Charles Ogden is the pen name used by a collection of authors at Star Farm Productions for the Edgar & Ellen book series for children and young adults. The pen name is credited with nine books (with a tenth upcoming), published by both Tricycle Press, and more recently, Simon & Schuster.

I was sure I'd love this book. The macabre theme, story, and artwork really drew me in. However, the story was chaotic in a way that was supposed to be humorous but ended up lacking any sort of purpose or reason. Stuff happened, a lot of weird stuff happened, but when weird stuff happens just to be quirky it never interests me. I very much get the sense that the author added stuff in just because they thought it was funny rather than for any real purpose that served the world they built or Edgar & Ellen. Additionally, the characters were zany but so one-dimensional. There were no redeeming—or interesting—qualities about Edgar or Ellen, and if I'm not interested in the main characters then why am I reading the book?

Siapa pun yang telah mengikuti kisah ini sejak awal pasti mengenal Pet, binatang berambut dan bermata satu berwarna kuning yang selalu menjadi korban kejahilan Edgar dan Ellen di saat mereka tak punya mainan baru ataupun saat dilanda kebosanan. Mereka seakan tak pernah peduli akan rasa sakit yang mungkin saja dialami oleh Pet. Lihat saja ketika mereka menjadikan Pet sebagai pengganti Shuttle Cock.

Sial bagi Pet, tak peduli di manapun ia bersembunyi, Edgar dan Ellen dengan mudah menemukan tempat persembunyiannya. Mereka seakan memiliki sensor yang dapat mendeteksi keberadaan makhluk malang itu. Bahkan dengan mudah mereka merasakan perbedaan yang belakangan terjadi pada Pet. Tidak hanya terlihat lebih lincah dalam setiap usahanya untuk kabur, bahkan pernah sekali mereka memergoki Pet yang menyelinap ke dalam Laboratorium. Pertanyaan Edgar dan Ellen pun terjawab dengan mudah, ketika tahu bahwa balsemlah yang selama ini memberi kekuatan baru bagi Pet kesayangan mereka. Sayangnya ada satu rahasia lagi yang tidak mereka ketahui.

Bosan dengan Pet yang mulai bertingkah, Edgar dan Ellen mengalihkan perhatian mereka pada bangunan baru yang tidak jauh dari rumah mereka. Hotel Knightlorion begitu gedung yang arsitekturnya mirip dengan rumah bobrok mereka. pembagian tugas pun dimulai. Edgar dengan menyamar sebagai karyawan hotel mengangkut kopor – kopor berisi tikus –tikus menjijikan untuk disebar di seluruh ruangan. Ellen sendiri mengendap – ngendap menuju tempat penyimpanan makanan. Ia bermaksud menaikkan suhu ruangan tersebut agar semua makanan beku rusak. Namun tiba tiba saja sesuatu yang aneh terjadi pada Ellen. Alih- alih memutar tombol pengatur ruangan pada thermostat, ia malah meninggalkan ruangan penyimpanan makanan tanpa melakukan apapun. Bukan satu hal yang biasa bagi anak sejahil Ellen meninggalkan misinya begitu saja.

Di rumah, tingkah Ellen ternyata semakin aneh. Bukannya mengusir, Ellen malah menyambut baik ketika Judith Stainswort Knightleigh, istri sang walikota dan anak perempuannya Stephani, yang juga musuh besar Ellen, datang berkunjung. Bahkan dengan mudah ia menyetujui semua rencana Mrs. Knightleigh untuk merombak rumah mereka dalam acara Rumah Yang Lebih Bagi dari Milik Anda. Tentu saja hal itu membuat Edgar bahkan Stephanie menjadi sangat terkejut. Namun dengan cepat Edgar membuang semua pikiran buruk mengenai kakaknya. Ia berpikir bahwa ini hanyalah salah satu siasat Ellen untuk kejahatan berikutnya. Namun rasa optimisnya itu mulai berguguran satu demi satu ketika melihat sikap aneh Ellen lainnya.

Edgar mulai memergoki Ellen mulai membersihkan badan. Namun tidak ada yang membuat Edgar lebih shocked ketika tahu bahwa Ellen akan menghadiri pesta piama yang diadakan Stephanie di kediaman Knightleigh. Bahkan dengan mata kepalanya sendiri ia menyaksikan Ellen dengan asyiknya bermain bersama Stephanie dan teman – temannya. Padahal sebelumnya mereka berada dalam list orang – orang yang paling dibenci Ellen. Edgar benar – benar lemas dibuatnya. Kakak perempuan yang juga teman dalam melakukan semua kejahatannnya selama ini telah hilang bahkan kini berbalik menjadi musuh. Pengkianatan Ellen benar – benar keterlaluan.

Dari keempat seri Si Kembar Nakal, saya lebih suka menyebutnya Kembar Beracun, buku ini memberi sesuatu berbeda. Saya benar- benar menyukai perubahan yang terjadi ada diri Ellen. Bahkan perubahan pada alisnya yang selama ini runcing. Apalagi melihat Edgar yang menjadi nelangsa karenanya. Bukan hal yang sering terjadi dalam keidupan mereka. Walau semua itu tak berlangsung lama. Sedih rasanya melihat rencana untuk merombak rumah bobrok itu gagal.

Misteri demi Misteri dari buku sebelumnya juga mulai terungkap di buku ini. Namun tetap saja ada hal – hal yang masih belum bisa dipecahkan oleh kembar beracun ini.
Tak sabar rasanya membaca High Wire, kisah mereka berikutnya. Tentu saja dengan kenakalan – kenakalan baru.

For those living further a field, look in your own community, their may already be a similar program in place. And if not, you can always help start one.

Myself, I go out on the weekends and
shop thrift store and bulk book lots to rescue books and donate them. Sometimes I'll find a book I remember reading when I was young and will read it again before passing it on.

I don't rate these books using my normal scale, instead I give most of them three stars. This isn't a Criticism of the book, simply my way of rating them as good for children.

Aún siendo un libro para niños y luego de tantos años sigo amando a estos dos peculiares personajes.
Me encantaría que siguieran transmitiendo la serie y escribiendo sobre ellos. El autor creo dos personajes muy únicos y mi amor por Elen crece libro tras libro.
No puedo esperar a seguir con la saga y luego con la saga acompañante. Para tristeza mía han dejado de publicarlos y son difíciles de encontrar :(((

Twins Edgar and Ellen seem to be moving apart when Ellen starts acting unlike herself. She is taking baths, cleaning the house and being nice to their archrival next door. Pet, the one-eyed furball, is also acting up. Can Edgar get everything back to their abnormal normal state? Kids on thier own acting in a nicley done creepy way.

I know I said this in the review of the 3rd book, but I love how there is an ongoing plot thread running through the books. They're not just episodic. Speaking of things that are episodic, this book (while enjoyable) isn't my favorite solely because I much prefer the allied relationship between Pet and the siblings in the t.v. show to the antagonistic one they have in the books.

Pet is a one-eyed hairy thing that Edgar & Ellen torment as a means of "play". But Pet has been up & into to something in the lab..... All of a sudden Edgar is behaving oddly and Ellen wants Edgar to return to his old nasty self.....

Great story. The mayor succeeds in building his hotel next to Edgar & Ellen's well worn house. The mayor's wife has decided that the house must go. Pet has plans of his own. Ellen is transformed by Pet's tears into a Good person. Really weird. Can't wait fir the next installment.

Good, fast read. I enjoyed the shows when I was younger and decided to give the books a try when I found one at a used bookstore. What I love most about Edgar and Ellen is that, technically, they're the villians but it always turns out in their favor.

I read this during enrichment, thinking that they were more evil than that. But then as I was reading, who sings as a villain? So I think this is for kids younger than me (I'm 11).
