'Tough Enough' was a very entertaining retelling of three Pokemon episodes condensed and tied together into one single narrative. I found it clear and concise despite a few errors that would drive some fans a little Zubatty.
In the first part of the narrative we encounter Muramasa, a man who spends his time teaching younger trainers to better themselves and their Pokemon. Through him we meet Shingo, a boy who relies too much on data to figure out battles and as a result does not engage like a proper trainer until Ash persists and defeats his Scizzor "Blade" with Heracross. Ash demonstrates that you cannot rely on data as instinct and trust are necessary components of being a trainer.
In the second part we meet another powerful Johto region Pokemon: Houndour. Ash, Brock, and Misty encounter a small pack of Houndour who have been stealing things from humans in an effort to help one of their own recover from being sick. When confronted they attack but quickly leave when their sick packmate is in danger at the claws of a Golem. Ash and friends help defeat the Golem and then ensure the houndour gets the needed attention at a Pokemon Center.
In the final part of the book we meet Noctowl, a very intelligent owl Pokemon that gets amusement by outwitting humans who try to catch it. Ash has a competition with Dr. Wiseman to see whether a trainer or scientist can catch the odd-colored Noctowl first. After an interruption from Team Rocket where Ash saves the wild Noctowl, it challenges the young trainer and is soundly defeated by Pikachu and joins the roster.
The underlying them that ties the three segments together is the 'strength of the Johto Region Pokemon' and Ash decided the region is perfect for him as a 'tough trainer'.
This is a great beginner book for readers who are ready to go past Dr.Seuss but not yet ready for William Joyce or more difficult author works. As a Pokemon fan, I enjoyed it immensely.
