Another rather dated book on the subject, especially the obligatory chapter on environmentalism and conservation, the terms not having yet become mainstream at the time of publication in the 1960s. Although dire predictions of calamity due to overcrowding and pollution generally did not materialize, in a way many parts of the world today are already seriously damaged. The developed nations having since outsourced pollution to poorer parts while themselves seeing an improvement in local conditions.
The coverage of habitats was cursory, with more detailed written discussions of adaptations, population biology and community structure. For a large format book I felt it was too wordy, and wished there were more illustrations, some of which were quite beautiful in depicting lush landscapes.
