Although approximately a decade and a half out of date, this historically-informed work remains relevant to the future today (January 2014). Gets both the politics and the economics right, while eschewing shibboleths, and remaining relentlessly optimistic: refreshing and necessary.

A great standpoint. But cities are doomed, like the rest of us. Just sayin. Read it, though.
