Manu is a tired old soul, weary of his practice and often in confusion. His visions bring forth great experiences of his past and future lives. And finally, after a consultation with his guru, he is lead to his ultimate goal.
Through travels, reflections, and battles, a Buddhist monk ends up finding complete love in Nicholas K F Matte's crisp and thoughtful novel, "The Slumbering Monk."
As the monk who always contemplates outside nature, Manu experiences its beauty and danger. In the midday sun under the Nimba tree, he started his ritual until twenty predators broke the silence. There was a relentless battle between the beasts until the two remaining attackers retreated. On another meditation time in the jungle, enchanting sights entertained him when hundreds of dazzling wasps joined him, which pleased his eyes. Manu travels to different places, including Lucknow, where the beautiful Jama Masjid building is located that always fascinates him with its holy paths and many devotees. Fast-forward: he meets his longtime teacher, Master Samyac Ulukah, where he shares his incredible dream visions, to which the master gives profound interpretation about the dream's connection to life and love.
Fluid and readable, the book is more absorbing with its vibrant illustrations, as with Divya, the glorious woman who stole Manu's heart. The exciting pace is fed by intense and thrilling battles, especially between Manu and Mara the Destroyer, where bloodshed is grim and vivid.
Matte enlivened each chapter with different allure as he shifted the plot seamlessly from the main story to its subplot, presenting Yui, Hinata, Haruto, and the rest of the engaging characters, which adds richness to the story.
The prose is changing from reflective to intense scenarios, where Manu fights with the beasts and demons. Its format is centralized and that appears like written poetry. The narrative is sometimes punctuated with Japanese language, and Matte seemed inspired by local names, which is palpable in his settings and characters.
Complex and captivating, "The Slumbering Monk" is a concise novel that lovers of literary fiction will enjoy. Delighted, I became a fan of Matte's books!
