Astrophysicist Halley Dunbar has spent her career peering into the space hoping to find the one-in-a-billion exoplanet outside our solar system capable of sustaining life. Such a find would be the climax of her scientific career and establish her as a force majeure in a male-dominated world. When her great-uncle dies, she travels to Lochaber in Scotland to arrange his funeral, reluctant to leave her research and her million-pound telescope behind in Hawaii. In Scotland, she encounters an assortment of characters who make her realise there’s more to life than searching for something that might not exist. The years are ticking by and Halley (35), starts to question the life she’s chosen. When the laird’s son, Tor Strachan, rocks up, he turns her world upside down and Halley discovers, not the new exoplanet she’s spent her academic life searching for, but the one-in-a-billion man who can make her happy. Forced to question her life choices, Halley wonders if she’ll be able to return to stargazing and leave behind a place and a man she’s come to love. However, Afghan veteran Tor has demons of his own to confront before he can be the man Halley deserves. And, as for Halley, she has secrets of her own; ones she can't share with anyone, including Tor.

Hi, I’m Lizzie and I like writing about the ‘moment’ when the hero and the heroine fall in love. That, and trying to track down the all-elusive hero-in-a-kilt, is what gets me in front of the computer each morning. Since 2012 I’ve published eight novels: Tall, Dark and Kilted, Boot Camp Bride, Scotch on the Rocks, Girl in the Castle, Take Me, I’m Yours and Harper’s Highland Fling, Dark Highland Skies and Winter Star in the Scottish Highlands. I'm curently writing #9 for [publication in 2026.
I organise the Leicester Chapter of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and present workshops on indie publishing to new writers. My feel good/uplit novels would happliy sit alongside Donna Ashcroft, Rachel Lucas and Ellie Henderson on your bookshelf.

I love writing because it gives me the chance to celebrate everything I love about my homeland - Scotland, and an opportunity to share those feelings with my readers. When not writing, I spend summer touring Scotland in our caravan researching my next novel and avoiding the midges.

Dark Highland Skies is a contemporary romance set in the Scottish highlands.

Astrophysicist Halley Dunbar has come to Lochaber to arrange the funeral for her Great Uncle Tam. As a teenager she spent many summers with her uncle in his salmon bothy, but she hasn’t been back for twenty years.

Hector (Tor) Strachan is struggling to come to terms with civilian life after the end of his army career. As the laird’s son he’s expected to perform his duties, but an injury from his time in the army and PTSD are taking their toll.

While Tor and Halley start off on the wrong foot, they find mutual friendship as together they organise Tam’s funeral, but will there ever be anything else between them other than friendship?

This book has a lovely setting and a wonderful cast of characters. There are several unusual careers which made me chuckle at times, while I quite fancied a few quiet nights away in the old salmon bothy or Tor’s Airstream myself. This is slow-build romance and I was in no rush to see it reach the end as I was quite enjoying my armchair travel to remote Scotland.

After a long absence, Halley is back at Lochaber in the Highlands, sad and feeling guilty that she didn’t spend more time with her great-uncle Tam when he was alive – she’s now there for his funeral, representing the family, and clearing out his home in the salmon bothy on the shores of Loch Morar. She really just wants it over and done with, so she can return to Hawaii and her career as an astrophysicist – her memories of Scotland were badly tainted by a traumatic incident before her departure. And she particularly hopes to avoid the laird and his family at Creag na h-lolaire (Eagle’s Crag) – only to find that Sir Monty is stricken with grief at the death of his friend and former batman, and is determined to take on the organisation (and cost) of a fitting funeral. The full extent of their relationship becomes evident, and Halley allows him to take precedence – but it brings her into far closer contact with the family than she’d hoped for.

There is one member of the family, their oldest son Hector (Tor) that she grows not to mind at all having closer contact with – after a rather inauspicious start when they encounter each other in the dark, and she batters him with a tree branch. His support becomes important to her – along with that of his scatty sister Lexie (and her husband who makes sporrans from roadkill – who knew!) and her renewed friendship with Rowan, now Mallaig’s undertaker. But there are other members of the family whose closeness is less welcome – Lady Strachan really doesn’t want anything to do with her, and the more distance she can keep between herself and the threatening presence of their other son Lysander the better.

I must say, I rather fell for Tor – not only because he looked like my kind of guy, but because of his infinite patience and gentleness too. The story is told from the perspectives of both Halley and Tor, which works particularly well to build sympathy for them both – and we find out more about the darkness in his past, the severe injuries he suffered in Afghanistan, and his continuing struggles with PTSD. Theirs is a love story, a slow burn one that I entirely believed in, and that really engaged me at an emotional level.

As well as the romance, the other element of this well written story that was superbly done was its Scottish and historical content. The setting is quite wonderfully drawn – the castle particularly vividly described, but also the wild countryside and dark skies that surround it – and some of the historical detail (the staircase – how fascinating!) was excellent too. And that converted airstream caravan where Tor lives – as an AirBnB aficionado, I knew exactly what it was based on with its dragonfly windows, and its inclusion only made me even keener to try for a booking (any chance of a visit from an attractive man in a kilt while I’m there, do you think?).

This was a romance that had everything I enjoy – and, in case I haven’t mentioned it, beautifully written too, with a totally perfect ending. Highly recommended by me!

I had missed Lizzie Lamb's novels so much!
We are back into bonnie Scotland with a very pleasant romantic story unfolding, between an independent, strong, yet romantic heroine ( her trademark feature) with a secret in her past and a tall, dark, kilted and decent hero ( who sometimes wears a uniform, too. A man in a kilt AND a uniform? Yes, please!).
We have a very strong sense of place, a fabulous set of secondary characters - no spoilers, but the other love story between the two older characters is so sweet and her usual witty, fresh, funny dialogues.
Most recommended.

Dark Highland Skies is one of those rare romances that feels both uplifting and deeply emotional, the kind of story that gently pulls you in and refuses to let go. I went in expecting a cozy Highland love story, but what I found was something far richer a heartfelt journey through grief, healing, and the quiet magic of finding where you truly belong.

Halley Dunbar is a wonderfully written heroine. Her passion for astrophysics and her search for distant, life-sustaining planets is a perfect metaphor for her own emotional distance from the world around her. Watching her step away from a life ruled by logic and ambition and slowly open herself to connection, community, and love was incredibly satisfying. Her secrets add depth and tension, and they make her feel real flawed, guarded, and human.

Tor Strachan is an unforgettable romantic lead. Strong, kind, and quietly broken, his struggles as an Afghan veteran are portrayed with sensitivity and respect. His inner battle adds emotional gravity to the story, and his journey toward healing is just as compelling as the romance itself. The relationship between Tor and Halley develops at a believable pace, full of tender moments, emotional honesty, and genuine chemistry that made me root for them every step of the way.

The Scottish Highlands setting is simply stunning. The wintry atmosphere, the sense of tradition, and the warmth of the local community contrast beautifully with the colder, more isolated life Halley leaves behind. The author’s writing is vivid and immersive, making it easy to picture the rugged landscapes, star-filled skies, and quiet moments that give this story its heart.

What truly sets this book apart is its emotional balance. It handles themes of loss, trauma, and hope with a gentle hand, never feeling overly dramatic but always sincere. By the end, I felt comforted, uplifted, and completely satisfied.

This is a perfect winter read romantic, thoughtful, and full of heart. I highly recommend Dark Highland Skies to anyone who loves emotionally rich romance with strong characters and a beautiful setting. I’m already eagerly looking forward to the sequel, Winter Star in the Scottish Highlands.

When Halley Dunbar returns to the Highlands of Scotland to say final farewells to her beloved uncle, memories, past prejudices, and strong emotions are reawakened. This, despite her determination to stay grounded in the present and focused on her future.
Yet the more she learns about war veteran Tor Strachan and the deep-rooted connection between their two families, the more she wonders if her career on a faraway continent might not be her destiny after all.
And then there’s that dark secret, the one that lies buried so deep in her heart she just knows she can never love again.
Beautifully written, with her trademark sparkling dialogue, a feisty yet lovable heroine and totally enchanting hero, Lizzie Lamb has woven a tantalising tale that evokes many emotions, I moved to tears at times, laughing out loud at others.
And what reader doesn't fall for her beloved Highlands? The landscape so vividly drawn it’s as captivating as her cast of enchanting and unforgettable characters. A totally wonderful read.
Highly recommended.

Great Scottish love story

Set in the Lochaber area of Scotland assured I would love this book before I started reading it. It had a mixture of feelings including love, loss, grief, regret, longing, desire, oh the list is long! Full of family dynamics, a past full of regret, shame and secrecy due to mistakes that were made had me feeling sorry that Halley has kept it almost all to herself for over 20 years causing her to stay away from Lochaber and the uncle she loved so much. Following his death she returns to the Highlands for his funeral and to sort out his belongings.
Initially almost seriously injuring Tor Strachan on their first encounter, Halley slowly falls in love with him but her secret past throws an obstacle in the way. This causes her to leave Scotland under very emotional circumstances for a list love that didn't get to truly develop. Months later on a holiday in Italy Halley and Tor meet again and rekindle their love for each other immediately. A very happy and touching ending made this romantic novel a pleasure to read.

Once again, we're transported to the author's beloved Highlands of Scotland. The chemistry between astrophysicist Halley Dunbar and veteran Tor Strachan, a soldier suffering from PTSD, sizzles.

Lizzie's descriptions of the locations make it easy to envision the scenery. The same holds true for her characters. We've probably all had a friend like Lexie or maybe even Rowan, the funeral director in Mallaig. And then there's Rowan's swearing parrot!

I found myself rooting for Halley and Tor, crying in places, laughing in others. I can't wait for Lizzie's next book!

A great read

Lizzie has done it again, I loved this book, takes the reader on a journey to the Highlands of Scotland.
Scientist Dr. Halley Dunbar got more than she bargained for when she travelled from her workplace in Hawaii to Lochaber in the Scottish highlands to arrange her beloved great uncle Tams funeral.
On returning she was reacquainted with old childhood friends and Tor Strachan.
Tor had demons from his the past military service which had to be overcome, and her own dark secret before allowing herself to fall in love.
A good story line and well written and researched.

I needed to read on…

The test of a good book is whether I need to read into the early hours to find out what happens and how the protagonists get there. This was such a book.
I really liked the characters and their motivations were realistic, not contrived. The setting is glorious and having recently visited that exact beach I recognised it, so I know the book is well-researched.
One of Lizzie Lamb’s best books so highly recommended.

Intrigue and passion in a beautiful setting

Lizzie Lamb has done it again in great style. Dark Highland Skies has it all, with heroes and villains in plentiful supply. The setting in beautiful Scotland provides the perfect backdrop for Halley and Tor and their difficult but burgeoning relationship. They both have secrets as do their families. All will be revealed when you read this fabulous story.

What a lovely, romantic read. Halley made for a feisty, intelligent heroine, and Tor was a perfect, swoon-worthy hero for the modern woman who wants to be treated right. Add in a beautiful Highland setting and a sprinkling of likeable side characters and you have the makings of an uplifting and entertaining read. The first Lizzie Lamb book I’ve read, but it definitely won’t be my last.

Halley Dunbar has returned to Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands from her home and job in Hawaii, after a long absence, to represent her family and organise her great uncle Tam’s funeral, as well taking on the emotional task of sorting out his belongings. She used to stay with Tam every summer when she was a teenager in his bothy by Loch Morar, which was part of Sir Montgomery Strachan’s estate. Tam had been the laird’s batman and he and Sir Monty had shared a special and long standing friendship. Sir Monty had gifted the bothy to Tam despite his wife’s strong objections.

Halley is devastated that she left it too late to see the great uncle she loved, and although they did keep in touch over the years, it wasn’t the same as in person. After her last visit and the resulting trauma, Halley found it impossible to return. Now she wished wholeheartedly she had tried to explain why she felt the need to stay away. There was nothing to keep here in Scotland now and she planned to leave straight after the funeral.

'Luckily, the moment she set foot on the silver sands, the clouds parted, and the pale light of a gibbous moon showed the way to the old salmon bothy. Straightening, Halley looked across the loch towards the lights on the far shore and despite her earlier resolution, memories crowded in thick and fast. Voices. Laughter. The touch of a hand on her skin. A Judas kiss. Now she could finally admit that putting her uncle’s affairs in order wasn’t the only reason for making this trip.

She had ghosts to lay.'

Halley hoped she could avoid meeting any of the Strachan family but an unexpected encounter with the eldest of the laird’s children, Hector, put paid to that in a very unexpected way. Hector, or Tor as he is known, is trying to come to terms with his experiences and a severe injury in Afghanistan, also the resulting PTSD, by living alone in his converted Airstream. Halley and Tor both have issues to work through, and with questionable activity going on there’s never a dull moment.

Halley’s plans to steer clear of the Strachans took a further knock when she learned how devastated Sir Monty was by Tam’s death and that he wanted to do as much as he could with regard to the funeral. She found herself becoming involved with the family as her old friend Rowan, who had succeeded her father as undertaker, introduced her to Tor’s sister, Lexie. Her friendship with Tor blossomed and she couldn’t help but like Sir Monty. But her life and work were thousands of miles away and she wanted to get back to it.

I always enjoy Lizzie Lamb’s books for the beautiful settings and sense of place, also the wonderful, sometimes quirky, well developed characters and of course the writing. The characters are engaging, with a couple of exceptions, and realistic. I enjoyed the historical details also. Recommended for those who enjoy a slow burn, believable romance, great characters and stories set in Scotland.

As I’m married to a Scot, I understand the attraction to the idea of dark, brooding men in kilts. Not knowing what to expect from a new - to me – author, I dived straight in, paying little notice to the synopsis. I am so glad that I did, as I discovered the story as I read and loved every part of it.
Halley is a character that I immediately took to. Her loyalty to her family and the memory of her great-uncle conflicted with her strong work ethic. Like Halley, I would also have let family duty win on this kind of occasion. Returning to a place that she fondly remembers from her youth, it’s not long before she begins to remember her reasons for staying away. No spoilers from me, but I felt her pain as she revisited the circumstances that led her to avoid returning for so long and missing time with her great-uncle. Halley is a strong and intelligent woman, and certainly not a victim, but she definitely endured too much.
We then met Tor, who ticked every box as a handsome Scot. Son of the Laird, he has put everything into making sure that the estate remains profitable for the coming generations. As the book progresses, we learn more about his time in Afghanistan and the horrors he witnessed. While his experiences are terrifyingly real, the themes are expertly handled by the author, and I never felt overwhelmed.
One of the more remarkable aspects of this book would have to be the pace. It’s a fine line between not letting the story drag and moving too quickly, this was spot on, and I genuinely couldn’t stop reading. Tor and Halley are wonderfully developed, and I was thoroughly rooting for a happy ending.
There’s a delightful supporting cast of characters that create a strong sense of community and make the story much more relatable. From childhood best friends to arrogant brothers, they each bring a satisfying layer to this wonderful book.
As I mentioned, this is the first time that I’ve read anything from Lizzie, but it certainly won’t be the last. It’s terrific!

Having enjoyed a few of Lizzie Lamb’s novels before, I was looking forward to reading Dark Highland Skies and was not disappointed. Halley Dunbar has come back to Scotland to arrange the funeral of her great-uncle Tam whom she had not seen for twenty years. She plans to clear out Tam’s bothy, and go back home to Hawaii straight after the funeral, but life is never that simple. She had not reckoned on the various members of the Strachan family she would have to deal with, and once again falling under the spell of this beautiful part of the world.
Lizzie Lamb obviously loves the highlands of Scotland as she visits every year to research her books, and this shows in the vivid descriptions of the Silver Sands of Morar. I spent many holidays there and can vouch that she does it justice. If you remember the 1983 film Local Hero, some of the beach scenes were filmed there. After reading Dark Highland Skies, I’m sure many readers will be keen to visit and see the silver sands and dark skies for themselves.
Tor Strachan is portrayed in a believable and sympathetic light, as an ex-Major in the army coming to terms with a life-changing injury and the ongoing effects of PTSD. Halley Dunbar is a highly intelligent woman with a promising career ahead of her, but needs to come to terms with what happened to her all those years ago before it colours the rest of her life. They are supported by a wonderfully drawn cast of characters who range from the quirky to the downright nasty. The story is told from both Halley and Tor’s points of view so we get a more rounded picture. They both have issues to work through before there is room in their lives for a relationship, but they have a strong connection so hopefully it will all work out. I really enjoyed my trip back to Morar in Dark Highland Skies, and look forward to Lizzie Lamb’s next Highland adventure. I review this book as a member of Rosie’s Book Review Team #RBRT

The best thing about Lizzie Lamb’s Scottish romances are the strong characters featured. In Dark Highland Skies, successful astrophysicist Halley Dunbar travels from her home in Hawaii to arrange her Great-Uncle Tam’s funeral in Scotland. Once, she spent every summer staying in his Lochside bothy but when she was 18 a disastrous event there prevented her returning until 20 years later. Now it is too late to make amends and explain herself to her much loved Uncle.
As soon as she arrives there is an explosive encounter between Halley and Tor Strachan, the Laird’s son. Despite his good looks, she has no love for his family, and she resents they way the Strachan family intend to pay for the funeral. Tor is a complex man, a highly skilled army officer he is recovering from a severe injury in Afghanistan and is trying to deal with PTSD. Halley is relieved to meet her old friend Rowan, who has taken over her father’s business as funeral director and soon Halley is also friendly with Tor’s younger sister, Lexie, an affectionate, impulsive girl who explains the background to Tor’s experience.
The story includes detailed descriptions of the Strachan castle and the beautiful beach next to the bothy. There is a feeling of unease conveyed by thefts and unusual activity on the loch but as Halley spends more time with Tor there is a strong connection between them which they both try to fight. As a reader it is difficult to see how the two can ever unite since they both have important roles on different sides of the world and even when dramatic events throw them together their secrets threaten to ruin everything. A real page turner in a wonderful setting.

Having read some of the author’s previous novels and enjoyed them so much, I was looking forward to a new venture with Dark Highland Skies. The cover, a great tempter together with the intriguing blurb, I knew I was in for a treat. From the start I recognised Lizzie Lamb’s wonderful style, yes, she has me, once again engrossed. Halley Dunbar surprised me with her strength and determination, when Hector Strachan appears, someone I now feel for and want to see how she deals with the daunting task of arranging her great-uncle’s funeral after such a shocking, mysterious opening. I imagined treading the silver sands, and seeing the pale light of the gibbous moon. I love visiting Scotland with its out stretched Locks and can envisage how Halley’s memories came rushing in on her return, beautifully described. There is much to discover as the story unfolds with many obstacles to overcome.
If you are looking for a getaway Scottish romance story, where the stars are shinning, heaped with emotion, a little laughter and magnificently described scenery, also steeped in history, this could be next on your list. Best of all, for me the Characters, each and every one, portrayed in a most believable way had me absorbed all the way. Don’t miss this one! You won’t be disappointed.

From the very first page, I wondered why a dedicated astrophysicist would travel thousands of miles, leaving Hawaii for a man she hasn’t seen for twenty years?
Or was something else calling her?

I visited Scotland when I was a child and looked forward to experiencing more of the Scottish way of life. The glorious descriptions in Dark Highland Skies took me back there in no time at all. This was when I made a mental note to read more of Lizzie’s stories!

It is always interesting to see and feel the growing of a relationship first hand. Judging their progress and their failings.
We judge them against some internal chart. None of us are experts in romantic endeavours, but we always have an opinion, don’t we?

I enjoyed the way both characters show their true feelings, not always to each other, but at least we knew what was going on. This is one of the best romances I have ever read, as the electricity between Tor and Halley was brilliantly captivating.
But how can their romance come to anything, if they prefer to live at opposite ends of the world?

I absolutely loved Lizzie Lamb's "Dark Highland Skies." I was drawn to the book's setting in Scotland as I love Scottish novels! The story follows Halley Dunbar, an astrophysicist, who is forced to travel to Lochaber, Scotland to arrange her great-uncle's funeral. The descriptions of the rugged Scottish landscape, which were so vivid that I felt like I was there myself and the little details were excellent, like the mention of my favourite boat, The Waverley!!

The characters in the book were also very well-developed and engaging. I was particularly drawn to Halley's strength and intelligence, and Tor's complex backstory as an Afghan veteran. Their chemistry was palpable from the moment they met, and I enjoyed the slow burn of their romance.

Overall, I would highly recommend "Dark Highland Skies" to anyone who loves a good romance novel. It's the perfect book to curl up with on a rainy day and lose yourself in the beautiful Scottish landscape and dark highland skies!

The uplifting stories are a perfect retreat from the troubled world.
Dark Highland Skies is another triumph for Lizzie Lamb. Who doesn’t love a Highland hero, strong heroine and a wee dram of secrets?
‘We all have demons to confront, secrets we’d rather not share. But that’s life, isn’t it?’
The characters are like good friends who really deserve a happy ending. The deeper you delve into the Halley and Tor’s past, the more you discover about what makes them tick. I wanted to know what was behind Halley’s ‘wall of aloofness’ and why a ‘bleakness appeared to descend’ on Tor. This is a heart-warming story of two lonely people finding each other.
Halley reaches for the stars and meets her destiny. A magical romance under the dark highland skies. As a reader I fell in love with the setting, and the ending was wonderful. If only I could have met charismatic Tam, Halley’s late uncle, who touched everyone’s life in the novel. I did not want to leave Lochaber!

Halley is a strong and independent woman: a high-flying astrophysicist who has left her Scottish roots behind to pursue a glittering career in the USA. But even strong and independent women have hearts that can be broken. When Halley returns to Scotland and meets a man as damaged as she is, and a man, moreover, who happens to be the elder brother of the lover who betrayed her, the scene is set for mutual suspicion and distrust. But, as in all good romances, sizzling sexual tension will have its way, and after the inevitable hiccups the ending is as satisfying as any reader could wish.

However, as previous reviewer has commented, this book is in desperate need of a good line-by-line copy edit. I noticed plenty of small mistakes – internment instead of interment, for example – but the most egregious is that Hawaii is referred to as the 51st state. There are only 50 states in the USA. Reluctantly I had to award four stars to what should clearly be a five star book.

I Enjoyed reading another of Lizzie Lamb's tales set in Scotland. In this, the hero, Hector Strachan, or 'Tor' as he's known is a soldier recovering from PTSD. The author deals with this topic in a sensitive and informative way. The heroine, Halley Dunbar, an Astrophysicist, is over at the Strachan's for her great uncle Tam's funeral and to sort out his estate. She hasn't visited in 20 years, although very close to her uncle due to past secrets connected with the Strachan family. After an inauspicious first meeting with Tor, strong feelings develop between them before the secrets of the past rise up to threaten their fragile and newly formed relationship.

A Wonderful Read

* Dark Highland Skies is a heartfelt romance set in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. It follows Halley, an astrophysicist, and Tor, an ex-soldier with PTSD, as they navigate their emotional baggage and slowly fall in love. Their relationship develops gradually, making it feel real and deeply emotional.

The Scottish setting adds a magical touch, with the landscape almost becoming a character itself. Lizzie Lamb weaves in themes of love, loss, and healing, balancing heavy emotions with moments of humor and charm. If you enjoy slow-burn romances with depth, this is a great pick!

I read Winter Star in the Scottish Highlands first and loved it. Even though I read book two first it hasn’t spoilt my enjoyment of this book and it explains in more detail what happened when Halley and Tor met.
There is so much to love about this book, the characters, the setting which is Scotland and the storytelling which was filled with family, drama, community and a beautiful romance. I particularly loved the Scottish turn of phrase that the author used throughout.

A lovely endearing tale of two unlikely lovers

I am so glad I got to read this book. Every page was a Turner and I was always thinking as I read, when and how will it happen? Apart from Tor who is obviously so handsome and Halley, the brilliant-minded astrophysist, I have loved all the characters and what they bring to Halley and Tor's story. Ps. I even love Tam and Monty!
