Lisa Bevere is a Christian author of the books Lioness Arising, Nurture, Fight Like a Girl, Kissed the Girls and Made Them Cry, Out of Control and Loving It! Be Angry but Don't Blow It! The True Measure of a Woman, and You Are Not What You Weigh. In addition to speaking at national and international conferences, she is a frequent guest on Christian television and radio shows. Lisa is also the cohost of the weekly television program The Messenger, which broadcasts to 214 nations. She and her husband, John Bevere, also a best-selling author, make their home in Colorado with their four sons Addison, Austin, Alec, and Arden.
Lisa Bevere's ,Lioness Arising, is a "now" word for women. I not only read Lioness Arising, I viewed the videos and taught the series to a women's study group. As each of us took the time to read the chapters our lives gained strength and encouragement from the prowess of lioness.
Lisa's analogies were mind-provoking and challenging. As women we found our voice, our whispers turned into roars against the injustices of abuse and sex trafficking. Lioness Arising sounded the alarm for us to arise, wake up and make a difference! Not to just "be” but to 'do"! It compelled us to become answers, not problems.
As lionesses in a pride, women are to greet and groom each other, grow and share with each other, express value for each other. When we unite to protect, we create a fiercely shielded arena. From this fortress of strength, we can effectively strategize the hunt, take on the wild chase and eliminate any prey. "We cannot help our world if we close our eyes and ears and hide from the pain that is around us." We are to live in the light and hunt in the dark, let the older lions roar and the younger ones ambush!
This book started out great, then it turned out too much for me, as in too much of Lisa Bevere and not enough God. I don't have a problem with using The Message as for reading, but to use it only so you may make your point in the book more clearly to the reader is like "dumbing down, and it didn't fit KJV. She asks repeatedly how the reader likes what she dreamed about. I didn't like that she took the writing on after a friend/evangelist/speaker of hers told her she wasn't quite ready for this change. She took offense to it and her husband just wrote a book on offense that I just got through with, so I didn't like that she took that criticism as a jumping off place to launch her dream into a whole study, which makes you want to sing at the top of your lungs, "I Am Woman Hear Me Roar" but yet, they try to convince you this is different from women's lib? Right. When I started to have strange feeling about it I read up on many reviews and I just couldn't escape the eerie feeling every time I picked up this book of "her" dream. It was the same feeling I had about a Mormon tape I was given by my boss to "just listen to." Some things are better left undone. I apologize to those who are running around roaring and meeting at their lion dens, I won't be reading any more of her books. If her gathering of powerful Christian women is to be, it will be and I will be the sorry tail-tucked-under dog, crawling to reach the scraps. I know I wasn't alone.
In Lioness Arising, author and "Motivational" speaker Lisa Bevere uses the lioness as a metaphoric symbol for women, in challenging them to discover their passion and purpose as she has done - by rising up and taking hold of the power God has given them, and by waking up and changing their world.
The author offers Lioness Arising as a vehicle to empower women to realize their strength, courage, and direction with a significant amount of biblical verses interwoven throughout her motivational message.
I find Lioness Arising to be a testimony to the author's own ability to wake up and change her world. To finally escape from behind her husband's shadow. After all, she states that she wanted to recover some of the strength she'd forfeited while trying to fit in as the pastor's nice Christian wife. She was tired of being thought of as weak and whiny. And like so many, she was looking for her own identity from her spouse and children, and perhaps seeking some self-worth and validation. She finally managed to wake up...
To discover in an intense dream or out of body experience of a lioness - a vision and message sent by God. To become, a motivational speaker to women. She goes on to share that she was only a stay-at-home mom with a dysfunctional past..and now here was God telling her she was destined for more.
The author appears by her own admission to have been a timid individual who finally found her voice and wants the world to hear what she has to say. " I was terrified by almost everything outside my control and intimidated by the majority of people I met. I found strong, dominant women especially frightening." Apparently, she morph into a lioness with the strength to motivate.
Although I think she attempts to do so, and I may have missed the section where Bevere actually explains the nature of achievement - I find that she merely shares her lioness dream, accomplishments, travels and gives women encouragement to ban together and do the same. And that in itself is not a bad achievement, for a once timid and frighten woman.
My overall opinion of motivational books is: Most motivational books are selling something, a theory, an experience or an idea…that is usually geared toward the reader overcoming some obstacle or becoming wealthy by merely using the methods outlined in the book. And as with a good number of motivational books, the author has had some personal experience that prompts them to share it with others, so that they too can experience a breakthrough in their lives. In other cases the author has realized peddling motivation is merely a great way to turn a profit. And sadly, you may not learn the secret to success or happiness, but you WILL learn a lot about manipulation and influence; which is the bases for too many motivational books. In the case of Lioness Arising, the author has shared several of her fears and experiences, but I also think the author is earnestly making an effort to motivate women.
Maybe Lisa's book may not be the one to unlock your life's mystery, but if you look hard enough and want it bad enough, there is some book or something out there, that will. Did Emerson not say, "We become what we think about all day long." That said, if you continue to listen and think about motivational messages, like those shared in this book, you will at some point become motivated, therefore, the author has accomplished their goal.
I also find that most motivational books tend to be uplifting only for a brief fleeing moment - then they fall short of what they claim to offer and fizzle from memory.
Recommendation: I have no problem recommending this book, to women especially to those with low self-esteem issues who are seeking some reassurance that they can find their inner strength and overcome someday. Because if you try, you can actually "change your (place in the) world."
“I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review - However, the opinions are mine."
Maybe I missed something because Lisa Bevere's books have great ratings but for me personally, there was too much about lions and elevating humankind and not quite enough about the Lion (Jesus) and elevating Him. I was not fond of her using the Message paraphrase almost exclusively too (and I'm not a KJV only person). Just my opinion. . .
Christian women are called to be like lionesses. They are to live life with power and grace as they follow Jesus, the Lion of Judah. They are to unite together with the men and women in their lives to combat evil in their midst. They are called to protect the vulnerable. This is a powerful book with lots of wise insights.
Wow this was just what I needed! At times she would give these vast generalizations / comments, but needed more substance to it or describe it better or how to apply it to our lives. Otherwise it was very powerful, inspiring, and empowering! I might just read it again all the way through immediately. My favorite chapters were Lionesses live in the light and hunt in the dark, lionesses are strategic, dangerously awake, awaken a lioness, and I think a force unseen.
Will definitely come back to if I don’t straight read it again lol. Beautifully provides words behind what I feel God is speaking to me for this year 2023: the year of wild (:
I am trying to read a wide variety of authors from different theological backgrounds than myself. I had heard ladies rave about this book for a few years. Lisa Bevere was inspiring at a conference I heard her as a motivational speaker so I had high hopes that I would love this book.
The lower star rating is not because I disagree with a few of her theological approaches in the book. I leave space for differences of interpretation. I just felt that the dream and lioness analogy could have been summed up in fewer words that would have inspired me.
I think I would enjoy hearing her do a 30 minute sermon or testimony, but I lost interest reading about a lioness for 200 plus pages.
This book speaks to the depth of the soul of a woman. Women of every age and every demographic can glean wisdom, encouragement and a whole new perspective on our world, our gender and our dreams. A must-read for sure!
This is certainly not one of the best books I have read from this author. This book focuses on Christian women with regards to, women empowerment, serving God and pursuing your calling, how to work together as women and how God intends for us to work together with men and not see them as enemies.
All these topics are really good and essential, but I felt there was not anything new I did not know of brought up in the book. Also, do not get me wrong, I am all about women empowerment etc. but, the constantly recurring words of affirmation just were not for me, again this probably has more to do with my personality and my current season in life... There definitely was a time I needed to hear them but now was not and it could be because I now firmly know my identity in Christ.
Also, throughout the book, the author uses a lioness as a figurative example for women, but I am not that much invested in lionesses to an extent of being willing and patient in reading so much about them , so that did throw me off a bit.
Overall, the book is good for women in seasons of not knowing what God created you to do/to be, if, for some reason you believe that Jesus looked down on women and for people with identity crisis. I do love how the author explained how women empowerment points back to Jesus.
i got to hear lisa bevere speak at a conference a few months back & LOVED her message from this content BUT this book was kinda a let down following that. i didn’t love it nearly as much as i wanted/thought i would:( she had a few wonderful quotes and points that greatly resonated with me, but i felt it could have been said in one chapter instead of being dragged out into a book over 200 pages in length. her thoughts on the importance of both male & female in God’s creation & the way in which they were designed to work together was absolutely fantastic & definitely are things this world, and even myself, needed to be reminded of. overall, i would say listen to lisa speak on this topic instead of read the book because it is some GOOD stuff, it in book form was just a drag.
Didn't finish. Lisa Bevere is incredible and fiery to listen to in person. But reading her, she never lowers her intensity level, so it's hard for me to stay with her.
This is an interesting, encouraging and an eye opening book.I am very privilege to read a book as such.....Women wear many caps and has been succumbed by society to a certain standard.I appreciate this book been written to women to arise and not sit and cry but to realize theie lioness calling after their king. She talks about how women are empowered to raise productivity and they multiply and bring Goodness.
In the beginning chapters , i was provoked and charged, value of a strong woman and that God has placed us here for reasons. We should rise to the standard that God has placed us. If for a reason one can not find their place in the church, the rest of the world is out there waiting for your manifestation.
The middle chapters were dull for me , I enjoy some of the illustration and enlightment but am glad for the ending chapters. This book is not a how to book but a book that is meant to stir up that inner strength that has been given to us as a woman. Through prayer one can answer the call and rise above limitations.
If you think your gender is a barrier for you in fulfilling your destiny, I definitely recommend this book. You will be greatly charged.
In “Lioness Arising” Lisa Bevere urges her fellow women to Rise up and recognize their position as a Lioness. This book captivated me so much and I simply could not put it down! This powerful message came in a timely season of my life resulting with a stirring in my heart to awaken and respond. This title is based on Numbers 23:24 – “These people rise up like a lioness; like a majestic lion they stand.”
Truly, this has been the most powerful book that I have read in a long while. This is the call to rise up like a lioness – combine ease with strength and rest with power and a fierceness combined with gentleness – this is a message like I have never heard before. Lisa writes, “God did not save you to tame you!” We are called for more than this! It is time for the women to awaken and to rise up! This inspirational book is a call to awaken “to a life of fierce passion”, to “wake up and change your world!” I highly recommend that every woman read this! Old or young, there is no mistaking the need for today’s women to take a join voices for the Pride! This book will change your life!
I had never read or heard of Lisa Bevere before receiving this book, I was completely intrigued by the book topic and the title of the book. I also love reading material from "new to me' authors.
I must admit, I at first had a hard time getting interested in the book as it was a little bit much for me to comprehend, but by Chapter 3 things began to get a much easier and I was very much stunned by the book. Lisa compares woman to a Lion, strong and fierce, not afraid to take on the world. The book, Lioness Arising, is about being a strong woman and taking your role as "wife and mother" to new levels. Lisa shows how a woman can use her God given roles to make changes within her own community and in the world. I have always been one who wants to care for others and make changes, but this book inspired me to do more and give more. Lioness Arising is about taking our strengths and making us stronger.
I highly recommend this book for women who want to make changes, not just in your own, but in the community and the world around you. You will love this books just as much as I did.
This book was sent to me as a gift because of a life situation we are dealing with. It could not have been more perfect. "God did not save you to tame you...There has never been a more critical time for us to be healthy women who live the Word of God...We must establish a wise and thoughtful view of issues such as gender, submission, and unconditional obedience...God never meant any of these principles to put others at risk. They were meant for health and good. It is our responsibility to protect the young and vulnerable. Like the lioness, we should always seek to move children out of harm's way. Lionesses understand by God-given instinct what some women have forgotten: mothers rescue even if the child is not their own." GOOD STUFF. I too have felt something stir inside of me, and I cannot and will not remain quiet. This is an age of apathy, cleverly disguised as love an acceptance, and so many are afraid to stand up for what is right for fear of being labeled. This book was inspirational!!
It was good. It's motivating and inspirational and I can see why so many of the people that raved about it...raved about it. IMHO I think you have to be in a specific mind-set, at a specific time to really "get" what the reader intends to communicate to the reader.
Currently, I'm thirsting for knowledge and inspiration in the area of parenting, er goes...maybe I didn't get as much out of it, as say, someone you is looking to expand their efforts in a ministry setting, or even just become involved more actively is a social justice setting, or...coming to awareness of God given inner strength.
Long story longer...I can see how at another time of my life this book would have got me all fired up (in a good way). Happy reading.

Review: “Lioness Arising” is a spiritual excursion of the greatest kind. Women will learn to find the lioness inside themselves, to tap into the strength most never realize they have and see their worth in a new light. Lisa Bevere has written a book that highlights both the grace and goodness of God and the natural order of nature. This novel is one that all spiritual women will enjoy and find true worth in reading. I highly recommend this book to any woman who longs to find her inner lioness.
Sorry! But I didn't really like this one... Love John Bevere's books, and this was recommended to me.
I'm not a mom. I'm a 35-year old business woman who probably won't ever be a mom. I've found that I enjoy books written by men. Maybe I have a more masculine outlook on life, but there's something about men's writing style, attitude, and examples they reference that hit home more for me.
To me, this was too ... "girly". A lot about motherhood, protecting your children, getting together for "girl time". Just didn't move me.
YES there are great scriptural references! (I'm not as cold-hearted as all that!)
I loved this book. It was given to me by my sister-in-law because I asked for advice on devotionals. This book paints a beautiful picture of how women should see themselves as a powerful lioness and accept our Jesus as the Lion. She relates each quality of the lioness to what we can be doing as women in leadership roles for all those around us and quotes scripture to back it up. If this doesn't spark your desire to be and do more as a daughter of God I'm not sure what will. I love seeing myself as a lioness!
This was a capstone book for a Christian women's leadership curriculum that I completed in 2016. I didn't read the book then and, reading it now, I just feel that the author could have made her point in something the length of a blog post. There was just absolutely no need to use up 200+ pages on this topic. Bottom line ... women can be powerful particularly when they align their gifts and talents with one another.
Perhaps it is just that the information on the back of the book was misleading, or that I misread the title, but this book did not meet my expectations for it. It was well thought out and well written but focused primarily on ending human trafficking for women throughout the world, whereas I anticipated more of a self-help type book on waking up to the truth of our identity in Christ and changing the world as a result.
Finished the audio version in a day and it was amazing! So powerful and will definitely want to listen to this again soon! I love how Lisa is just real and just tell the truth as it is.
Motivated to find the lioness in me!
Update 01 June 2016
Second time I finished this audio version and the truths are still powerful and motivating to draw near to God and found the lioness He created!
This book was phenomenal! It's a great outlook on relationships and femininity. After reading it I had a better understanding and new found respect for myself, my sisters and female friends but more importantly, for men.
I was so excited to start this book but to me it was kind of boring. Lisa Beverly goes on a lot about lions, the way they are, act, etc. and I just lost interest. It was inspirational nonetheless.
