A wonderful story which spans across the years from 1920 through on past the war years. It was the sort of book to get lost in.

Having thoroughly enjoyed previous novels by Judith Lennox, I was very much looking forward to this one. And to be honest, I did enjoy most of the book, but the last fifth of the book totally let it down. Without giving anything away, all I can say is that the part after the war about one of the sisters seems to me quite pointless, and didnt really go anywhere! It felt as though the author had to write a set amount of words/pages and this was just a fill in! A couple of loose ends were tied, yes, but other than that I felt myself willing the book to end. a shame, as it did have potential.

Первая книга этой английской писательницы. Понравилась эпоха, сплетение судеб, развитие событий в Англии и Италии, которые я искренне люблю. Понравились сильные женские характеры. Иногда даже находила что-то сходное с книгами Пилчер. Но последние две части были менее детально прописаны, иногда больше напоминали некое изложение или краткий вариант книги для студентов в Интернете. Поставила высший бал за эпоху и свою любовь к английским романам.

Da ich schon ein Buch der Autorin gelesen habe, kam dieses Buch in meine Hände. Ich dachte vom Titel und der Beschreibung auf dem Klappentext, dass es eine schnulzige Liebesgeschichte wird, was es letztendlich gar nicht war. Das Buch war zu meiner Überraschung viel mehr. Eigentlich geht es mehr oder weniger um zwei Schwestern, die in jungen Jahren ihren Weg im Leben suchen und wie sich deren Leben durch die dann folgenden dramatischen Kriegsgeschehen gestalten. Der vermeintliche italienische Geliebte spielt gar nicht so die tragende Rolle. Hin und wieder zog sich das Buch durch lange Beschreibungen, wo man hier und da hätte kürzen können, aber am Ende ergeben sich auch einige Parallelen beziehungsweise Gedanken des Lesers aufgrund der ausführlichen Erzählungen und Handlungssträngen. Zum Ende hinzu kam es auch zu Wendungen, die ich so nicht erwartet hatte.
Insgesamt hat mich das Buch doch sehr berührt, da es auch anregt über das eigene Leben und einzelne Entscheidungen nachzudenken.

I liked large parts of this book, but especially the last 100-150 pages I only finished because I had read the 450-500 preceding them. Sometimes at the end of a book the author ties up some loose ends to finish off the story in a few pages. Here, apparently, 100-150 pages were needed to tie up loose ends. The book would have been a lot better with some 100 pages less.

This was such a sad book! I didn't want her and her baby to die. But it was worth my tears, at the end her sister finds her one true love:)

This beautifully written book has an overwhelming theme of love and loss, and expertly captures the hedonistic atmosphere of pre war WW2 London and Europe.
Tessa Nicholson is young and very beautiful, she embraces love and passion with joie de vivre, and yet when she meets and falls in love with a married man her whole life is irrevocably changed. Her younger sister Frederica, has a stabilising influence but with war looming the sisters need to make their own very difficult choices.
I really enjoyed this book, Judith Lennox has an easy style of writing that captivates from the opening line, she has long been one of my favourite authors and this latest book is a perfect summer read.

This book follows the lives of 3 strong women from the moment their paths cross. The story shows how the actions of one person can have far reaching consequences on the lives of the others. The book is nicely written although I found it a bit long winded at times. The story took of slow so it wasn’t till about a third of the way into the book before it became captivating. Once it did it was hard to put down. The main characters are three unique women each with their own unique personalities formed by their experiences in life. The book takes place in England and in Italy and spans the period from the nineteen thirties until in the nineteen sixties.
Overall:
This book has a well developed plot with interesting strong characters each with their own unique personalities. The book was a bit slow to start but once you get past this the story really captures you. All this together with the locations and the historical background the story is set against makes this book an interesting and enjoyable read.

Die Charaktere, ob nun tot oder lebendig, blieben mir bis zum Schluss ziemlich egal - mit keinem konnte ich Mitgefühl empfinden. Wahrscheinlich weil es so viele Nebencharaktere gab, die auch noch irgendeine Geschichte nebenbei erzählten. Normalerweise stört mich das nicht, aber hier war viel zu viel Dramatik auf einen Haufen, das mir die Schicksale der eigentlichen Hauptpersonen - Tessa und Freddie - dann auch egal waren.
Das ist wirklich schade, denn eigentlich war so viel Potenzial vorhanden und wenn die Autorin bei den Schwestern blieb, wurde es auch interessant.
Kurzum: eher mittelmäßig, da hab ich schon bessere von der Autorin gelesen.
(übrigens: der italienische Geliebte kommt so gut wie gar nicht vor. Keine Ahnung, was dieser Titel soll, sehr irreführend)

A simply wonderful read! I was enthralled by this book from beginning to end and thrilled to have found another author whose writing style was so enjoyable.
A sweeping saga that follows several characters before and after WW2 in Italy and England, Catching the Tide superbly conveys the atmosphere of the time, and the description of places and people was so beautifully detailed I felt like I was right there with characters, enjoying or enduring their lives. A few tears were shed part way through, for me a sure sign that a character has entered my heart.
More Judith Lennox books are on my 'to read' list now and I hope they are all as excellent as this one.

Stunning,epic tale
I absolutely rushed through this,but I know it is one to read again. It is about elegant,privileged,Bohemian people..a world away from my own life..but it is a tale of great courage, and patience in adversity.A very well-researched book with a great feel for that period of the 20th century. Wonderful characters.

I wasn't sure if i could get to the end but I did and I'm glad. The story cleverly plots the lives of 2 pairs of sisters up to and throughout WWII
I will be honest sometimes I skimmed the pages as so much description I find can be tedious. However that said the author laid the plot and and I loved the atmosphere she created both in Italy and within the art community. Yes 4 stars

I always enjoy reading something a bit different and this was one of those books. Set partly in England and partly in Italy, and spanning quite a period of time, the book interwove the lives and experiences of several people. Sad and tragic in parts with characters who I found believable and who entered and finished sometimes complicated relationships. A very good read without being outstanding.

I usually am engrossed in Judith Lennox’s books but I was disappointed with Catching the Tide. I found myself speed reading to get through parts of it just waiting to get to the end. The only character I felt anything for was Freddie the younger of the two sisters. Fortunately the loose ends are tied up in the last couple of chapters.

I really liked this book but found there was too many storylines and didn’t really flow, I think it was sweet but not a page turner. 3 stars from me.

England, 1933: Als der berühmte Schriftsteller Milo Rycroft an einen gefrorenen Weiher die Mannequin Tessa Nicolson trifft, ahnt keiner, dass diese schicksalhafte Begegnung das Leben dreier Frauen für immer verändern wird. Da ist Tessa selbst, die ihre italienische Jugendliebe lange nicht vergessen konnte und nun nicht mehr an die Liebe glaubt. Getroffen von einem schweren Schicksalsschlag kehrt sie nach Italien zurück. Ihre mit ihr zusammen in Italien aufgewachsene Schwester Frederica, genannt Freddie, anfangs das bloße Anhängsel ihrer berühmten Schwester, die später auf sich allein gestellt in England alles vermeintlicher Sicherheit unterordnet. Und dann ist da noch Rebecca Rycroft, die viel zu lange an der vertrockneten Ehe mit Milo fest gehalten hat und erst spät ihr Leben selbst in die Hand nimmt. Sie alle suchen ihr Glück in den Wirren vor, während und nach den 2. Weltkrieg.
Die Erzählung begleitet immer jeweils eine der drei Frauen, anfangs auch Milo. Was als harmlose Begegnung am Weiher beginnt, wird zum zerstörerischen Sturm, der ihr altes Leben davon bläst. Die Handlung erzählt, wie jede der drei Frauen versucht ihren Weg zu gehen, nicht frei von Rückschlägen und geprägt durch schmerzhafte Selbsterkenntnis. Sie müssen lernen, dass die Pfade der Liebe steinig und verschlungen sind. Weite Strecken der Handlung spielen in England, doch auch Italien spielt eine Rolle.
Ein echter Lennox. Genauso, wie ich ein Buch von ihr erwartet habe – das ist Stärke und Schwäche zugleich. Starke Gefühle, Irrungen und Wirrungen der Liebe, Frauen machen ihren Weg – das sind nun einmal die klassischen Zutaten von ihr und werden gekonnt mit einer Prise Schuld zusammengemischt. Allerdings fand ich es dadurch auch etwas zu vorhersehbar und zu “konservativ”: Der italienische Freigeist wird gebrochen. Die auf Sicherheit Bedachte erkennt, dass nichts sicher ist. Und die sich selbst in ihrer Ehe Begrabende erkennt, dass sie ein selbstständiger Mensch mit Talenten ist. Das ist ziemlich moralisch. Unpassend dazu fand ich die extreme sexuelle Freizügigkeit der Protagonisten - ich glaube nicht, dass das Buch mit weniger Betonung der zahllosen Liebschaften schwächer gewesen wäre. Das Ganze ist sehr hübsch erzählt und toll übersetzt worden, so dass es sprachlich ein wahrer Genuss ist. Auch das Cover fängt gut die Stimmung des Buches ein.
Juliane Köhler ist eine tolle Sprecherin, welche die Geschichte unaufgeregt und dennoch gefühlvoll erzählt. Dabei schafft sie es, durch ihre Stimme den jeweiligen Charakter der Frauen durchklingen zu lassen. Eine wahre Freude, sich von ihr dieses Buch vorlesen zu lassen.
Ein typischer Lennox mit den üblichen Zutaten, für Fans und alle, die auf dieses Genre mögen, zu empfehlen. Einzig das Fehlen echter Überraschungen und die zahllosen Liebschaften geben einen halben Stern Abzug.

This was quite a complicated plot to try and review but I'll have a go. When beautiful model Tessa has an affair with married author Milo, she is unprepared for the tragic fallout. In desperation, she flees to Florence where she is caught up in the horrors of WWII in Italy. Younger sister, Freddie, also affected by the tragedy, is forced to make her own way in life in wartime London. Running through the plot is the story of Rebecca, Milo's wife, who has to learn to live with the fact that she was responsible for the tragedy and in doing so, destroyed her marriage. Although this was an absorbing and compelling read, from a writer's point of view, I felt there was too much narrative and exposition, particularly in the early stages.

Hm. Hab ich aus der Bücherei ausgeliehen als Hörbuch und die ganze Zeit darauf gewartet, dass die Story jetzt endlich mal Fahrt aufnimmt. Hat sie aber nicht. Und auch die Vorleserin war jetzt nicht gerade der Reißer. Eigentlich mag ich Frau Lennox sehr gern, Tildas Geheimnis z.B. mag ich sehr, aber dieses Buch ist nicht meins. Mittelmässig, höchstens. Und wieso der deutsche Verlag "Der italienische Geliebte" als Titel wählte? Keine Ahnung, aus meiner Sicht kommt der gar nicht vor - oder soll das Guido sein? Könnte natürlich sein, dass das Hörbuch höchst ungeschickt gekürzt wurde.

Don't think I've ever read a 598 page book so quickly, nor enjoyed one quite as much - wonderful escapism for a self-indulgent weekend, a superb story of the lives of three strong women set against a backdrop of war-torn Europe, so well written. I lived and breathed with Tessa, Freddie and Rebecca the whole way through, felt the sadness, and the guilt - one of those books that made me sorry to leave it. Off to seek out her back catalogue forthwith...

I enjoyed this, very well written and atmospheric, but not one of my favourites by Judith Lennox. I found it a bit depressing, with all the death and more than one character having failed marriages. Set during WW2 so I guess that's probably to be expected. I always enjoy the way she uses three or four main characters, who are usually linked in some way, and the story jumps between each one.

At the beginning I couldn't put this book down and got wrapped up in the story... However the pace slowed and purpose in the storyline for lost. Overall the interweaving between the 3 women's love stories and trials were interesting to compare and contrast. Would definitely read another of the authors books. Overall very enjoyable.

Twee zussen groeien op in Toscane. Ze trekken naar Engeland, eentje wordt een heel bekent model. Na een mislukte liefde affaire trekt het model zich terug uit de modellen wereld en gaat terug in Italië wonen.
