A chance meeting on a train to Tokyo sends two girls named Nana on a collision course with destiny!

Nana "Hachi" Komatsu hopes that moving to Tokyo will help her make a clean start and leave her capricious love life behind her. Nana Osaki, who arrives in the city at the same time, has plans to score big in the world of rock'n'roll. Although these two young women come from different backgrounds, they quickly become best friends in a whirlwind world of sex, music, fashion, gossip and all-night parties!

Ai Yazawa (Japanese: 矢沢あい, Yazawa Ai) is a Japanese manga author and illustrator. Her pen name comes from singer Eikichi Yazawa, of whom she is a fan.
Yazawa started her comics career in 1985. She specialises in shojo manga (girls' comics). Most of her works have been serialised in the magazines 'Ribon', 'Cookie' and 'Zipper'.
Yazawa's stories focus on young, often rebellious women and their relationships. The characters are always very stylish, and Yazawa herself is known for her sense of fashion. (She even attended a fashion school for some time after high school.)
Among her most famous manga are Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai (I'm No Angel, 1992–1995), Neighborhood Story (1995-1998), Paradise Kiss (1999-2004), and Nana (2000-2009), the latter awarded a Shogakukan Manga Award in 2003. Some of these works have been adapted into anime and live action movies.

I love that this one is told from the perspective of Nana O. I think it gives the manga a different vibe. I can't believe what's going on with Nana K. I mean what is she thinking!! I understand why she's doing what she's doing, but at the same time I don't and part of me wishes I could connect to her through this, but I can't with Takumi around. He's sleezy and a mess and I can't believe she would even want him around especially when it's clear he's doing what he's doing for selfish reasons. I guess that means I just have to pick up the next volume to see what happens.

Everyone in this place has dubious morals, and I adore them for it. My heart was moved and surprised by Nana O's narration. Despite the fact that it is a controversial choice, I hope Takumi treats Hachi well. Nobu deserves much better though.

I despise Takumi.... truely... I think Nobu and Nana and Hachi and Yasu and Ren coukd have figured out a way to take care of the baby till Hachi could work again. And Nobu woukd be a rock star maybe even before the baby was born. I am so confused with the naration. Starting with this book, it's obvisouly Osaki. So was it always Osaki? Or did they switch for this and the next, since I already started it?

Coup de cœur pour ce tome dont la narration est faite par Nana Osaki. La relation qui unit ces deux femmes brisées par la vie est si émouvante, je ne me lasse décidément pas de relire ce manga qui me bouleverse toujours autant.

Angst level up 😭😭

Man, this taught me a lesson in the consequences of hedonism. Lol, it makes the fun stuff look so dangerous in hindsight, but I’m cheering for Hatchi; although she’ll need a whole lot more than cheer in the next stages of her life 😅

Poor Nobu.

I knew it was coming but this volume HURT to read. I think this is the point in the story where things truly start to change for the characters, and Yazawa handles their flaws in a way that's infuriatingly realistic. As ever, Nana's an impossible series to put down.

(Not taking away any stars for this since it's a pretty minor publishing issue, but I wish VIZ included the Junko's Place special from the Japanese 7.8 - the bonus pages state that you need to read it to know what's going on, but that fanbook was never translated to English!)

*4.25

Oh MAN, things are happening now!

Serious issues are leaking into the series now... or maybe they've just finally been made real.

But - and I say this in every review - I love watching the relationship between the two Nanas develop, as well as being able to see it from each of their perspectives. I would've liked a convo between them near the end here... but we'll wait for volume 9 I suppose!

4.25/5 stars!

"Maybe you haven't noticed that your most minimal movements provoke disorder in my heart with a force comparable to that of a typhoon... I feel like a teenage boy discovering love."

this might be my favorite volume so far! the drama has been building up well. it seems to reach a tipping point with hachi's revelation, but things will definitely get worse. a marriage/baby with takumi is destined to fail because of how manipulative he is and neither he nor hachi are ready for that for a million different reasons.

on another note, nana o's feelings for hachi are so extremely obvious even though she always tries to deflect or play it off. in a perfect world, they would end up together, but we unfortunately don't live in a perfect world.

How stupid is this Hachi? Why would you want to keep a baby if you have no stable job, no house, not even a stable relationship.... My gosh. You're stupid girl ✨👍
