It takes you from a simple means to gain access to the camera to complex video capture and sharing examples. It also covers sound, graphics, painting, and more―everything you need to make your app come "alive." After reading this book, the app you create will showcase the best of multimedia that Android has to offer.

So I think that in order to do a non-trivial project in some new language or platform, you have to cover 3 learning bases:

First off, you have to do a thorough "Introduction to XXXX" course or book.

You should read all the chapters, and do all of the exercises, and this before you even thinking about writing project code, you should just put your head down, and plough through it.

(I have repeatedly made the mistake of, giving up part-way through "introductory XXX books" because, I had learned a dangerously small amount to fudge my way to make something work.)

Secondly, you have to be really familiar with the official "reference" documentation. In this case, this is google's online references. Their docs are excellent.

Thirdly: you need domain specific information about the narrow area of your project. In this case, I am developing an app that needs fine control of the camera and formats and codecs. This book has lots of little gotchas, and tips that I really wish I knew 3 months ago!

So this book is a 5-star type 3 developers book. (Just...)

It p*sses me off, to see 1-start reviews like "I was looking to learn Android, and this book was too complicated... :-( terrible book etc". If you want to learn from scratch, then get a book called "learn XXXX from scratch"!!!
