"After we'd been playing for around two weeks, something clicked in my chess mind and I started to think before making a move, instead of making a move and then thinking."Healy was 30 when he started playing chess. I am now 52 so even if I anticipate my opponent's move, I don't think I will be a great chess player. Healy even says: "Talent and youth - that's what's needed for success at chess; with the emphasis on youth."
Complete and total alcohol dependency, sleeping anywhere, not washing, violence...though there is the community who share the wine, a bottom-of-the-pile motley crew, friendships of a sort, but craziness and craving, leading to violence, though many can hardly stand up straight, and they rarely eat. And prison sentences.
Years pass.
Then, a lightening flash from the Gods, he is introduced to chess in prison, and now has an obsession to replace drink. Back outside in the World, chess brings normalcy of a sort, some success, he becomes a flavour of the month. But no happiness of any substance.
It's certainly the best description of addiction I've ever read. A great book in its way, I couldn't stop reading it.
