I think that this is great guide for beginners. It would be nice if it had more listings but it has really helped me to learn about the birds I'm photographing in my area. It has a very easy to use color coded tabs for quickly identification of birds by their color. I think it gives just enough info to not overwhelm someone new to birding. Great for young or new birders to get them started. Fit's nicely into a backpack or jacket pocket.

The first bird book in our household was purchased in Fields, Oregon during our only visit to Malheur wildlife refuge--back before we were serious birders.

This is a great introductory book because it sorts by color and provides good photos for reference. Start here, novice.
