It's back to main story line time as Allen the Alien returns to Earth as a Coalition of Planets envoy, looking to find out more about Mark's father, Omni Man. The Viltrumites themselves have come to check on Mark's overseeing of Earth. And while this all happening Mark gets his chance with Eve, doesn't he? 'Citing! 7.5 out of 12, Three Stars.

Lots of world-building in this volume. Allen the Alien is becoming more integral to the series and the groundwork for that begins here. Anytime we see Allen is a good thing. He's such a fun character. Meanwhile, Mark's going through things many people his age does, wondering if college is for him, especially since he's already a paid government employee. I like how Kirkman always keeps the series moving, never allowing it to grow stagnant, unlike the Big 2 who always eventually reset for the next creative team.

SO MANY MOMENTS, so many great characters in this volume! We have a little bit of Allen, a bit of Nolan, a bit of Debbie and Oliver, a lot of Viltrumites moment . Yup, it was fun! So far the second best volume. Still a bit too scattered, but a great time overall!

Original review (from 2016):

Invincible, vol. 9: Out of this World collects issues #42-47

To be perfectly honest, this could have been rounded down to 4 stars. It was a solid volume with nothing major happening, BUT every element and character I love in Invincible was present in this collection. Mark, Allen, Mama Grayson and Oliver. We had more than one encounter with the Viltrumites and a few moments that serve to develop more relationships between the members of The Guardians of the Globe. We also have more of Mark's personal life. Even when I love Invincible and his battles and efforts to save the world, what's truly special to me are the little moments. The great counterbalance that Mark's romantic life, his struggles as a student and those beautiful moments as a son and as a big brother provide inside this superhero epic of a story.
It was nice seeing him struggling after his break up and losing his way in college, because those problems make the story relatable. Kirkman really knows how to maintain the story human.

I have to say, I really enjoyed Allen's journey, from his fight against Immortal, his conversation with Invincible and his run with the Viltrumites. Seriously, every time Allen is on page my love for this series elevates.

I reached the point where I was having a long and exhausting day and the only thing I could think to cheer me up was picking up Invincible and, as always, it didn't disappoint. Guess this is one of my favorite series now and I can't wait to read the next volume because the last issue was such a surprise that only promises more action and excitement.

Another 3.5. It's a lot of world building. But it helps for the events coming soon. (If you didn't read my volume 1 review I already read this up to volume 19 or so.)

My favorite part of this entire volume is Allen. He's actually my favorite character. He's about to embark on some grade A shit. You gonna see some awesome stuff come down, and Allen and Nolan together <3 YES! Also loved the stuff with Oliver, another one of my favorite characters. So many good ones actually!

Anyway solid volume with it about to become amazing in the next volume or so.

Some great stuff here. I'm totally invested and LOVING the hell out of Allen the Alien. All the space stuff is quirky and light even when it's so bloody.

I'm sure that'll change later, but for now, it's just the right tone.

Big plot stuff brewing. We're getting there.

The main human point that this installment focuses on is Mark wanting to quit school. He’s failing, barely goes, can’t study. He’s thinking the whole time, “what’s the point?” And honestly, I also can’t see the point. It’s not like he’s going to have a real job after he finishes college. His talent is in defending Earth and helping out other societies in the galaxy.

It’s the humanistic side of the Invincible’s story that really keeps me reading. While I love his adventures. I like to see how he just deals with life. He’s a teenage boy with a government job to protect Earth. He lives in a dorm and occasionally attends classes. But it’s so hard for him. He’s just broke up with his girlfriend and there is this potential with Eve… It’s convoluted just how teenage life should be.

As for Mark’s superpowered adventures, this book covers a few things. A surprising event happens (don’t worry, I won’t spoil you) and more importantly, Mark gets a visit from a lady Viltrumite. She’s coming to check on his progress since he’s the designated Viltrumite of Earth. She informs him that someone will be back, whether it’s five months or five years to see if he’s started organizing Earth’s takeover. A minor fight ensues and Mark is left with a lot of anxiety over the whole thing.

I love the perfect balance of Mark’s personal life plus his life as Invincible. I never knew how much I wanted to see that in a superhero comic. But apparently I did.

Another fantastic volume , but what this issue suffered from was a lack of a fixed storyline or a decent villain .

There were just a lot of low-ranking villains/thugs and repeatedly changing storylines .

Of course , one can argue that it maybe partly because Kirkman is broadening the scope of his story , expanding his universe , but then again there really weren't many new villains or heroes or even fringe character added.

That said , once again Invincible remains entertaining , because it gives you that jolly good feels, and makes you feel it's relatable somewhat. I don't know 🤷‍♀️, I just simply liked it , and despite no real progress , i still enjoyed the hell out of it

This book was quite cool, we have Mark dealing with the fallout of last volume. There is drama with him and Eve, will they get together? Also a new Viltrumite appears and asks him if he will join the Vitrumite empire or not? So that was an interesting fight and then some stuff with Allen and he while going away gets himself trapped only to rescue Nolan. (Its a whole story). And then there is the stuff with him tryna stop different villains and this time its Mag Maniac and Tether tyrant which is becoming an interesting fight and Oliver joins him too! Overall great volume as we build towards the Viltrumite war!

Not that I didn't enjoy this, but I feel I owe my enjoyment to the manner in which I've been reading Invincible and not to the quality of the story — an issue at a time, between long hours of textbook studies. Since I have stuck around to Volume 9, I am by now acquainted with the lore and the characters. Opening this comic is like talking to a newly made friend — you want to keep talking to find out more about them, even when they're only just repeating themselves from yesterday because there really isn't all that much to tell.

I'll read on and probably continue being underwhelmed.

Wow solid world building for things to come, I can feel the tension.

World: The art is great, I’ve said it many times the bright and beautiful art and the wonderfully emotive characters really sets the book in a unique tone. When shit does happen the jarring effect is so much more cause of this. The world building is pretty amazing this time around, the pieces that are moving into place and the things that I can sense down the line, it’s gonna be amazing. I love how Kirkman plays the long game with this series, he does not throw sudden curve balls at readers, all the pieces are there for readers to see, you may forget about this piece but Kirkman has showed you that shit will go down. I can feel the tension from the world building, shit is going down soon.

Story: The story is pretty solid here, there is the stuff out of costume which is good drama and there is the stuff in the suit which is great superhero storytelling and it’s so well balanced together. I see a lot of moving pieces here and they are all interesting, there is not a weak story at all. I love the family dynamic that’s happening, I love the Eve and Mark thing and how bad it is. I love the stuff with Cecil and the cloak and dagger, it’s gonna be awesome.

Characters: Mark is great, he’s growing as a character and his depth is good, he’s not perfect but you see the progression there. Then there’s the family and the Guardians and the villains and the space stuff with all those characters. They are all so good and there are enough quiet moments there for these characters to mean something and have weight.

This was a deceptively quiet arc but the tension is building and I can feel it.

Onward to the next book!

Invincible is the best superhero comic book in the universe.

The story of Invincible keeps chugging on. "Invincible" is pushing himself harder and getting stronger, top of the world and loving it. "Mark" has his personal life and education falling apart around him. It looks like these days it's easier to be Invincible and punch bad guys than to be Mark and go to school and talk to the girl you like. The Viltrumite plot line gets more focus this volume, with Allen getting more prominence and what looks to be a prominent role in the plot going forward.

Invincible Vol. 9 Out Of This World collects issues 42-47 of the series by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley.

A Viltrumite agent arrives at Earth to check on Mark's progress to prepare Earth for enslavement.

This arc contained a lot of world building and setting up for future storylines. We get some progress with Mark and Eve's relationship and Mark's younger brother Oliver is quickly maturing and gaining superpowers. And more Allen the Alien!

Something about this one was just kind of ho-hum for me. I can't quite put my finger on it, though. There is a decent balance of action and drama. The humor hasn't gone anywhere. The creative team still has a knack for clever transitions.

I just...you know what it might be? It kind of felt like a whole lot of set up. It's as if this volume is telling the audience that some pretty big events are coming soon.

In this volume, Mark considers his life path: does he really need college? For a superhero, that's an interesting question. How long can Mark continue to pretend he's just a normal kid who happens to have superpowers?

Allen the Alien is a great character. Not much else has happened in this volume, it's actually the closest the series has gotten to the territory of filler, but it's fine. I just hope we don't get any more of those recap chapters or else I'll start skipping them!

This was the first volume I thought was really solid. A more complex situation, Allen the Alien, bringing together old threads, and other good stuff. All the college events to make Mark relatable are completely pointless, though.

Slowed down recently on Invincible, but will keep at it. I have digital access to most of the 25 volumes. I should be okay to see this thru to the end. Seems kind of simple/basic, but what the heck, it is a comic book series. I am enjoying the title.

Another good one. It's really starting to pick up now and it's way more consistent as compared to previous volumes. Pretty much no issues with anything anymore and I hope it only gets better from here on out.
