I decided to read this book since three cities, I know, were here taken as location of the roman: Cologne, where I actually work and the place where the roman starts and from where the protagonists are coming from, Venice where I worked and where the protagonist spent a part of his life and Antwerpen, which I visited recently and impressed me with its masterpieces. The roman takes place during the XIV century, period of the Protestant Reformation. At the same time, rebellions were rised in the German cities in order to improve the people life conditions. Obviously during these periods, somebeody can occur in mistakes or simply in high trustness of others, which can bring him in danger and force him to leave his own city. In effect, it was happened to Tielman, the father of Leohnart (the protagonist), who has to leave Cologne to avoid to be imprisoned. In effect, Tielman history is particular and after his death, Leonhart has to discover what happened behind his father death. At the end, everything seems to be clear but another surprise is prepared by Noel Gerard, author of this roman. Reading this roman, what I particulary liked was to discover places in Cologne that I have still to visit and I had the chance to find out as well aspects of the Protestan Reformation which were me unknown. The benefits to read an historical roman.
