I enjoyed this tale of a wide-ranging young dog whose speed, stamina and courage save not only his life but the life of his friend, a young man on a cattle ranch. Gray doesn't trust people after ill-treatment from some men, and is gradually encouraged to trust his new friend. But repeated encounters with other animals such as wolves, a jackrabbit and a huge cranky Longhorn bull are the main thrust of the story. I have no doubt that the author either saw or was told of all the incidents in this story, and I enjoyed the portrayal of the natural world.
