This book (subtitled A Victorian Childhood Remembered) is geared to a limited audience. Like the author, I was raised in Esquimalt, British Columbia on Vancouver Island and we took annual holidays at Shawnigan Lake at grandmother's summer cabin. The book brought back many childhood memories of both places as I recognized all the geographic locations and some of the peoples names (including my grandfather who owned the local meat market that the author's family patronized) and many overlaps of things we did within the 2 communities.
I moved off the island at 19, but return to many of those childhood places on my many trips back. To quote the author "...our childhood was magical--wonderfully free --and Esquimalt was the perfect place to grow up."
