Hans Hellmut Kirst, der international erfolgreichste deutsche Autor der Nachkriegszeit, wurde am 5. Dezember 1914 in Osterode in Ostpreußen als Sohn eines Gendarmeriebeamten geboren. Von 1933 bis 1945 diente Kirst als Berufssoldat. Mit seiner später verfilmten Romantrilogie „08/15“, seinen Welterfolgen „Fabrik der Offiziere“ und „Die Nacht der Generäle“ fand Hans Hellmut Kirst auch literarisch große Anerkennung.

H H Kirst is an extra ordinary writer. I would rank him in the league of Joseph Heller / Georges Simenon.
I do not know of any other author from Germany, who wrote his books with the second world war as the backdrop. His "Gunner Asche" series and the famous "Night of the Generals" are outstanding books. A lot of black humour, examination of the human condition and intrigue.
A Time For Payment is a later date book. It is on the Munich of 1970s. A crime thriller, with biting humour is only part of what one gets. The book goes in to the minds of the characters and does not pass any moral judgement. Remarkable observations on the world and its people.
You do not have to be an oldie to enjoy this book. Read it as a plain crime thriller. The hero is
