Neil Cole was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. While studying at CSULB he encountered the Good News of Jesus Christ and turned his life over to Him, never looking back. His journey in God's kingdom brought him to serve in a mega church, a local community church and now small rapidly multiplying organic churches that meet in homes, campuses and places of business all over the world. Neil travels around the world sowing the seeds of God's kingdom, catalyzing the development of organic church networks and coaching leaders. He has been married for over 26 years to Dana and has three adult children--Heather, Erin and Zach.
Great discussion of the importance of reading the Bible. Neil Cole suggests that we will develop good interpreting practices by reading the Bible in context. He provides a practical and workable way for people to do this.
A gem. I read it once in college and let it sit untouched on my bookshelf. I wasn't to a point then where I was mature enough or positioned properly to appreciate it. Now, looking at a mission field that seems impossible, it looks like the only plausible strategy.
This is a powerful book. The author describes a simple process for growing and multiplying disciples. Groups of 2 or 3 meet together weekly to answer a set of questions about their relationship with God, what they’ve read in the Bible that week, common areas of sin, and being a testimony for Christ. Each week the group is to read 25-30 chapters of the Bible. That’s basically it. The book describes the philosophy of the approach and describes the author’s discovery and experience with the approach. While the author is very compelling, my concern is that I don’t really understand how these groups are supposed to relate to the church itself, long-term. If these groups are making and growing disciples, then what is the church for? I haven’t tried it yet so I can’t really critique it, but I’m intrigued. My sister’s church has started a few groups like this and the people involved have said it’s been really impacting. So that’s what made me want to read it and try it out. For what it’s worth, there are a number of grammatical typos in the book.
This book by Neil Cole is one exceptional book. It as a required read for one of my classes, however, I found that this book was excellent in presenting the necessity for doing discipleship in groups. He points out that discipleship is meant to be done this way because for many, this does not effectively happen within the four walls of church in the way that Jesus modeled it.
There's something to be said about effective accountability and true transparency that happens in a group the way that Cole speaks of that often cannot happen in a large body or collective. The first seven chapters are the set up to explaining much of the why, whereas the remainder of the book gives you the how. I think that this is great and depending on your personal taste, you can simply go to the part of the book that matters most to you, although I would personally recommend ready it fully to gain the full benefit.
Enjoyed Cole’s sobering look about the nature of discipleship in our church today. Cole’s premise of “Life Transformation Groups” focuses on heavy weekly scriptural reading, accountability, and evangelism/group multiplication.
I will definitely use some of his ideas and strategies in the future. Although, I highly doubt I will follow his advice word for word.
My favorite emphasis of the book was the idea that we have made discipleship built upon man-made curriculum and tradition rather than the word of God!
The book is both excellent and depressing. I love what the author is doing and thank God for people like him. It is his implicit assumption that everyone can be like him, everywhere that I struggle with. If he is correct, the just about everyone I know is a failure. Thankfully, after making me depressed there was sufficient encouragement to try something different along the lines he is proposing. So, we will see.
A very good book on how to make disciples, including oneself. A simple strategy of extensive weekly Bible reading (25-30 chapters), accountability questions and a focus on praying for the salvation of others to be done in groups of 2 or 3 and which are encouraged to multiply regularly. A practical challenge to fulfill the Great Commission without the need for lots of training or any experts. The best focus was on affirming the power of the Word of God to transform lives and the sufficiency of the Holy Spirit as the Teacher.
Cole' thesis can be best summed up in this statement, Chrisians need "to be fed by a steady and voluminous intake of Scipture with no purpose other than to hear from God and obey His voice!" For Cole this means spending at least thirty minutes each day reading the Bible. The purpose of this book is to show how a strong Christian is one who is reproducing disciples for Christ.
This was a pretty good book. Cole highlights some of the reasons that discipleship is ineffective in many churches. He offers suggestions for effective discipleship, and while they are very challenging, he backs them up with logical arguments and specific examples from his own experience.
An introduction to the concept of a "Life Transformation Group" or LTG. It's a great concept that is simply about getting people to engage together and encourage a deeper relationship with God. If you want to move deeper in your faith give it a go.
