Yurara Tsukinowa is a quiet girl who can see spirits and sense their emotions. Not wanting to seem abnormal, she hides her secret until she meets Mei Tendo and Yako Hoshino, two guys who use their spiritual powers to ward off vengeful spirits. The dormant guardian spirit in Yurara arises and a strong-willed beauty with the power to release souls emerges!
On Yurara's first day of high school, she finds her assigned seat is occupied--by a ghost! Mei and Yako cannot banish the spirit, and Yurara's other self is released...
Chika Shiomi has an amazing talent for depicting chilling and provocative horror stories that appeal to both shojo and shonen readers. Having created manga since 1993, starting with short stories in Akita Shoten's Mystery Bonita magazine, she has had a bountiful career of publishing both long-running series and short stories that have become popular both in Japan and abroad. Shiomi-sensei loves to travel and listen to Guns 'n Roses.
So I am still in the mood for some ghost busting, and I came across this one. I wasn't sure what to think of it at first. A shoujo ghost hunting story? Um, this could go two ways, and I was hoping it would go the right way. Now I read it I am not entirely sure if I liked it all the time, but the ghost busting was pretty epically done.
Let's start at the beginning, it is a new school year and Yurara (I just love her name) isn't really looking forward to going to school. She is a quiet girl, but she can also see (and sometimes hear) ghosts. People are weirded out by her as she at times just starts crying or stares into nothing. But Yurara's first day is going to be pretty awesome (if you want to call it that) as she attracts the attention of not one guy, but two when a ghost appears at Yurara's desk. Did I mention both dudes are very popular and wanted by the other girls. Yup, insert drama. *sighs*
Both they guys are hot, duh, of course this is shoujo, but they also have spiritual powers. Yep, what a coincidence, right? :P Each of them have a secret fear or something going on that makes them react a certain way. Like Hoshino who is afraid of water due to something that happened in his youth, and we have no clue yet what Meiwa's problem is. Oh, and did I mention that the guys don't really like each other? What a surprise!
Yurara has another surprise, she has a guardian spirit that likes to pop out at times. Also no surprise again Yurara turns from cute, but quiet girl, to a rambunctious sexy older sister type as her guardian spirit awakes from her sleep. I loved Yurara's other side, but I was a bit pissy that it seemed the guys fell for that girl instead. In the chapters I read they both really look forward to the transformation, Meiwa even pushing and trying to force her out of Yurara in ways I would kick a guy in the nuts for.
Meiwa was the biggest problem I had with this book. He is quite the pervert, keeps touching Yurara even after many many many many times of her saying no. He hugs her out of nowhere, touches her, and even one time pops in while she is changing (OK, he did try to save her from a ghost, but then proceeding to ogle her tiny boobs *sighs*). I don't get how I ever liked that kind of character, but these past years I am growing more and more annoyed with this character type. No, it is not good that someone just touches a girl (or reverse) like that without her permission. Especially if the girl has said no multiple times. No, you may not kiss her suddenly. Keep your hands and lips and other parts to yourself unless she wants you to touch her.
But the story is still interesting, the ghosts are scary (and sad), and I just love it when Yurara sends them on to better places. It is quite beautiful to see them go from scary to normal looking as they finally find the peace they want. I am still curious about the guardian spirit inhabiting Yurara and how that one came to be there.
Plus I want to know more on who the guys will pick. Yurara as she is or Yurara the super-exorcist? I am not a big fan of love triangles, or should we call this a love quartet, but for some reason it does fit with this story.
The art is also pretty nice, the designs are typical shoujo.
All in all, even with some issues, I still want to continue reading this manga.
A shojo ghost hunter story. This volume was okay. I’ll pick up v2 if I see it for cheap but probably won’t search it out.:) I just wanted more information on how Yurara’s other self works. I assume that’s covered in later volumes!
Not what I had planned to read next, but I want to reread Yurara this year so that I can finally read all of the follow-up/spin-off series, Rasetsu. I love Chika Shiomi because she really does have a knack for tackling interesting supernaturally-charged stories. My only gripe is that I don’t really care for her love interests since they can be jerks. But otherwise I have a fun time reading her different series!
3.5 - Strange and supernatural. It did, sadly, get annoying at times. Occasionally there were major stereotypes (one character was made up of them) but otherwise a fairly fresh story.
I vaguely remember reading something similar to this years ago. Maybe it was this one.
Mei is a touchy feely little shit isn’t he?? Lol I just love the banter between Mei and Yako.. Oh Yako… I have a soft spot for moody men haha! Also, I read Rasetsu first so I’ve kinda spoiled some of this story for myself. Oh well, it’s Chika Shiomi and I usually enjoy her series so I’m sure I’ll like this one!!!
I'm not feeling up to my current contemporary romance spree, I have no idea why, maybe a glut of too many of them in one go, so I've been diving into my piles of TBR manga this week. And this is the most current read, I'll be working my way back in reviews, before I completely forget (which is why I went on GR in the first place).
I read Rasetsu, the sequel series before this and quite liked it, having bounced off previous Chika Shiomi series in scanlation (and bought books). I think I'll get the rest of the series (Nr. 2 is already on my TBR and will be read next).
The series starts as a mix of high school comedy/possible romance with overbearing heroes (2) and well-meaning, rather colourless heroine (1) who is overshadowed by the guardian spirit who takes over her body when she's endangered by wanting to help spirits move on to the next world.
Having read the sequel series I do know whom she'll end up with and can't quite see it right now. I do recognise the way that Shiomi-sensei already has dark pasts rear their ugly head among the uplifting/dramatic help-the-ghost shenanigans and school comedy.
I can see why her editor (and fans) demanded a follow-up for Yakou -- he's much more interesting than Meiwa, the Designated Love Interest, and in fact based on this volume I would have predicted he was the one who'd end up with the girl. Sadly, he is also more interesting than the girl, if not than the spirit guardian who occasionally possesses the girl.
love love loved this series. Yako and Mei are hilarious! I love how they fight but still get along. (reminds me of people) *dodges bullets and books* in a good way!!
Yurara is adorable I really enjoyed her reactions to Yako and Mei.
If you like cutesy but funny and laugh out loud ridiculousness then this series is perfect for you.
Today's post is on Yurara, vol. 1 by Chika Shiomi. It is 200 page long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover has the three main characters on it looking at the reader. The intended reader is someone who likes ghost stories and other normal shojo tropes. There is no foul language, no sex, and very mild voilence in this book. The story is told from third person close of Yurara. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- There are two sides to every ghost story...
Review- An interesting and fun start series. Yurara has always been able to see ghosts and she wants to help them but they can very scary. On her first day of high school she meets two guys who can see and fight spirits. They are all about defending themselves and so Yurara's compassion for the trapped spirits is a little odd to them. This volume is about setting up the world and getting to know the characters but not much character growth happens. But that is OK as it is the first volume and I enjoyed my time with these characters and getting to see their world.
I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.
Ekspektasiku ketinggian kayaknya, jadi pas baca sampai abis kesanku biasa aja. Premisnya dah menarik sebenernya, eksekusi tiap Yurara ngusir roh itu, berasa...hah gitu doang? Well, kurasa penyelesaian masalah untuk selesai tiap bab selalu kesandung sama jatah halaman sih.Kupantau dulu di seri selanjutnya. Dari segi terjemahan, biarpun bahasanya sehari-hari banget tapi enak dibaca sih.
Yurara is Yu-Gi-Oh! in that a young kid changes into this older, powerful spirit when in trouble. I liked that this was a ghost hunter manga, but I found the interactions with the two male characters boring. I'm not the target audience for it, but I think I would have liked this more when I was younger.
This is a romance story with a difference; all three principal characters (one girl and two guys) can sense the presence of spirits. One of the guys is an ass (in my opinion); the other is nearly invisible. There are four more volumes to plow through. Hopefully, it will feel less like plowing before the end.
I already love this series and plan to sit down and read all of the rest of them this weekend I haven't seen any other manga do a spiritual possession quiet like this one
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Not the worst book but defiently a 3.5. The story was interesting however I felt bad for the boys since there feelings got conflicted due to someone else living in Yurara's body.
I finally finished reading this entire series, last night, after buying and storing it in my bookshelf for...4 years. I'm saying this to illustrate that I'm older and more 'mature' than the first time I read this and my feelings have changed a bit. I'm reviewing all 5 books in this review. --------------------------------------------------------------------
The heroine is Yurara, a girl who has a lot of spiritual power and can see ghosts, but requires a guardian spirit to keep her safe. She's kinda normal, doppy, cute and whatevs, really. She ends up sitting next to 2 very attractive guys, Mei and Yako, who can also see ghosts, but can defend themselves against them. They both take an interest toward Yurara, especially when a ghost puts Yurara's life in danger and the guardian spirit Yurara comes out to save the world. This Yurara is a badass. She's hot, a bit violent, and is really this ancient ancestral ghost who protects weakling Yurara. Then comes the confusing love triangle (square, actually). Mei, the flirt, likes doppy Yurara and pursues her first, while Yako ends up liking badass Yurara and gets jealous and protective toward her. Emotional drama ensues (for multiple volumes) until we all realize that Yako and badass Yurara guardian spirit love each other.
The sad thing is, this book is centered around doppy Yurara, and I could care less about her. Mei looked hot, every now and then, but his personality (or stupidity) made me want to punch him. Yako was a hottie, but he was pretty selfish too, so he ain't perfect. But really, I ended up being a die-hard fan of badass Yurara and was disappointed to find that this wasn't her story. Good thing is that there is Rasetsu, Volume 1, which centers around Yako and badass Yurara. They make are really awesome couple.
Art-wise, I liked and disliked it. There are many attractive panels, but there are some angles that Ms. Shiomi fails at. It makes the characters less attractive so I can't really recommend it for the art.
Overall, its a great started read into shoujo manga. The premise should attract the younger audience and there are no inappropriate innuendos that could possibly corrupt their mind.
This manga was SO different than anything I had read before. It had ghosts, LOVE, and some messed up guardian spirit. Which I LOVED! It had many things I liked PLUS the art was pretty good. =D
Yurara herself is a very timid girl and tries not to be noticed and has been seeing ghosts all her life, and when a spirit has a deep emotion, she feels it too. She also faces normal teen girl things like a popular girl that wants to do nothing but bully her WHOM doesn't know she'll need Yurara in the close future.
On top of that add a ghost and things get interesting pretty soon. And in come in the hot guys, Mei Tendo and Yako Hoshino!AH SWOON! Really their so different from each other & each love one side of Yurara. Oh yeah she has a guardian spirit that is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE from her, even physically.
Yako falls for Rasetsu, the guradian spirit while Mei falls for Yurara. The funny thing is that both guys are like BEST FRIENDS, so complication PLUS Rasetsu does NOT make it easier, she has feelings for Yako and he gets messed up because the body belongs to Yurara XD.
The school is FULL of spirits and they find themselves trying to get rid of them and only Rasetsu can do that. On top of everything their are TONS of funny moments and drawings! ^__^
That last chapter was SO intense. It's only Yako & Rasetsu and things get UGLY. Yako has to overcome a fear and realizes he DOES feel something like love toward Rasetsu and AH! >__< Things look like their getting complicated.
Overall I really enjoyed this manga. It was SUPER funny, filled with action, and has a really complex and interesting romance and MC. I will be picking up the next volume definitely! So 4.5/5 STARS!!!
Don't get me wrong. I LIKED IT! I just think that there needs to be more chapters before I get a real feel for the series. I find it interesting that her spirit is what the guys are falling for, not herself. This, I hope, will be handled well enough to show which character truly falls for Yurara along the way of hunting down ghosts, and who only likes her spirit because she's "hot."
Concerning the art, I actually like it a lot. It does have those cliche looks that are prevalent among shoujo, but the mangaka certainly can draw. I don't understand why others are stating that her drawings look strange. Really, compared to this:
Or this:
the mangaka stands out with her art:
There's nothing wrong with other shoujo, but it does grate on me when the hands are drawn so...frighteningly wrong looking. Not that I could do any better, but you get my point. This mangaka does exceptionally well with drawing hands.
Yurara is your average student except she's hiding a big secret - she can see ghosts! She can sense and even feel their emotions when she comes into contact with them. Unfortunately, it's a secret for a reason and she's desperate to keep it that way until she meets Mei and Yako, two guys who not only see ghosts but can also fight them off. Just as they start to help Yurara learn their way of life, the odd trio meet a ghost that not even Mei or Yao can defeat. Is all lost? Or can Yurara pull this off with a little help from the powers within?
This is what I would call a higher stakes / high pace fantasy manga and I did enjoy it. I love a good ghost story and the art style was more adult than a Shojo cutesy manga. I will say that I was heavily reminded of Fruits Basket with Yurara as Tohru, Mei as Shigure, Yako as Yuki and Yurara's inner guardian as Tohru's best friend, Arisa. That might be a genre thing or it might be a me thing - either way, I did enjoy this story. I'm not itching to continue right now but will definitely pick it up if (when) I hit a reading slump. Three out of five stars!
