Voices of Rape Janet Bode 1999, 160pages, $9.95 Topic: Social Issues - Violence ISBN 0531159329
This book was explosive biopic of rape and the different experiences from a rape survivor, police officer, psychologist, and more. When you view their stories you are able to relate more to the person. When you read the rape victims story it will bring you tears from her heartfelt story of date rape. I recommend this book to anyone and children in grades 6th - 12th. I believe it gives students guidelines on what to do and what not to do the may enter into similar situations. This book did a great job of not glamorizing the perpetrator and giving the spotlight to the victims. I would use this book in my class to show the children another way to look at good and evil without it being magical and more humanized.
The book I read was Voices Of Rape by Janet Bode. This book was a non fiction book and the theme of the book was mainly to talk to someone if you have been a victim of rape and don’t let rape change who you are. Voices Of Rape is mainly about rape victims and their stories and what to do if you are raped. Also the book tells you how you can get help and it sort of gives and idea about what the process is as a rape victim deals with the police and what happens in the emergency room . There are short stories about boys who think that they didn’t rape a girl just because she was promiscuous and girls who go to the police after someone rapes them or tries to rape them. The book also tells you how to defend yourself. At first I thought the book was going a bit overboard when they where telling stories about girls being raped because that’s their personal business but I now think it helps young girls understand that you cant trust ever person you meet and to watch your back. There was one girl named Chicken was a bit sluttish and boys seemed to take advantage of her because they thought she was easy but one day a boy named Kevin thought he could get away with raping Chicken and when the police arrested him he thought that Chicken didn’t mind being forced into sex with him. In the end of the story I learned that just because a girl wants to be intimate with him doesn’t mean you have to just so he would like you. There was also a story about a high school student who was forced into rape with a knife . She let him rape her because he had a knife and she kept quiet about it because she was tired and didn’t want to get involved with the police. I learned a lot about rape victims and how to protect myself from a rapist because sometimes people are blind to the fact that they could be raped by the same sex. I would recommend this book to teenage girls or rape victims because the book gives a lot of info on rape and many stories in the book could help someone who has been raped or worried about being raped. I haven’t really read any other books similar to this book because I don’t like books that talk about people getting abused or hurt but I think this book gave a lot of info if someone was interested in rape. Overall I think this book gives a lot of info and is very helpful on the topic of rape. Many people gave their stories and I have taken some useful info from their personal stories. I liked the book because the author didn’t beat around the bush and she basically said tell someone if you are hurt by someone else. Also Voices of rape could help someone who is raped talk about their situation because the author takes letters from anyone who needs to talk.
