that however annoying and stupid Skye was , Devin never gave up on her ! now that's complete macho for me :D
one thing which kept on pinching was his constant babble of ...'hey you ! ' ugh.

other than i felt , that this book would've been a bit better if we had Skye's POV in it as well . Somehow , Skye's character is a bit stronger and to know what was going on in her head would've been better :)

anyhow , Summer Sunsets was a nice emotional read and i completely loved it :)

October Breezes was the BOMB (Pun intended). Summer Sunsets is the AFTERMATH.

Summer Sunets, the sequel to October Breezes by Maria Rachel Hooley, continues the story of Skye Williams and Devin Abbott. This story, told in Devin’s perspective, picks up years later after Skye and Devin have graduated from separate colleges.

In October Breezes Skye battles through many life-altering obstacles, almost losing herself in the process. It was an emotional and heartbreaking suspense novel. Then in Summer Sunsets, Skye is still struggling to accept her past and move forward with her life. Summer Sunsets is more of a romance, focusing on finding yourself after the storm.

Summer Sunsets is a good story, but it isn’t as good as October Breezes. Still, I am very glad Hooley continued on with this story. Summer Sunsets illustrates the long-term effects of the tragedies Skye has faced. This novel also gives us closure by showing us what’s to become of Skye and Devin.

I gave Summer Sunsets 3 STARS. I thought it was a commendable book and I recommend it to anyone who has read the first story in this two-book series, October Breezes. And if you haven’t read October Breezes then I strongly recommend that you do so.

This book was only slightly better than the first book.

It's set about 7 years after Skye was raped, had an abortion and then attempted suicide.

I definitely preferred Devin's POV to Skye's.

But, that said, Skye is still too self involved for my liking. She's still so defensive that she is unlikable. Never once does is occur to her to address the stress Devin faced after he found her following her suicide attempt.

The focus is still all about protecting Skye and that's not realistic. Despite the trauma she'd suffered years and years ago, the world goes on and there are other people to think of! Yes, there would be residual feelings, paranoia, fear, sadness and loss. That's understandable. But, Skye let it define her life and everyone around her allowed it.

I was sick to death of everyone treating Skye like she was the center of the universe when she never had to earn it or show some empathy/compassion for what everyone else had gone through following her poor choices.

Summer sunsets is told five years after October Breezes and is told in Devin's P.O.V which I loved as hearing a story told my a boy was a nice change from what i normaly read.

Devin and Skye are still trying to come to terms with all that happened five years ago and how they have both changed. Devin is still totaly in love with Skye even tho she dosen't think she deserve's his love because of the choices she made in Octomber Breezes I loved how he still waited for Skye to love him even tho she keeps on trying too push him away.

This book still holds upset and heart break for skye but also one of the best endings to a book i have ever read it made me so happy and gave me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Summer Sunsets was an amazing follow up book and I look forward to reading more YA written by Maria Rachel Hooley.

So, I'm not entirely sure how I felt about this one. It definitely had a bit of the same preachy feel the first book did. And while I did like finding out how things worked out for Devin and Skye, I kind of felt like this book wasn't completely necessary either. It felt like even though there was a lot that happened, nothing actually really happened (does that make sense?).

This book was not as good as the first one. Don't get me wrong, I still sat down and devoured it and pretty much loved every single second of it. However, there were some things that bothered me about it that just made it not quite as good as the first one. I really enjoyed that it was told from Devin's perspective rather than Skye's.

The few issues (and they are really minor) were that some of the book seemed not realistic. There were some phrases that Devin said that in today's world, a 23 or 24 year old would just not say. It kind of got on my nerves when it was written more like an english essay than what a real early 20's guy would say.

There was also a scene between Devin and Tyler that while part of it is realistic, the follow-up to the scene is not. It is not real at all and it bothered me.

wow. i couldn't put this book down. even those the grammatical errors got me again but besides that it was great reading a book in a guys POV. great way to see what's inside his head. sometimes i was just screaming to the book cause i was getting annoyed with how Skye was acting like everyone is out to get her while all Devin wanted to do is love her and spend his life with her. i really wished the whole time they were in high school he professed his love to her.. and i kind of wanted Kellin to be more in this book because i wanted to see Kellin and Skye see each other and see how that reacts. kinda upset they didnt bring back jimmy he was a hero in the first. all of all a must read it took me 2 and a half days to read both right into one another. i had to buy this when i found out it existed :D enjoy!

I really enjoyed this book and it was the perfect ending for Skye and Devin.

I love how Devin relentlessly pursues Skye to make her understand his love for her. He won't give up and I love that's he's always trying and is always there for her when she pushed him away time and time again.

In this final book of the series, we can really see how Skye is trying to work through all of her problems but is terrified to act on her feelings for Devin as she feels like she's damaged goods and she doesn't deserve him. In this book we really see how her rape has really affected her and how it has lead her to feel unworthy of Devin's love.

Devin finally manages to get through to Skye and I love how they manage to have a beautiful life with a wonderful daughter and how they are both finally happy after years of heartbreak. A perfect happy ending for Skye and Devin.

Okayy.. there's pretty much lots of reasons why i didn't exceptionally love this book. I was so excited to read it. But all seem to do to me is resent Skye. Its like she didn't really give much on the book. It was all Devin. I know is from Devin's pov but hello? i little bit from Skye wouldn't hurt. It was all about how Devin knows everything about Skye. Its like before Skye breathes, Devin knows it already.. at first it was okay because he kinda sounded sweet, but no way in hell did i expect that until the end of the book, its gonna be like that. Don't get me wrong, i like their relationship.. bestfriends turned lovers.. i just didn't like the fact that Its as if Devin was alone in fighting for the two of them. Anyway... rant finished. i gave it a 3.

I loved this book!!!! it was perfect for the end of this history, i cried with them, they overcame all the problems, Devin is a really good guy, his love is loyal and impossible to find in our present, the most interesting of the book is that is from Devin´s perspective, he tells us his part of the history. All the book is really touching, Skye is a really hurted person and she thinks that don't deserves be happy, but Devin it's always there for her, he is the only one that can save her from her wrong emotions.
It´s a beutiful history, were we can know all the ugly things that can change one life and how one person can be the saver of this life, is a difficult history but the love always can save lifes.

Read it!! you are gonna love it, like i do!

I was so excited when I reached the end of October Breezes and saw that it had a sequel. I think this book would have done better alternating Devin and Skye's perspectives because Skye is a much more complex character than Devin is and it was a little limiting not knowing what was going on in her head. It was also frustrating because she'd do something and there wouldn't be that incite into her head we had in the first book. In the first book I was dying for a look into Devin's head because I couldn't figure out why he would repeatedly put up with her problems so easily and now I know. I read both books almost nonstop over the last two days.

refreshing book! 5 stars!!

i really loved the struggles devin had to encounter before skye destroys her wall completely.. well not actually destroy.. you get the point. ;) in the end, this book would be highly recommended for coming of age and other teenagers who have , might have, already have experienced this kind of encounter. either way, i salute all of you out there. :)

as for ma'am hooley, her exceptional skills in expressing a POV of a person who has clearly been through a lot in the first book really captured my interest. and to think it all ends up to this, .. couldn't have asked for a better ending. :)

I was impressed at how well Maria captured the male perspective. I know not all males would make the decisions or behave as Devin was portrayed, but I know there were many times while reading this book that I reflected on my youth. I could identify with Devin's desperation and frustration. There were times that I wanted to reach into the book and smack him in the head, and there were times where I wanted to smack Skye as well. Decisions made in emotional times are seldom the best, and I think that was acurately portrayed by Ms. Hooley. Great sequel to a fantastic novel. Well done, Maria!

A nice conclusion to the previous book. I enjoyed that this one is told from Devin's point of view and I love the flashbacks to the previous book from his POV.

I felt the characters were better developed in this story, more believable than the prior. The only issue I had is sometimes they did not talk like "young adults" which can be something an adult author can struggle with when writing younger characters. It wasn't often or totally off putting, but I definitely stopped on occasion and thought "kids in their 20s would NEVER say that".

*sigh*

Me gusto mucho.

Necesito urgente. lol
