I thought this book would be more of a page turner than it turned out to be. Not complaining. It told of the scouts. They had a big part in leading people West form East safely. There are famous names like Wild Bill Hickock and Buffalo Bill Cody in the text. The back half of the book tells mostly of scouts role dealing with natives. They learned to communicate with them, they learned how to do a lot of their trade from them, and thus learned how to track them, and they were instrumental in the conflicts against them. Cody and Hickock were show people for at least part of their lives. The exploits of the scouts were pretty wild and wooly with all the fighting and negotiating with Natives. Their personalities were very independent and they went where they wanted to go, and did what they wanted to do. It would be interesting for anyone who enjoys old west history.
The Scouts is a book from The Old West Series by Time-Life.
The illustrations were beautiful. My favorite ones were paintings by Charles M. Russell. He did an amazing job capturing real-life scenes from people’s lives. There were black & white photos of the scouts. They were not only tough-looking but mean as heck. The cover was made from tooled leather. The book was made to look and feel like a horse’s saddle.
