In "Walk Yourself Well", registered physical therapist Sherry Brourman teaches readers how to permanently free themselves from structural pain by targeting its cause. Learning to walk correctly by using the body's natural motions is the key to restoring proper alignment and allowing the body to heal and remove pain by itself.
I found this book years ago when I was in a difficult physical state thanks to my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I learned a lot by reading it, and learned how to pay closer attention to the way I walk, as well as learning some exercises that helped my body be ready to walk properly.
I am planning to re-visit these pages over the next weeks, because after nearly a year from the time I moved back to AZ from Mexico, I have not quite recovered from the physical work and the stress of the move. My body still wants to go on strike too often and I need to help it get over this little hump. I refuse to believe that my current state of being will be permanent, and I want to review the exercises and tips here with the hope that they will do the same for me now as they did back in the days when I would be walking straight down a street but feel like I was aiming to the left. I was a mess! lol
I'm marking this as read today, but I will be dipping into it a lot over the next few weeks. I'm excited about that and looking forward to helping my body behave itself again.
The author, a physical therapist to “the stars” in Los Angeles, lost credibility with me immediately by posing in 3-inch-high heels on the back cover of this book, which is supposedly all about healthy walking. There are some good corrective gait exercises in here, but she says absolutely nothing about the shoes you wear, which seems insane for a book that is intended to help people walk well. And some of her advice is certainly questionable from a biomechanics perspective (e.g., she recommends sucking your stomach in, all the time). Read Whole Body Barefoot by Katy Bowman instead.
Stand tall, shoulder back and down etc is the standard advice on walking correctly. The problem with it is that when you are spending most of your time sitting at a desk, you develop weakness in your muscles and when you think you are standing tall, you are actually leaning back and sitting on your hips. And then when you walk with that posture you create a lot of pain in your joints and back and all over.
Even though I read her book several years ago, I never really thought much about it then. Probably because of articles like this: https://www.vogue.com/article/gait-tr... I came around to it only after I developed a lot of pain in my legs and joints and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. I went back to her book and I followed her suggestions and slowly I started feeling better when I walked. I thought her advice is priceless. It is not very easy to get her flow but practicing some of her methods and rereading it will not only improve your walk, it will also strengthen your muscles as you move.
this book has changed my life forever. i have been searching for "the answer" and believe i have finally found it. we're all in terrible pain because no one is walking "correctly". we all just "learn how to walk" when we're babies and that's all anyone ever says about it. this book lays it all out and makes it easy to correct your current bad walking habits. i bought 10 copies and started handing it out to loved ones. i hope it spreads far and wide.
This book came highly recommended to me by my yoga teacher she is also a physical therapist. Wow so much info. I had gotten this book from my local library but not even halfway through the book I had to own it and now I do. If you like to walk which we all should do this is a must read.
Difficult reading but powerful in application! I'm pretty sure applying these principles is the only way I'm going to overcome my injuries and get walking again! I've also found the ideas applicable spiritually! Pain and difficulty progressing is often caused because though we're headed in the right direction we're not walking correctly!
Great read.. I have only recently stop hunching my back and standing up straight. To my surprise I didn't know how straight I needed to stand and where to place my shoulders. After reading this book I realise that my whole walking had been effected. It gave me the knowledge I needed to stand up straight properly. Excercise included...
This goes into great detail about walking, but if you have the patience, it can reward you with a important knowledge about your body and all the many muscles that we take for granted. I got ithe book because I walk a lot and have begun to feel pain in my knees. So far it has reduced my pain and I look forward to learning more
