We perceive time differently according to our state of being. The analogy of the incomprehensibility of a higher physical dimension to a lower physical dimension (Abbot's "Flatland" novel) suggests a model for dimensions to time and the same relationship between them. The question is - how to access "higher" dimensions of time? The book explores answers and practices relevant to this question.
I liked the book. I think Thomas put a lot of thought, time, effort, research, etc. into the fascinating, ever illusive mystery of time. Not really original, but a comprehensive study of how time has been described by many cultures: scholars, scientists, Holy Men, Shaman. writers and poets. How can this not be interesting to anyone who has ever wondered about what exactly IS time?
In my opinion (as a writer) the book was well written. . .managed an unwieldy topic with some skill. I give it five stars and recommend it. Tom Brashares
Bruce Thomas used to play bass with Elvis Costello and the Attractions in their prime, and he was good. Listen to "Chelsea" or "The Beat" for example. In fact "This Year's Model" is a long-term favourite record of mine. I saw him touring their next album, "Armed Forces", and s few years later, probably "Goodby Cruel World". They were a great band live even when the records were not so good. I happened to gather that he'd written asemi-fictionalised account of his time with that group, called "The Big Wheel", so I read that. It was pretty well written and a little philosophical (in any sense you like) in parts. Then I saw he'd written this book, which seems to aspire to summarise a few thousand years' worth of science, philosophy and esoteric "wisdom" in little more than a hundred pages. In all sincerity I think it is one of the least bullshitty attempts to do that kind of thing that I've seen. With the caveat that I found it impossibly dense and somewhat lacking in forward movement. I read a few chapters diligently, then started skimming faster and faster. So I'm utterly unqualified to give a review of this book because to do it justice you would have to read it as slowly as necessary to weigh up each sentence. I'm not sure I have enough time left on the planet to do that, but I respect Bruce's sincerity, intelligence and music enough to give him four stars. If any reader should choose to invest in a copy purely on the strength of my four stars but without reading these comments (I'm confident it's unlikely), so be it; it's just karmic payback for her hastiness.
