I love the movie "The Long Gray Line," and looked for this book (on which the movie was based) for years. What a disappointment! Basically, Maher liked drinking, fighting, and football. His coauthor strings together some fairly pointless anecdotes that somehow attracted Hollywood's attention. Skip the book; watch the movie.
