Mervyn is accustomed to the unusual and strange. People of all walks come to him with problems that only magic can solve. A wizard of no little skill, he enjoys the challenges that come with his job and that he can offer help to people who have nowhere else to go. Even fairies, long abused by wizards for the special energy they can provide, find their way to his door.

But when Callisto, a terrified and maliciously attacked fairy, shows up to ask for his help, he presents a challenge that even Mervyn has never encountered before—instead of a heart, Callisto has only an inadequate charm—a charm that will kill him in a matter of days if Mervyn does not find a solution.

This was a refreshingly cute story about Callisto who comes to Mervyn seeking help when a wizard steals his heart and replaces it with a charm that drains Callisto's energy. Mervyn is willing to help him but to do that he needs expertise from another fairy, who just happens to be Callisto's estranged brother, Denzil. Denzil and Mervyn do everything they can to get Callisto better before the mysterious wizard drains all of Callisto's life-force. In the meantime, they enlist some help from an Investigator friend to find the corrupted wizard and stop him from doing to other faeries what he did to Callisto.

I really adored this story. It's cute and easy to read with a few funny and lighthearted moments. I loved Callisto and how vulnerable he was. He was brought up to hate and fear wizards and as Mervyn is a wizard, he was afraid to ask for help. At first, he's just this drained man who can't do much but over the course of the book, he gets better and starts to blossom. I loved the fact he blushed whenever Mervyn was around and loved it even more when Mervyn would purposely tease Callisto so that he would blush. It was just so adorable. Mervyn, on the other hand, is very absentminded and stuck in his work but he lives to help faeries even though they don't trust him. When it comes to Callisto, he's happy to help him and realizes there's this connection between them.

My only issues with the story is that the world building is a little weak, making me confused at times because it's not really explained nor explored. Besides that, I wish there had been more romance. What there is I found extremely sweet but I would have like to explore Mervyn and Callisto's budding relationship a little more after they decide to take things further.

In the end, this was a very good book that I'm glad I read. I don't know how else to describe it besides cute and lighthearted. It was different than anything else I've read especially the conflict that Callisto has to go through, which is why I considered it to be refreshing. It's very easy to read and flows nicely and besides the fact that I felt things could have been a little deeper and fleshed out, I still enjoyed it very much. I hope we get the sequel soon because Denzil and Malone (the Investigator friend) definitely had some vibes going on between them and THAT story will be fun to read!

This was a pretty interesting story, a fairie has had his heart stolen and replaced with a mechanical device so a wizard can steal his magic.
He finds another wizard willing to help him, because without help, he will die in a matter of days.
There is magic and trust and mistrust and an endearingly annoying brother and great aunt, but the romance is very minimal.
LT3 always has very sweet non-explicit stories, and that's just fine with me, but I wish just a bit more time had been focused on the MC's romance. That said, I'll read the next one when it comes out and hope its about Malone and a very annoyed Baldric! ;)

This is a very sweet and endearing book. A greatly appreciated reprieve while I was reading a difficult book. But it sounds horrible when I call it a reprieve, because it's not just a 'filler'. It has quite the interesting story line to it, no great mystery, but the whole idea of stealing hearts, having a mechanical one, is an intriguing one.

Ms Miller has never been a favourite, her works have usually fallen short of what I generally like, however this one exceeded my expectations and was indeed really really enjoyable. It's a simple, sweet book and a wonderfully gentle read.

While the premise of this was really cool and interesting, the execution was juvenile. The story is very boring and repetitive and there's way more focus on Callisto's relationship with his brother than Callisto's developing romance with Mervyn. I was also annoyed that all three characters spend a lot of time arguing and trying to figure out who the wizard is who had attacked Callisto, all while Callisto's life is at serious risk and they should have prioritized getting the fake heart thing out of him.

Also - the author doesn't just leave little bread crumb clues regarding the identity of the wizard who had attacked Callisto. Instead, entire loaves of bread are practically thrown at the reader from the start of the story.

Overall, the execution fell way below where I wanted it to be, which is unfortunate because the premise was awesome.

Нудная середина и нудный конец. Я ожидала больше, чем "она его за муки полюбила, а он ee за состраданье к ним".

The "comfort" bit of hurt/comfort was overdone, trying to compensate for falling in love, I guess. Once Callisto's new charm was in place, everything slowed down to a crawl.

Mervyn makes a living creating charms and working spells to help the people who come to his door. Normally a wizard is the last place a fairy would go to for help, but Mervyn has been known to freely give his services to those fairies that come to him, without demanding a bond or any service from them. To be bound to a wizard, especially against one’s will, is a bit of a taboo (at best) for fairies and a life-sentence, at worst.

That’s why Callisto comes to Mervyn. He had seen the fairy-lights on the wizard’s door and hoped that the sign of a fairy’s favor meant he could trust the man inside. See he has already come across one wizard–-and it has left him without a heart and with a badly working charm in its place. As that wizard uses their connection to Callisto, Callisto is being slowly drained of his magic…and very soon his life-force. If Mervyn can not help him it is very likely that in three days he will be dead.

I totally swear that I didn’t do this on purpose, but it seemed I really needed some metal-heart-swap in my life, because this is the second book in the last week I have reviewed with that in it (the first being Clockwork Heart by Heidi Cullinan). Turned out pretty well for me since both books were great. This isn’t a story of steampunk, though. Here we have magic and fairies and wizards (oh my!).

Also, there are fewer orgies here. Fewer as in none. This is a very sweet, no-sex story. Which I loved. The romance between Mervyn and Callisto is still all that I want it to be, just there is no sex going on on page. Seeing how I mostly prefer this, I didn’t have any problems with it. Plus, there is mystery and flirting and magic…what more could I want?

While the whole bad-guy thing was a tad obvious, I can’t say I cared all that much. I still think there are shady things going on with certain other wizards, and I’d love to be proven right (or, wrong) in another book in this series. Not to mention that Denzil and Malone have a lovely hate-crush going on.

The workings of this fantasy world were very well done. And quite interesting. The book doesn’t spend too much time getting overly descriptive of either the magic or the world, but it really doesn’t need to. The story tells itself with just enough to make you want to know more, but not so much you feel like you fell into a Wikipedia page by accident.

I had a lot of fun reading this and would love to see more in this universe. I totally recommend it if you are looking for some light fantasy with supper cute protagonists.

This was a very good story. It's a pretty straight forward fantasy with just the perfect hint of romance. There is action but the moments of tension are brief. A simple but very well put together story, eloquent writing without the superfluous drama so many authors indulge in, vivid but subtle world building, and the characters feel real and are incredibly endearing. They have distinct personalities, but are not caricatures of themselves the way you find in a lot of romance books. And while there is character growth, and it is a full length book, it is a fairly brief story, so there are no dramatic changes or personality shifts.

I would very much love to read more from this world, or read more about these characters. I love Miller's writing style. I'm not sure how to describe it, other than to say that it's very subtle. It's so smooth and well written that you never really notice the author--the exposition and dialogue feels so natural you are never knocked out of the story. Which is a somewhat rare and very appealing characteristic.

It's a full length book, but the story moves so smoothly that it honestly feels quite a bit shorter. I would definitely recommend it for a light read, something to keep you occupied and happy for a few hours when you are looking for something sweet, with lovely characters, and no angst.

I need to make this quick... I liked Stolen Hearts! I did! But it wasn't great also.

What I liked:
- The MC's are really sweet and likeable. They have a super slow-burning start into a relationship.
- Derin is a great secondary character.
- The charms-wizards-and-fairy world was interesting, but

What I didn't like that much:
- not enough developed on the one hand (wizard-fairy relationships, i.e.) and too repetitive on the other (charms, charms, and charms)
- the showdown was meh, the villain less than meh

There isn't a sequel yet, but I probably wouldn't read it anyway. This is not a bad book. Again, I liked reading it, but there are books that I like more, so...

***

This book counts for my following reading challenges 2015:
- 100 books in total
- 20 books, trying something new

Задумка прекрасная, мир неплохой, герои даже вполне себе симпатичные, но писать автор ни шиша не умеет. На десятом за полкниги he smiled shyly захотелось побиться об стенку головой.

While the premise was interesting -- and I thought, initially, that Callisto was endearing -- but the rest was buried in a MEH story that dealt more with the charms rather than the romantic progress. Heck, I thought Callisto had more emotionally invested moments with his brother rather than with Mervyn. I ended up feeling very bored :(

It didn't help that the villain's identity was, well, not so surprising and almost too cliche.

Real simplistic writting. No development of characters. No explanation of this world/realm/reality? Could be better.

Nice cover.

Very surprised not to see people commenting on how utterly disturbing this 'romance' is. The main character is a doctor to all intents and purposes and uses his treatment of the obviously much younger man to both seduce him and essentially control him. He knows exactly what he's doing the entire time, never questions the appropriateness and is super smug about it, even with the young man's brother, which adds an extra layer of eww. A lot of lip service is given to it being consensual, but there is no consent with the kind of power imbalance that's implicit it the creepy AF relationship, especially since the kid would have died without his help and will likely always need it. This is gross. It's also the opposite of romantic in any way. File this under 'romance doesn't have to be explicit or rapey to be disgusting.' and 'FFS, don't creep on patients.'

Interesting world-building, in which wizards can bind fairies to take their energy. One day Callisto, a fairy, shows up at Mervyn's door missing a heart. Mervyn, who deals with health charms, is able to not only help Callisto deal with his current condition as well as search for the perpetrator.

This was a gem of a read. I bought it quite a while ago and because of the long list of unread books on my Kindle it went unnoticed. Then I was browsing through my titles for my next read and saw this one, double checked the summary one more time and settled down. Needless to say I was annoyed with myself for having taken so long to get around to it.

I loved Stolen Hearts! Everything about it just captured me.

Mervyn and Callisto were wonderful characters and their slow paced romance was perfect, allowing the reader to get time to know them and fall for the characters themselves. These two characters complimented each other so well, and the side characters helped bring the story to life even more. I think I'm not the only one hoping to get a peek in at Callisto's brothers story... and hopefully it'll involve another certain wizard. But I'll wait and see.

I think what won me over especially, aside from the characters themselves, was the magic. I love a book with magic, and when it's well done it's even better, and this was the case with this story. I found it fascinating, the way the charms worked and the skill required, the way we were given a subtle view of the world beyond our main characters that we'll hopefully get to know more of. Everything about this just had me enchanted. Adored it!

Cannot wait for the next installment and to revisit these characters, I highly recommend you read this one ♥

I'd like to give this book a higher rating because I quite enjoy stories by this author but I just can't.
The idea of a stolen heart was interesting but the plot and characters were not. I had to stop reading several times because I was plain bored and wanted to read something more exciting.

There are too many things left open and I'm not sure if there'll ever be a sequel.

mervyn (whom i continually called merlin while i was reading) is a wizard. wizards are seen by society to be a little better than the rest because they can perform magic. their magic is better, though, with the help of fairy magic. because of this, many wizards force bondings upon fairies, and fairies hide the fact that they are fairies to escape that fate. one day, callisto (continually called castillo in my head) arrives without his heart. it was taken from him by a wizard and his life force is slowly being drained by the wizard using him for magic. mervyn determines that he can help him and sets out to find the wizard who did this. he enlists the help of denzil (continually called denzel as i was reading), a fairy with whom he has worked before. mervyn figures out how to remove the heart charm with denzil's help and they figure out who did it with an investigator's help.
i liked this; liked the fact that mervyn was more interested in the magic than in using people. i didn't really like the fact that the story felt kind of half finished, as .

I mentioned it in an update, but I think Jordan L. Hawk and KJ Charles have ruined me for this genre. In this book there was an extremely heavy emphasis on the magic, the supernatural world, the charms & the spells...to the detriment of the relationship building and character growth. I never really felt what connection was supposedly established and I never connected with the characters much at all. Plus, I figured out the culprit stealing magic/hearts almost immediately and never really bought the brother's complete innocence/involvement. Just didn't seem probable.

Anyway, I know there's not been another book in over 5 years and I'm not sure if another one is coming (despite the #1 volume designation)...but if there were I might be interested, if only to get a better handle on that character (should it focus on the brother).

Mervyn the wizard gets a late night request for a charm modification. It seems that a fairy named Callisto has lost his heart- literally. He was jumped, mugged, and when he awoke his heart was gone. In its place was a crude charm that would keep him alive. In turn, Callisto’s life energy is being drained by the evil wizard who made the charm.

Always up for a challenge, Mervyn assures the fairy that he will recreate the charm and will find out who has done this terrible thing. After all, it would seem from the design of the charm that the manufacturer’s intention was to drain multiple fairies at the same time. In the process, both Mervyn and Callisto get far more than they bargained for.

Stolen Hearts is a light sweet story. Likeable characters. A nice Sunday afternoon read.

While I really liked the wizard/fairy aspect of this book I just would have liked more romance between these two..
Callisto needs help because a bad wizard puts a spell on him to steal his energy which ends up taking his heart so he goes to Mervyn for help.
Mervyn helps him with the charm to make the pain less for him and to find the wizard responsible.
While parts of this book were very good, for me personally this one just did not grab me very well.
You get a little bit of action and a little bit of romance with this book.
So as much as I hate to say this because I really do love fantasy books, this one was just not for me...

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.

I liked the story very much, and since it says "Book 1" on the cover, I'm hoping she'll continue with the characters. There wasn't a lot of specific world development--you're given an overall impression of how the universe works, but there's not enough detail to make it clear. Since most of the story is contained to a single location, this isn't an issue. If any continuation of the story follows the character who does police work, further world development would be a necessity.

I may edit the review in the future to add thoughts on the characters, but generally, I enjoyed the book and I'll probably read it again after I'm done with a few more on my list.

I wish we had a sequel for Stolen Hearts, because the way it was released in the past, was to short and undeveloped. Nonetheless I liked the main plot. The main romance between wizard Mervyn and fairy Callisto, was also to undeveloped. Actually at the end it only begun to develop.

This story was fresh and truly enjoyable. All character were interesting and I wouldn't mind reading sequel or other new books in this series. The writing style and plot kept my attention till the last page and I have to admit that this story was way to short. Hope they will be more!

While the idea - a fairy had his heart stolen and replaced with a charm - is a very good one, the story and especially the characters didn't really grab me for whatever reason. I can't put my finger on why, though. :/ Maybe it was too little background for all of them, maybe because Mervyn pretty easily found a replacement/solution for the missing heart, maybe because there where some things hinted at but not explained... :(

So, an okay book for a lazy Sunday afternoon on the couch but unfortunately not more and not interesting enough to check out the next part.

Miller's story is steampunk high fantasy fun. The world and its characters are intriguing; there are certainly more stories to be had, and I would pick them up in a heartbeat if they were written.

The relationships, between the brothers and their potential paramours, were developed gently and slowly, but there wasn't a lot of development in this book. The focus of the story is the mystery and the fixing of Callisto's heart. Creatively, smoothly written, with person-centered instead of world-centered prose, it kept my interest but didn't wow me; it was too G-rated for a wow. Sweet, though.

I want more. I NEED more. This was such a great and interesting idea, with so many interesting characters and plots. I love each and every character because they all have a specific personality and their own motivation, and it really was awesome to discover them.
The chase was as interesting as the scientific part of the book, and I really, really liked it. I thing there is a second book planned? I hope so, because it was awesome!
