First off, the anime is based on the novel, not the other way round.

Secondly, I would have given the Chinese version 4 stars. 2 stars for the English, so I gave it an average of 3.

Trinity Blood contains quite a lot of politics. A lot may criticise that there's a lot of reference to religion but nobody seems particularly pious. Thank you. In my opinion, that's a +1 for the book. You see, TB isn't about priests religiously catching vampires or the likes. It's about people using the political power of the church to subdue the general public. Much like the dark ages. Then of course, you get religious fanatics in the novel (ie. Brother Petro) who obey everything the authorities say because they believe that it is the righteous thing to do. Behind all that is a not-too-realistic mumbo jumbo about how the people of earth once found a virus on Mars that somehow gave humans supernatural strength and speed but consumes the host when exposed to sunlight (hence the vampires).

I've read the Chinese version, and only glanced through the English. Point is, the novel was originally written in Japanese, which have an altogether different style of writing than English. I don't know Japanese, so I can't say much, but I know for one that there are things that can go forgiven in a Chinese book that will be considered as sloppy work in an English one and vice versa. All I can say about the English version is that they did the translation word-for-word. Japanese-to-Chinese translations usually retains more of the original meaning, and I can see enough emotions being expressed in the Chinese version to know that the Japanese one would have been superb. The author is fantastic, but the method of describing things in an Asian language simply don't work for English, so please don't judge the author harshly. All I can say is: blame the translator. Then again, the translators were only trying to satiate the demands of English fans. Better poor English than nothing, no?

In short? Read this only if you watched the anime and liked it. Otherwise you will not fully appreciate the complexity of TB.

Piece of poo. Non-existent characterizations, no atmosphere what-to-speak of, cardboard cut-out Evil Hur-Hur vampires, excessive spouting of Church-related Latin with no sense that anyone is remotely religious, though they may say they are from the Vatican and they say they are priests. I shouldn't be surprised of course, but still. Make me believe!

It's hard to even call this a novel. It's more like a collection of short stories/cases that loosely tie together in a vague story arc. Many of the same characters tromp on and off, but we are given so little personality that it doesn't really matter. Quirks and odd mannerisms do not a character make! And no, it doesn't get better when the robot arrives.

The world seems potentially interesting, but it is almost entirely ignored, except when a name or random location is thrown out. The people feel stupid. The people ARE stupid, good and bad. The pope is a stupid kid getting jerked around by his siblings. The AX agents are only super b/c they're secret monsters, and not because they're any good at investigations.

The only good (or bad, depending on your point of view) thing is that the violent gore scenes are really quite violent and gorey. So the author managed to express something properly, I suppose, if that was his aim. But then again, I was so utterly not caring about the story that I wasn't affected by any of it. Girl gets crotch-grabbed and threatened by perverted vampire? Whatever. Vampire gets head chopped so that it dangles upside-down by the skin? So what.

Save yourself the money and just borrow it from the library if you must.

VATICAN AESTHETICS NGHHH

But no worries.

Reread 8/29/24:
Rereading the beginning of this quartet. This Light Novel is actually four short stories that interconnect through the characters present and a loss overarching plot. The Light Novel takes place after Armageddon and humand now live along side vampires. The Vatican has power or influence over most human countries. While the vampires have there empire. These two powers are in a cold war with one another. While the novel includes vampires this is a science fiction story. This Light Novel includes the short stories Flight Night, Witch Hunt, From the Empire, and Sword Dancer. Trigger warning for body horror, violence, mentions of rape, and torture. This is an interesting start, but look forward to get more into the overarching plot.

First thing first, it must be know that this book isn't one story that has a beginning, middle, and end. Instead this is four short stories that are interconnected by the main character Able Nightrode and the main antagonist Rosenkreuz Orden. There are other characters that filter through the stories either as minor or main charcters, while there are also other characters that are one offs. So the best way to review this books is to review each story individually. This story overall is a futuristic tail that takes place post Armogadden. In this future the Vatican is the government body watching over most humans, then there the Empire which is the vampire kingdom.

Flight Night:4 stars
Able is returning from Albion aboard an airship when it is hi-jacked by a vampire. This is where we first meet Able and w get to see the lovable, clumsy, goofy priest, along side his Crusnik form. We also meet Cardnial Caterina and Cardnial Medici along ivy the brother the Pope. And we see the battle of wills between the two Cardnials and how the approach situation diffrently. And you see Jessica the stewardess turned emergency pilot. All around an action filled tail with touches of humor and sweetness.

Witch Hunt:4.5 stars
This is in part a continuation of Flight Night, in which Able and Tres, go to investigate the vampire tarorist group the took over the airship. When they find the groups headquarters they find most of the vampire members dead. That where they discover Eris a young girl who turn out to be a witch. This story has a darker tone. With all the death and darkness in Eris life and a flash of Able past. Along with cruel vampires actions, but the happy ending and hearwarming wrap up made for a good story.

From the Empire:5 stars
Able meets with a vampie that an agent of the Empire named Asthe, who looking for another vampire that a killer and traitor to the Empire. Able is her partner on the case. They end up capturing the vampire there looking for and in the process save the Pope and Cardnial Caterina. But the best part is seeing Able and Asthe bond form and the trust they gain in one another. Along with the Empires queen response to hearing about Able.

Sword Dancer:5 stars
This is the one story where Able isn't the main character in the short story, in reality he not even present in the story. The main character is Hugue who is a traveling priest who head to one of the Four City pack that controlled by vampires. Hugue got sent there after a mass murder of ten vatican staff there. I love Hugue because he can be driven and violent, but he has a soft side you see with the one surving nun. And plus the interplay with the vampires is intresting and captivating. Then there Hugue back story that drives all his actions. This is one of if not my favorite stories in both the book and anime adaptation.

All around a great first novel with a nice mix of characters, action, emotion, and humor. Highly recommend if your a fan of sci-fi and fantasy compined and light novels.

Vampires. Powerful, eternal, virtually indestructible, they are at the highest level of evolution. Aren't they awfully cocky, thinking like that? What if you knew there was something stronger, more powerful, older? What if you were that thing? Well, then you would be AX Special Agent Crusnik. Traveling in the guise of a simple poor priest, which he actually is, Agent Crusnik aids the Vatican in a constant, post-apocalyptic, political battle. Often throwing direct orders out the window, and taking his partners along for the ride, Crusnik battles his enemies to the bitter end. Until the next one appears. Exposing more plots and evils than he expunges, he and the other agents must continue to be a virtually unbeatable force. And that is quite a big shoe to fill.

Don't be put off by the religious references before you read this. This is literally post-apocalypse. Rome is one of the few major powers left, and the Vatican is not at all what you would expect.

Of all of the pop fiction that I've read, which isn't exactly a ton, but is a fair amount, this book comes the closest to anime. So, if you're a fan of anime, this is the book for you.

Amidst the non-stop action, Agent Crusnik is hilariously witty, a little bit bitter, and still manages to remain concerned about everyone else. He's definitely someone I'd want on my side. Just not around all the time, what with the constant death, destruction, and mayhem.

I want more, please. Pleasantly, there are five more stories on the way, as well as DVDs!

Okay, if you're expecting Hemingway you're probably going to be disappointed. However, if you just want something with a lot of action, I think this book is a good time. It is what it is: a light novel based on an anime series. Rating it on those terms, I found it entertaining. I went into it already familiar with the world and characters, so I don't know if it would be confusing to readers new to Trinity Blood. I didn't expect realism, so I wasn't disappointed at its absence. This book was humorous at times, bloody as hell and fast-paced. I enjoyed it on those merits. It is a little light on plot and characterization, but like I said I didn't expect a literary masterpiece. It's a fun, quick set of stories with really pretty art.

Either poorly written, poorly translated, or both. The writing is super cursory, and while that makes the pacing fast, it comes off as super convenient and rushed. But much detail is spent on the gory violence, so by contrast it comes off as gratuitous and said for easy shock value. Comes off as a teen writing what they think is cool, but it’s kinda stupid, and cliché at best.

Lots of typos, and there’s some weird sentences like “The gangly, goofy priest was now acting like a sleek, sexy shark.” and “Caterina yelled under her breath.”

This translation clearly has issues, but I'd heard about it already. I recently re-watched the anime and was hoping by reading the novels I'd get a bit better understanding of the characters and story but the novel is nearly as sparse in world building as the anime. So far, it follows the anime - or rather the anime follows the story - with little differences that are not worth noting.

It's interesting I guess... But scary!!! I'm prolly gonna get nightmares from this.... Gory, but the main character has a personality reminiscent of Rurouni Kenshin... Very disturbing though. I don't really like the bits about the Vatican, since it's kind of twisted... I don't know... I don't really know what I'm writing because I'm woozy from the medicine I just took.... I can't see straight... Uh oh... Did the doctor give me the right prescription? This isn't good.... What am I saying... Urgh.... Please disregard this review as the ranting of a drug-addled mind in response to the shock of all this blood.... Blood is bad for you... I read it gives you diarrhea (did I spell that right?) I think I'll try to use up all 10,000 characters I'm allowed to have... Let's see, what to talk about.... Hey, this is cool... Everything's a different color... It's all green and yellow.... Cool..... I wonder if anyone will actually take the time to read this review... They must think I'm an idiot.... Maybe I am... When I read this over, it sounds like something Osaka from Azumanga Daioh would write... Hey, my fingers are getting heavy.... More side effects??? I reallly hope my doctor gave me the right prescription.... My body's all sluggish... But my mind is like zipping around... How strange... Hey, stuff's not blurry anymore... It's really clear now... OMG, my neck just cracked... Oww.... 8563 characters to go.... I'm getting tired.... Sushi is good... I ate some today... Oh yay I don't have to do the dishes today because I mowed the lawn... OMG a fly... Wait that's a moth, not a fly... But it looks green so it looks like a fly.... I'm running out of things to say... I like quotes.... Check out my quotes for a lot of random people... Whoa, I almost hit the computer with my head... I spaced out for a second, and started falling forward.... I'm so sad, my Creative ZEN V broke.... Now I have to buy a new one.... 8016 characters remaining.... I've run out of things to say.... Bye bye... I'm gonna go take a shower...... How did this review get so long.....

I have only begun with this and already have some problems with it (written anime? Ouch!! Also a bad translation, thanks for taking us fans oh so seriously Tokyopop. You are not endearing yourselves as a publisher, not at all. There are things that are absolutely in the area of definite no-gos and publishing a half-hearted translation is definitely one of them.) But I have always been interested in the story of Trinity Blood and the setting and topics are spot on my territory, so much that I should love it to pieces. I don't. Not yet, but I am not too far into the book yet, so we'll see. I'll definitely finish at least this one volume - no matter how bad it might become - because the setting is intriguing, very much so.

...

I love a lot of the ideas I've read about in this book and some characters seem intriguing, but... I cannot finish this. There are too many scenes where I just want to bang my head against the next hard surface and the interest in the universe of Trinity Blood (ah, the 'races' and creatures, the Vatikan, the institutions, assassins and whatnot...), the interest is just not strong enough for me to get over the very manga-like expressions and unrealistic behaviour. I could not keep my promise: ABANDONED.

Reseña completa en mi blog:
http://drdeadwish.blogspot.com.ar/201...

I bought all 3 books that were released in this series from a bargain bin, thinking "Well these look interesting. Why not?" I have several reasons to not I would have given myself.
The story is bland.
The characters are flat and uninteresting.
The story jumps from one "story line" to the next with no real connection between them. Yes, I get that it was intentional, but it made me not care about the stories or characters since only 2 really appear throughout each one.
The writing is just awful. Maybe it's the translation, but it can't be blamed squarely on the translators. The author has to answer for something here.

This is definitely a Light Novel in the truest sense in the fact that it's not well written, has absolutely no depth and the stories are hardly connected at all. Pure blood and guts fan service.
If you want to read a GOOD light novel series, try The Good Witch of the West, Missing, or Full Metal Panic. All three are excellent works in the medium. Good luck tracking them down though, since they're all out of print.

The translation is very poor it suffers from it but it is also fun for a political vampire book.
I wouldn't pick this book up expecting excellent writing and if you didn't enjoy the anime then you wont enjoy this book. It does go into a lot more detail in the workings of the world but sadly we were cursed with one of the worst translations that makes the book seem boring and flat.
if you like pretty pictures they have them if you like gore its here if politics are your thing with vampires then here's the book which is pretty cheap on amazon right now.(and no they will not be translating the rest of the series so the five or six books we got out of the whole series that's it because the company went under I wonder why)
just like how the creator died before finishing it and had to ask a friend to finish it we wont get it either

I bought four of these Trinity Blood novels, two of the RAM and two of the ROM. I'm a huge Trinity Blood fan and that's why I kept buying them, but I'm not going to anymore because I'm so disappointed with them. The writing is just so bland and terrible. I'm not sure if that's just because of really bad translation, since I came across a lot of obvious and unsightly grammatical/spelling mistakes throughout every book. It felt like there wasn't any thought put into the translations at all, to even check for spelling mistakes much less the overall flow of the story. At any rate I can't say that these are worth reading.
The manga is amazing, but not these novels. Maybe I'll think about continuing on with the later volumes, at the point where the manga and anime didn't cover yet.

Trinity Blood is a very interesting read, the art work in this series is great also. I like the the way the story unfolds, okay it can be a little confusing and seem inconsistent but if you continue reading it gradually makes sense.

One of the basic underlines of the story is that of a pilgrimage of sorts and along the way unexpected things happen and new characters are met as it would happen in life. I also like the way that these unexpected events help strengthen resolves and friendships.

Another one of the basic story underlines is of atonement and seeking forgiveness but like I said you have to keep reading and maybe re-read some parts to understand. but it is worth it.

If you’ve ever enjoyed a good manga for the story instead of the illustrations, these series is for you. Sunao has an amazing ability of making the story come alive out of the page, his descriptions trump any illustrations of a battle scene and more importantly he treats the reader with enough respect so as to make his stories be science fiction as opposed to fantasy. It was an absolute delight to read, even if you haven’t seen the anime or read the manga, or were not even aware this was ever anything more than a great science fiction series.

FANTASTIC! The world of Trinity Blood is phenomenal. Set in a post apocalyptic society, the Vatican is a world superpower. I don't know how to describe how incredible this series is; you HAVE to read it for yourself! I love the characters, the story, the idea of such a world. I wish I could be an AX agent.
Literally the very first sentence of the very first book, you are THROWN into the action! Its VERY easy to get absorbed into these books. You will not be able to put them down and sleep in peace. YOU HAVE TO READ THESE BOOKS!

So far the Trinity Blood novels are more detailed than the manga, and A LOT more detailed than the anime. This is both good and bad. It's good because these stories that I already know and love are so much more intricate than I imagined! There are so many small details that you just can't portray in a visual medium. But it's bad because many of those details are quite gruesome. Even though I'm reading instead of watching I feel like there is more gore, and the bad guys are more evil and sick. DEFINITELY would not recommend this to someone under 18.

My understanding is that the anime is based on the novels, and not the other way around as some people have written. However, it doesn't really matter that much. I enjoyed the books for what they were, light reading associated with an anime series that I enjoyed. the translation may be partly to blame for the textual problems. However, I found my self wishing there were more books available when I was done with the last book in the series.

Okay this first novel was amazing as expected it gives you the details the anime had to leave out as most do. The story great, characters even better really a good novel to get into if your a fan of vampires, not the kind that sparkle in the light lol. It has horror, comedy and mystery put in good taste. I do however recommend this for adults only due to some very graphic situations. But it's got my seal of approval!

The characterisation was a little odd again at times in this novel but the new stories more than made up for it. Plus we are now getting tantalising hints as to why Abel is on the Terran's side.

All in all, I can't wait to read volume 2!

Loved the details I found in this version, much better then the manga or anime, even if you don't get to see Thors beautiful artwork as much, would recommend that you read this series and the "Reborn On Mars" series too before reading or watching the Trinity Blood manga.

This is what the anime is based on except this book is slightly different. They made the anime so teen friendly, whereas the book is more adult. Very good novel.
