Juggling being a single parent and a running a small private investigation business, ex-soldier Dean Monroe, finds his life suddenly under the microscope by the social services. After growing pressure from the organisation, he loses custody of his son and finds himself in a battle to get him back. A veteran of two wars, he finds himself fighting the biggest battle of his life. As a reprieve from the stress, he takes on an unusual case, to help an old friend. His client’s plight is close to his own heart, but he soon learns things about this beautiful young woman that causes him to question his motive for helping her. Going against his better judgement and other people’s harsh warnings, he flies to the Persian Gulf with this woman. He soon realises that maybe he should have listened to the advice and his inner voice. He unwittingly embarks on the greatest adventure of his life, which could potentially lead to the biggest discovery in finding the Biblical Garden of Eden. But with adventure comes danger, and soon Monroe finds himself not just in a fight to get his son back, but a fight to stay alive when a deadly organisation surfaces and targets him and his companions with a show of force he has never encountered before.
I was looking forward to reading this third instalment of the Dean Monroe PI series (after enjyoing the first two), & it certainly didn't disappoint!
As before, there's mix of Dean's complicated family life which needs fixing - with his ongoing drama with social services and access to his young son - all alongside a new case for him that takes him across the world, plunging him into deceit and danger from all sides.
This culminates in a quest to discover the location of the biblical Garden of Eden - but does it really exist, and could anyone really find it? Monroe is all set to find out - and it could be his most dangerous mission yet.
Once again Thomas Caldwell has crafted a gripping and gritty story, full of twists and turns and danger, and a whole rogues' gallery of characters for Monroe to face up to. The mixture of action and intrigue, coupled with Monroe's fragile personal life and sometimes self-destructive behaviour, makes for a very compelling read as he really gets put through the mill here.
Definitely worth a read if you're a fan of gritty crime fiction, with a touch of Mission Impossible-style mayhem!
