Two extraordinary women - They share a birthday, a destiny, and a powerful man who can destroy them both.
Women, like money, were part of the Lancaster legacy. And Haydon Lancaster was heir to the throne, a man bred for the White House, born to succeed. To Laura, brilliant designer and photographer, he was forbidden pleasure, consuming passion, secret shame. But only her prophetic camera would capture the devastating truth - the soul of a man haunted by a love he could not reveal. To titian-haired, emerald-eyed Tess, who blazed a trail of sexual conquest and violence up to the pinnacle of power in New York and Washington, Hal Lancaster was the ultimate challenge, worthy of a world-class adventuress whose seductive brilliance no man could resist. She wanted a wedding ring and nothing would stop her...until a picture from the past unleashed the demons of obsession and revenge...
Wow! This was such an intense and engrossing read, so much that I just couldn't put it down and eagerly read it as fast as I could. Especially right off the bat in the first chapter you are shown a glimpse of something happening but are left wondering what led to this moment!
Haydon, Elizabeth and Laura. What a trio, there are few leads who are so charismatic and interesting, whether on their own or together. Hal, the handsome and charming stud, who cannot be free with his love. Elizabeth who knows what she wants and is very calculating. Laura who is so innocent but headstrong and independent. What happens when the 2 leading females meet Hal and fall so deeply in love with him? Well.... a lot can happen over the span of a few short decades.
The climax and ending. Wow. So intense and heartbreaking.
This was definitely a very good read. Engrossing, thrilling and teasing. It was not too over the top like soap operas are, but it is definitely interesting to capture and keep your attention throughout.
Read this about 7 years ago. Still remains one of my favourite books of all time. Strong message of how each day we face posibilities to shape our own lives. What amazes me until today is how I absolutely forgot that ending is already told at the start of the book. Very strong female characters that are so special in their differences that actually sometimes are similarities. Would suggest reading on weekend - once you get into storyline it will be hard to put it down. Ps. It's two books.
It is one of those certain types of novels where internal thoughts of the characters are described in detail, if you like that sort of thing (it works for me sometimes) give this a chance, but fair warning, it is looooonnnnngggg.
I'd give more stars if I could. This book is so haunting and complex, it's almost too much. Felt like I had to decompress after reading it at times. Definitely recommend.
a playboy who professes to love one woman but refuses to stay faithful to her or marry her? doesn't check up on her? not concerned bout not using birth control? not romantic IMO.
