Robert Cowley is an American military historian, who writes on topics in American and European military history ranging from the Civil War through World War II. He has held several senior positions in book and magazine publishing and is the founding editor of the award-winning MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History; Cowley has also written extensively and edited three collections of essays in counterfactual history known as What If?
As part of his research he has traveled the entire length of the Western Front, from the North Sea to the Swiss Border.
Gamble for victory was the complete story ot the greatest offensive of world war 1, from planing, to during, and after the attack. This book isnt a story of one person in the battle, it is a documentary.
This book was about how general Ludendorff of germany (the mastermind behind the attack) created the offensive, and carried it out. Then how general Foch (commander of the allied forces)defended his thirty miles of trenches from the invaders, even though he was massively outnumbered, suffering an extreme amount of casualties, and had no back up for two days.
I could easily reccomend this book to anybody who is into furthering their knowledge about war and strategy. I personely loved the book because it had an extensive amount of detail and research into it. The only reason that I gave it three stars was that it was hard to follow with all the names, places, and divisions in the attack.
