Le Père Roger Buliard a passé quinze ans de son sacerdoce en étant envoyé comme missionnaire dans l'Arctique. On y découvre la vie des Inuk, Esquimau, dans les steppes de la Terre Stérile, les pratiques de chasses, alimentaires etc, et même religieuse, autour des années 1940, puis la conversion au catholicisme qu'a tenté d'accomplir le Père Buliard.

Ils sont d'écrits comme voleurs, menteurs sournois, égocentriques du fait des assassinats qui les ont poussés à se disperser sur la glace pour survivre... On en a un portrait très négatif. Ils ont cependant un fort sens de la communauté et pourtant sont égoïstes, voleurs, menteurs sans honte et meurtriers fins s'il leur faut éliminer la menace.
Ce sont eux qui tuent d'instinct primitif comme certains animaux sauvages et ils appellent ça de la légitime défense, alors même que l'autre n'a rien fait.
Mais ils ont une grande hospitalité. En revanche, ils tuent les bébés femmes au possible parce qu'une femme n'est pas une chasseuse, et que c'est une bouche en trop à nourrir.

Le livre se lit très bien, on y inclut des termes esquimaux et termes techniques mais tout se lit bien, en revanche la partie sur la religion est très longue et lassante. Si ce monde vous intéresse, je le recommande vivement tout de même, à savoir que la vie dure là-bas a beaucoup changé comme l'indique le dernier chapitre.

4 stars - "Inuk" by Roger Bullard is a fascinating look at the Inuit of far northern Canada. Bullard Spent 15 year as a Catholic Priest/Missionary among the Inuit in the 1930's and 1940's. This was still early enough in contact between the Inuit and outsiders to get a good look at their culture and lives. Bullard was an astute observer and recorder of their way of life. Very, very interesting, although this book will have very narrow general appeal. If you have an interest in this area, I recommend the book.
