Recipes with Romance #1

The Bride Wore Chocolate

Rate this book
Candace Woodrow knows it's a recipe for disaster. She has no business even looking at another man--no matter how sinfully sexy he is--much less waking up in Michael Vogler's bed three weeks before she marries Mr. Right. She's determined the wedding will go off without a hitch--as long as she can keep her meddling grandmother, her flighty mother, and her well-meaning friends from interfering with her plans--and pointing out her doubts every time she turns around. And it won't be easy--since Michael's just become Candace's biggest client, with an order for thousands of the Gift Baskets to Die For she creates with her friends. Worse, he wants to work closely with Candace...every step of the way. It's enough to drive a girl to intravenous chocolate consumption, 24/7. And the way Candace's heart flip-flops whenever Michael is around is an industrial-sized clue that keeping a tight rein on her future and her heart might not be such a good idea. But risking it all for a man she barely knows is even crazier, right?

At first glance, THE BRIDE WORE CHOCOLATE is another "bride-to-be falls for her one true love-and it's not the groom" story. If you come to that conclusion from reading the back blurb of the book, you'd be correct. But-and it's a huge but-this story is that and so much more. And it's the so much more that makes this book well worth reading.

Candace Woodrow is a lot of things. Restless, a little nervous about getting married to the man who is definitely Mr. Right, surrounded by in-laws that make the Osbourne's look like a tame addition to the local petting zoo. Most of all, she's living her dream by owning and running her own business, Gift Baskets to Die For.

"Candy" Woodrow, however, is having one heck of a time resisting Michael Vogler-and the sinfully delicious creations that she makes for her business. Her chocolate cravings are out of control, and it's enough to drive a girl to distraction. Not to mention that Michael looks better than a Godiva-dipped strawberry, and Candy is definitely in over her head.

What makes this book so great is a mixture of wonderful writing, witty dialogue, family members that will leave you exasperated and laughing out loud-and the best chocolate recipes that I've ever had the fortune to stumble across. Yes, recipes. Each chapter is prefaced by a chocolate confection with oh-so-punny names such as "Rebecca's Chuck-the-Guilt Chocolate Chip Cookies" and "Maria's Something's-Up Frozen Chocolate-Covered Bananas."

The recipes alone are enough to make this book a keeper. The story of a bride who is engaged to be married for all the wrong reasons is an added benefit. The arrival of the man who throws Candy's life into a tailspin is a definite plus. And when it all comes together-to bring to life the story of love, passion, and chocolate-what you end up with is a humorous story of the heart.

All in all, for those readers with a gigantic sweet tooth, THE BRIDE WORE CHOCOLATE is a sweet, indulgent love story to cure your cravings.

This is an adorable romcom. Our heroine is due to marry the man who fits all her criteria. Then she meets a man who doesn't fit any of them, but makes her little chocolate heart melt.
A funny story with great side characters and some awesome chocolate recipes! I tried one and it was great!

This was a sweet story about a woman named Candace who was determined to marry someone safe (Barry) instead of taking a risk/chance in her life. Then she gets drunk and meets Michael and her life turns upside down. She tries to fight her attraction to him but slowly the relationship between them develops until Candy has to choose who she wants to be and what life she wants to live. I don't usually read books that are purely romance stories but this was a good story and I did enjoy it.

I'm a sucker for a good romance, and Shirley Jump's The Bride Wore Chocolate certainly didn't disappoint! Not to mention that I adore books that include recipes. I think it's such a selling point for a story to include the food or drinks (or song lists, too) that the characters enjoy, mention, or talk about. It's like a little extra bonus to the story and that special touch never fails to win points with me. Another selling point for this story with me is that it is set in Boston. I have fond memories of visiting Boston and would love to return and visit again. The Bride Wore Chocolate took me on a little return vacation each time I opened to where I had left off.

Perhaps I watch far too many Lifetime movies, but I found the plot to be rather predictable. Poor Barry never really had a chance with readers. We first meet him through the eyes and opinions of Candace's friends and family members and, but the time he enters the page - horrible mother in tow - our hearts and minds are already set against him and in favor of the hunky, mysterious Michael. Tough break, Barry.

For me, there was never really a question if Candace would choose Barry or Michael. Candace's friends were tugging her back up the aisle she was getting ready to walk down and it seemed pretty darn crystal clear to me that she was doubtful from page one. That said, Shirley Jump has an engaging writing style that lures the reader back to her pages - and frequently. It's a tough book to put down! Her character canvas is filled with funny and endearing faces; I especially like the relationship between Candace and her two best friends and business partners - strong relationships and friendships between women are always a hit with me! Candace's mother is a hoot and her grandmother made me laugh in every one of her scenes. And, as an animal lover, I also appreciated the various dogs and cats that made an appearance, as well.

All in all, this was a fast, light, and funny read. If I were a beach-going kind of girl, I'd say this is perfect for a beach read. As it is, I found it to be a wonderful palate cleanser; a fun break from my usual reading fare of cozy mysteries and contemporary literary fiction. My sincere thanks for the opportunity to take part in the book tour and offer this review in exchange for a copy of the book!

Love that this book comes with recipes, chocolate ones. A recipe at the start of each chapter and there are 26 of them! That is what first attracted me to wanting to read this book. weddings and chocolate.
Love that 3 women in business is doing so well, what an idea!
All kinds of things are going wrong with the wedding preparations: the wedding cake, the DJ and Candace Woodrow is getting spooked about it all.is to marry Barry but her dress at the shop burnt down. One night she and her 2 girlfriends search all over Boston for the new wedding dress, stop for dinner and a drink and she wakes up in a man's apartment that she doesn't even know.
With her hangover her mother drops by and will stay till the wedding to help her as her latest marriage of 7 days has gone sour.
Her grandmother acts like she's in her 20's and shocks Candace at times.
Her other friends Rebecca and Maria share what's going on in their lives as well.
Michael Volger is the client that is interested in their gift baskets from somebody at work having received one. He also happens to be the man Candance had the one night stand with.
With his plan of a business deal along with their business it's sure to be a win for all.
Love hearing about all the rewarding charity work, priceless!
The sexual innuendo's are so funny, especially coming from the older female adults.
Everything, and then some has gone wrong with the wedding preparations and now the huge order for mothers of newborns was a total disaster as the wrong order was sent.
I can't even see this is going to end on a good note. no way!
Candy and Michael do spend more charity time together and she really gets to know him better. Barry is off with his mother but Candance is still getting married to Barry. Hot steamy sex is always a teaser.
All the decisions are hers now to make after seeing things from Michaels's side...

'Bride wore Chocolate'is an absolutely delightful ‘Rom Com' you do not want to miss out on.

Take one cautious bride in Candace Woodrow + one boring fiancé add a dollop of delicious temptation in Michael Volgler and you got yourself an absolute treat on your hands.

The writing was fantastic and the secondary characters were a smile a minute from Candace’s Quirky Grandma to her interfering Mother-in-law to be.

This book is full of humor, witty dialogues, chocolate and delicious recipes with very entertaining baking instructions.

I also happened to find an useful recipe that I absolutely have to share..

 Maria's Favorite Hangover Remedy
1 banana, chopped
1/2 container chocolate syrup
3 ounces milk
3 ounces rum
2 Tylenol, crushed

Dim the lights and for God's sake, don't open the blinds.
Muffle the blender motor with a towel, then blend all ingredients until as frothy as a virgin's prom gown.
Don't bother with a glass; drink straight from the damned pitcher.
Repeat as necessary.
Then get to a mall and a Krispy Kreme store for further remedial help

‘Bride wore Chocolate’ is sure to satisfy your cravings for Chocolate and romance....just about every woman’s fantasy or close to it ;-)

Highly Recommended!

This was a cute story, but to be honest my favorite part of it was definitely the chocolate recipes. I wanted to drop everything at the beginning of each chapter and run into the kitchen and try them (or, to be honest, have a scantily clad but well-built man do it for me. He'd need to do it shirtless, because it's been so hot out lately. I'm just thinking of him, honest). This says good things about the recipes, but the fact that I was so willing to put the book down...not so much. Of course, I didn't put the book down, so read into that what you will....

This book is written in a light, breezy style that is fun to read, though at times the metaphors, which are cute, do get to be a bit much. They're creative, but perhaps used a bit too frequently. I did enjoy the characters, though, and will definitely sign on to read Maria's story, when it's released as an ebook. In all, this was a perfect don't-have-to-think-too-much-it's-summer book. With a HEA. And chocolate.

Lighthearted, humorous, and--as a lighthearted romance should be--predictable. Definitely a happily-ever-after ending. The metaphors and similes were often cute, but at times a bit over the top for my tastes, making the humor come across as too forced. I wanted Candace to kick Barry to the curb long before she did, and the fact that she continued to pander to him made me lose confidence in and respect for her as a character. She was difficult for me to relate to because of her prolonged indecisiveness.

One of the best things about this novel is the dessert recipes interspersed throughout. It's a unique twist, and it's one that will cause me to return to this novel again and again.

If you love no-brainer romances or are looking for a lighthearted summer read, this is the book for you, though Shirley Jump has written better romances than this one. Also, if you're into decadent chocolate desserts, you can't go wrong with a copy of this novel!

Overall a cute story and probably worth the free download. Candace and Mark both feel the pull to settle down at the age of 27 and 29. Maybe that was realistic about 10 years ago...but that's about the average marrying age in the US now. I do feel horrible for Barry that Candace waited so long to break things off with him--it would have been simple to do earlier on since none of the invitations went out! Certain elements of the book were a little cheesy/stereotypical: nickname of Candy for someone who is addicted to chocolate, owning a gift basket/cupcake/candy/etc store with your two best friends seems to be a popular trend in books recently, crazy mothers and in-laws are very much a realty but maybe a little overboard with all three family matriarchs being nuts in this book. Don't think I'll be continuing with the rest of the series.

Who knew I would enjoy a book about cheating so much? This was written is such a wonderful way. Candace was cheating on a great guy, her friends condoning it(even saying do it and get it out of your system) It is just so wrong! The book was funny and sexy though. I enjoyed it the whole way through.

Candace Woodrow and her two friends run Gift Baskets to Die For in Boston. Candance had a bad high school romance that ended in a miscarriage and she's determined to always plan ahead and be logical (unlike Mom, who's married multiple times). Things keep happening to sabotage the wedding to her "perfect" match Barry. Three weeks before the wedding, she has not dress cause the shop burned down. After a fruitless shopping trip, she has too much to drink and ends up in bed with hunk Michael Vogler. Nothing happened, but sparks ignite, especially after he becomes a client.

Candace tries to stick to her plan, but Michael tries to disrupt the plan. Eventually, they have sex, but she's still confused. Finally at her wedding she makes the right choice - NOT to marry Barry. Meanwhile, Michael has discovered being single isn't so great after finally finding the one woman he's fallen in love with. Fun story - recipes for chocolate between each chapter.

Candace is facing her wedding to Barry and has life all planned out. With a somewhat dysfunctional family and the chaos that surrounds them, her parents divorce, her mother marrying and divorcing at an extraordinary rate, a grandmother who acts like a teenager she thinks she wants a life that is all planned out. That is until she meets Michael and finds out what love and passion are all about and that having everything planned out without the passion is really not what she wants after all! She discovers this on the day of her wedding to Barry!

A Recommended Read! Taken from my review at RomanceJunkies.com;

Two years ago, Candace Woodrow and her two friends, Maria Pagliano and Rebecca, started a business called Gift Baskets to Die For. They started the business in her home, but the business has taken off and now they are working out of a storefront and making enough to pay the rent and give each of them a decent salary. With her wedding only three weeks away, everything should be perfect for her, but lately anything pertaining to the wedding seems to be doomed. Her DJ had a heart attack and the priest ran off with the church secretary, who turned out to be a male, instead of the female everyone thought he was. To top matters off, the dress shop burned down with her dress inside. Ever since she agreed to marry Barry, everything has been going wrong. Her madcap grandmother contends that all of these problems are a sign. If she believed in such things, she would have called the wedding off long ago. A very detail oriented person, she researches and analyzes every move she makes and has a very pragmatic attitude toward marriage that does not include love and romance. With her parents off on their own, living their own lives, the only family nearby is her Grandma Woodrow, a spry seventy-six-year-old retiree who lives on the other side of the duplex from Candace.

With only three weeks until the wedding and needing a dress, Maria and Rebecca suggest that they make it a girl’s night. After their failure to find the right dress that evening, they went out for dinner and drinks. That was the last thing Candace remembered until she woke up the next morning in a strange apartment in only her bra and panties. Through the doorway leading to the bathroom, she saw a gorgeous stranger in the process of shaving.

Michael Vogler, owner of Vogler Advertising, has not been able to get Candace off his mind since she stormed out of his apartment the day before. But he did not get her phone number and is not even sure of her name. Recently, one of their clients sent them a basket from a company called Gifts to Die For and everyone had loved the concept. In fact, one of his clients, a baby food manufacturer, is interested in sending out fifteen thousand of the baskets to expectant mothers in the area, advertising their product and a few other clients also wanted to add to these baskets. So the previous Friday, he had set up an appointment to meet with the owners of the business this afternoon.
Michael is surprised, but pleased, when he sees that Candace is one of the owners. As he sees her more often in the following days, he knows he is falling for her. But he has always steered away from commitment. After all, he has never seen a happy marriage and doesn’t believe that they actually exist. But one taste of this woman he has dubbed ‘Candy’ just may change his mind, if he can only convince her to give them a chance.

Deliciously funny and sexy, THE BRIDE WHO WORE CHOCOLATE, the first novel in award winning author Shirley Jump’s SWEET AND SAVORY series, is a hilarious and passionate contemporary romance that I found impossible to put down. The imagery created by Ms. Jump’s descriptive phrases will leave you with a smile, if not outright laughter. I totally loved this story and cannot wait to read the rest of the stories in this delightful series. This is one of the most entertaining stories I have read in some time and I rated it at five blue ribbons only because there was no higher rating. In addition to the scrumptious story, there are many delicious chocolate recipes, to which Ms. Jump adds an additional ingredient; humor. I have never had such fun reading a recipe and look forward to trying them out. With engaging characters, passion, clever repartee, gift baskets, a creative plot, lots of chocolate, romance and love, this is a story you will want to read more than once. If you love romantic comedy with a bit of spice, this is the book for you! But beware; this story will leave you with a longing for chocolate! THE BRIDE WORE CHOCOLATE is a definite keeper and a recommended read. Do not miss it!

This book ran quite a few emotions in me. There was a lot of:
1- laughter coming from me, a lot of desire for chocolate and the recipes contained in the book
2- “I don’t like “that” mother who doesn’t allow the boy and the girl to make their own decisions “(Let alone wearing muumuus)
3- some disdain for cheating (Don’t get me wrong I loved the story)
4- some coveting of the Lexus
5- some gratefulness for family
6- Enjoying your friends who will listen and be there for you.

Candace and her friends run a business together and are successful. She is weeks away from getting married to Barry Borkenstein (that name would have been my first clue to run in the opposite direction)! She has a well planned out life. Everything is defined and dependable. She is doing things for others and nothing for herself. When she and her friends go to a bar, she wakes up the next morning in a strange man’s bed not remembering how she got there or what happened. That is so unlike her. Fortunately for her nothing happened. But then she kissed the guy (Michael), her neat and planned out life goes spiraling out of control.

Candace also holds a secret to why her life is so planned. She has a crazy family that run in totally different directions. They crack me up. Candace volunteers everywhere. She even has a 3 legged dog. Her Mr. Right is an accountant who sticks to numbers and is dependable and safe. Funny thing is I never once read that she even loved him.

As time gets closer to her wedding, Michael and Candace run into each other often either by coincidence or on purpose. They keep talking and become closer and Candace becomes confused. She doesn’t know what to do. She thinks it is just cold feet.

Michael is a confirmed bachelor but finds himself questioning it. He has his own family issues that make him think love ever lasts.

Eventually everything comes out and someone gets hurt. But you have to sometimes go by your heart and not your head.

I really enjoy the recipes in the story. Every chapter has one. Right now, I really want one of those recipes or a Hershey’s kiss. The recipes are given with very specific directions depending on what your problems may be or whatever life is giving you at the moment.

Here is a small clip of one recipe:
"Smear butter all over a loaf pan and try not to cry in your grease, since we all know tears and butter don’t mix. Over medium heat, cook the sugar, milk, corn syrup, salt and chocolate. As it melts, think of it as all your troubles cooking away (okay, that analogy would probably only work on a cheesy talk show). Once the chocolate is melted and your kitchen smells a hell of a lot better than your life, keep the heat on until your candy thermometer reaches 234 degrees. Add the butter. Remove from heat. Make a list of all the things you want to change about your life while the fudge cools to 120 degrees. Add the vanilla; beat the daylights out of the mixture. Then add the nuts and marshmallows- add extra, depending on how bad your day has been. Spread in pan and let cool as long as you can possibly stand to wait. Cut into squares just a tad smaller than the opening of your mouth. "

I loved the ending. It was so cute! So if you have a sweet tooth and listening to your heart at the last minute than this book is for you. And just so you know, I am going to the grocery store right now to get some Hershey's kisses.
Even though I got the book for review. I bought my copy!

A light fun romance. The main character is Candace Woodrow, a planner, who just before her wedding is having major doubts. She meets a man, Michael Vogler, who makes her senses go wild but she isn't sure if she can trust her feelings or does she continue to plan. The book includes a lot of chocolate recipes. The book was a quick easy read.

This is the second book by Shirley Jump I've finished in the space of a week - my first experience of the author's writing was a recent title published by Harlequin Romance - and the difference in styles was immediately apparent with The Bride Wore Chocolate being more of a romantic comedy rather than a short category romance.

Before turning the first page, I had a good idea what would happen - it is still a romance novel, after all - but this was all about the journey and the thought processes as the main characters battled to cling on to their safety blanket.

The writing sparkled with wit and sass and I could relate to the characters instantly, even the secondary characters. I must confess to glossing over the recipes a little, even though they were all chocolate, but I think they were a nice touch with highly amusing instructions and names.

Instead, I chose to dive right back into the story, racing through each page. The tension and temptation leaps off the page as well as the fear and confusion and I was physically anxious on behalf of both Candace and Michael for differing reasons. From about halfway through the book, I started getting knots in my stomach and from that point to the end, it was like an adrenaline rush.

The end itself was quite abrupt and I actually looked for the next page without realising I'd finished at first, but in hindsight, it was in keeping with the style of the book and a good way to close the story. The plot was perhaps a little far-fetched but don't let reality cloud an excellent story and spoil what I have come to think of as a modern day fairy-tale.

I finished this book in two sittings but I would have done it in one by choice, however, two young children and eyes that refused to stay open put paid to that notion. I will be definitely be picking up the remaining two titles in the 'Sweet and Savory' series. I love it when a book makes me smile and drags me along on a roller-coaster ride so I would be more than happy to recommend The Bride Wore Chocolate to others.

Your soul mate, to some it’s easy to find, to Candace, it was more of pros against cons, and Barry fit her very organized way of life.

Three weeks before the wedding and so many things went wrong. First off, the store where Candace bought her wedding gown burned to the ground, along with her dress.
Then the invitations, and one thing after another. Her grandmother would say these are signs, but Candace did not believe in those signs. Barry was going to be her huband. Everything would go as planned.

Her best friends decide she needs a night on the town before the wedding. The next thing Candace knows is she is nearly naked in someone’s bed. But it’s not her bed, and it’s not Barry’s bed, so who’s bed is it?

A hunk of a gorgeous man! That’s who’s bed it is. Candace could hardly believe what she saw. And how did she end up there???!!!???!!! Ok, quick explanation and she is out of there. Only why did her friends let her go home with someone? And why can’t she keep thinking about Michael? Ok, back to work and she’ll put Michael out of here memory forever.

Candace and here friends own a gift basket shop. New client should be stopping in soon to talk about a very large new account with them. Guess who the new client is? Michael of course. So much for forgetting about him. The more Candace wants to forget him, the more she thinks about him. But Barry is her perfect match. But how can she keep thinking of Michael. A hunk every girl drools over.

Now it’s just days before the wedding. What is Candace to do? Barry or Michael, Michael or Barry? You have to read to see if everything goes as planned.

Plus you will savor all the chocolate recipes along the way. A bit of humor, family relationships, friendships and love all mixed into an enjoyable read.
