Discipleship

Rate this book
DISCIPLESHIP is a 12 chapter guide that looks practically at what it means to be a disciple of Jesus in every area of life. As Morgan states, "It is intended to be, along practical lines, an aid to the disciples of Jesus by endeavoring to show in some measure the eminent practicability of being a Christian, in the power of the life communicated by and sustained in Christ through the Holy Spirit." A great read for new believers and mature Christians alike! G. Campbell Morgan (1863-1945) was a well-known and highly regarded preacher and Bible teacher in England. He worked closely with D. L. Moody, F. B. Meyer and Martyn Lloyd-Jones and for over 20 years was pastor of Westminster Chapel. He left an amazing legacy in written books and sermons that still encourage, instruct and challenge today!

Reverend Doctor George Campbell Morgan D.D. was a British evangelist, preacher and a leading Bible scholar. A contemporary of Rodney "Gipsy" Smith, Morgan preached his first sermon at age 13. He was the pastor of Westminster Chapel in London from 1904 to 1919, and from 1933 to 1943, pausing briefly between to work at Biola in Los Angeles, which he eventually handed over to Martyn Lloyd Jones.

Morgan was a prolific author, writing over 60 works in his lifetime, not counting the publishing of some of his sermons as booklets and pamphlets. In addition to composing extensive biblical commentaries, and writing on myriad topics related to the Christian life and ministry, his essay entitled "The Purposes of the Incarnation" is included in a famous and historic collection called The Fundamentals—a set of 90 essays edited by the famous R. A. Torrey, who himself was successor to D. L. Moody both as an evangelist and pastor—which is widely considered to be the foundation of the modern Christian Fundamentalist movement.

This book was a great blessing to me, as well as a challenge to a more committed walk with Christ. It was written 100 or so years ago and is at times, difficult to read. But as you labor to define words, you find great truths that make your heart rejoice. I will plan to read more books by Morgan in the future.

Excellent book on discipleship! Has such deeper lessons than a lot of modern day discipleship books. He breaks discipleship down to show chapters on the Disciple at Home, Work, or at Play. Definitely a thorough read on both practicals and theological work in showing what it means to be Jesus's disciple.

This gives some interesting perspectives on discipleship, but wouldn't be my first go-to resource on the topic. That being said, discipleship is a difficult topic to write about, and this is an informative book.

Morgan really focuses on hitting different parts in a disciples life and puts heavy weight on not neglecting each area. For each area is important as one determines himself/herself to follow Christ whole-heartedly!
