BDSM Bondage Ranch; Previous Pushing LimitsThe afternoon after her divorce, Selena runs into James Culver and has the sex of her life. When she wakes up, he’s gone, leaving her with an unquenched taste for being tied up. A year later she finds herself at Bondage Ranch, wanting for once and for all to come to terms with her kinky desires. She doesn’t expect to find James there, tempting her with his hot kisses and bedroom dominance.James is surprised to find the woman who has haunted his dreams ever since he left her for an emergency, at Bondage Ranch. He came to Bondage Ranch to find a murderer, not kinky sex, and certainly not to fall in love. But his hunt for the murderer is getting nowhere and he’s getting everywhere with Selena -- until one of the guests at the ranch turns up missing.Publisher's This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find Anal play/intercourse, BDSM theme and elements, violence.
I'd say this is my favorite of the series so far: Selena's a newly-divorced woman with a nine-year old son (ex-husband was emotionally and physically abusive to both) who, to her surprise, lets herself get picked up by a Dom in a bar, James - and he introduces her to bondage and mild corporal as the most mind-blowing sex of her life. He leaves while she's sleeping afterwards (to defuse a bomb, as it turns out - he's with the State Police Bomb Squad), and they both keep just missing reconnecting for about a year. Park Ranger Selena's convinced he just fucked her and left her, and she really really wants more of his Sweet Dominant Loving - and James is convinced she lied about her name ("Selena" isn't her legal first name, even though everybody uses it), and he really really wants to see if she's not only the Subbe He's Always Wanted, but also maybe a future wife!
Turns out Selena is old friends with Laera, the Librarian/Martial Artist subbe of the first book in this series, ROPED IN. She and Bruce are in a long-standing committed relationship by now (at one point Bruce calls Laera his "fiancée", though that's not followed up elsewhere), though Selena didn't previously realize just how much she and Laera have in common - until she spots a flyer for a semi-annual big get-together at Bondage Ranch! After pressing Laera for details, she decides to go and see if she can't find a Dom who can give her what her afternoon delight with the mysterious "James" did....
Do You Have To Close Your Eyes to Guess Where This Is Going...? :D
James, meanwhile, has a bit more on his plate than the newly-divorced subbe he can't forget: Seemingly, a redheaded female serial killer is going around, torture-killing Doms after picking them up at BDSM get-togethers or online chats. He tries to convince his superior that he should be sent undercover to the big Bondage Ranch get-together because, as someone openly into The Scene (he attends munches, and lectures at meetings on "soft" b&d and the legalities of BDSM in his home state - presumably Virginia), he knows the regulars there and how to Walk the Walk. His request is turned down because, as is reasonably pointed out, as a Detective-Specialist (Bomb Squad, along with CSI and Computer Crime cops, tend to be Detective-Specialists rather than Detective-Investigators) he has very little undercover experience - but, if he was intending to go anyway, keeping his eyes and ears open and reporting anything suspicious to the Task Force would certainly be helpful!
Hopefully Not James's Squadroom
Selena arrives at Bondage Ranch a bit early, but is met by Alex, who runs Bondage Ranch with her husband Dylan (she's - submissive to him...usually...when she feels he's not out of line.... ;) ). Alex lets Selena know that Bruce and Laera asked them to keep an eye on her to be sure she didn't run into any problems until they showed up, and to otherwise feel free to wander - so she does, first running into Gordon the Asshole Dom*, who Selena thankfully manages to get away from, and wanders into the forest, only to find James seemingly flirting with another redhead, Carolyn!
The Law of Conservation of Humiliation States Selena and James Will Find Each Other Again At The Most Embarrassing Moment Possible....
James, of course, is chatting up every redhead at the event to see what their names are, so he can have background checks run on them as part of his "keeping his eyes and ears open" not-quite orders. Since Selena is a redhead herself, this gives James several uncomfortable moments (quite aside from the one where he realizes if he ever wants to talk to her again, he'll have to eat some serious crow first!) - could the woman he's so strongly attracted to be a serial killer? He quickly makes his apologies to Carolyn and runs to catch up to Selena, who at this point is stewing in her room thinking she just might slap him for playing light with her feelings. However, after a bit of arguing, a bit of groveling (I really like that James isn't afraid to admit to a woman he's Dominant to when's he's wrong!), an obvious lie (James tells Selena he's a chemical engineer rather than a cop - and thinks she actually buys that!), and more than a bit of flirting, they both admit they've never forgotten each other, and she submits eagerly to him again and they make love. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending), her roommate is Valerie - another recurring character, who is completely bisexual and switchable, and would be delighted to be the ham in Selena's and James's sandwich if they're at all interested!
Valerie's Hope For How This Weekend Will End
Right about then - Bruce and Laera show up to check up on Selena, and find her and James in bed together, with Valerie...being Valerie. Selena is incredibly embarrassed by what seems to her to be an endless parade of people interrupting her post-coital time with James!
Too Bad She's Not Groucho Marx
James decides to return to his room, where Bruce comes to give him The Talk: Selena's got friends here who care for her, and are watching out for her and emotional well-being - and since when does James do public scening, anyway? James appreciates Bruce's concern since he's starting to fall hard for Selena, but is less successful at dodging WTF he's doing hanging out at Bondage Ranch's biggest annual event, which he usually avoids like the plague.
The next morning, James is up early, having gotten the background checks he requested which clear both Selena and Valerie at the crack of dawn, when he sees Selena walking into the woods. Being all Protective Dom James follows her, despite the fact Selena knows these woods like the back of her hand, and James - isn't exactly the outdoor type. While communing with nature she overhears a guy begging, and a "rough-voiced" man and a woman mocking him - being new to The Scene, she's uncertain if the man is in real danger, or if it's just three people playing harder than she likes! Selena meets James going back, as she's not sure that what she heard wasn't just a really hardcore threesome - and when she asks him about it, James is also pretty sure it's just that as well, and besides it's starting to rain and they should get back inside...!
Romantic? Hell, Yes! Solving A Crime...? Not So Much
Ms. van Yssel does a really good job of putting together the thriller/b&d romance building blocks for a good story - it could just be a three-person scene since Selena didn't hear the begging man give a safeword, and the woods are where couples and groups looking for more adventurous/private play tend to go. She's also good at not stringing out the "James Lied to Selena!" melodrama any more than necessary - that afternoon after they've played a bit, she flat-out says she knows he's lying through his teeth about being a "chemical engineer", and that if this is anything more than a quick kinky fuck she wants to know what he really does for a living. He admits to being a cop, admits to knowing her background because he did a background check on her, and while not going into specifics about what he's "helping investigate" tells her that's why he's been chatting up redheads - including Carolyn, who Selena's still a bit cheesed about. Thankfully, they have the rest of the afternoon and night to get past that, with lots and lots of loving dominance and sex.
Lots and Lots and LOTS of Loving Dominance and Sex....
The next morning, Bruce knocks on their door to tell James that Gordon the Asshole Dom has been missing for 24 hours - and since the storm that started the day before knocked out the phone lines, they can't call the cops. Since James is a cop, could he investigate, please? James agrees - and, while he's not incompetent at it, it's clear that his supervisor was right in pointing out that investigations aren't his strongest suit. Worse, he goes all Protective Dom on Selena and leaves her behind when he heads out in the storm to investigate where she'd heard the "rough scene" going on yesterday morning, despite the fact she's much better able to navigate the woods than he is! Selena is not happy about this, to say the least....
A Guy Blundering Into Dangerous Situations Because He's Trying to "Protect" The Far-More-Capable Woman He Loves - Now, Where Have I Seen This Before...?
After crashing about in the woods for an hour, James finds the spot Selena told him about - by literally falling into the waterlogged shallow grave the killers dug to bury Gordon's body! He goes back hoping the phone service is back, but when he finds it isn't, he realizes the best thing he has to a lead is Selena's having heard the "raspy-voiced man"'s speak. After making it up to her for leaving her behind (and not doing very well on his own), he asks if she'd recognize his voice again if she heard it - she says she not only would, she'd been listening for it since he'd ditched her to go mud-bathing! James concocts a plan to listen for the voice with two of his likely suspects - but it involves public play, which neither of them is into at all. He ties her to a horse, blindfolds her and gives her a teasing spanking, while she listens to see if she can hear the right voice over the crowd. She does, though it's not who James thought it might be - and when she tries to signal James, the killer takes off. James tells Bruce to look out for Selena as he gives chase - only to get tripped by Carolyn, the flaky subbe he'd been chatting up when Selena first saw him! Arresting her and leaving her in the hands of Arthur and a few other Dom/mes and sub/bes, he charges out into the woods, realizes he has no clue how to track a man in the rain - and Selena, who Bruce freed, comes up behind him, and reminds him that she does....
What I really like about these two is that they've got a highly complementary relationship. Selena may be submissive in the bedroom, but outside it she's good at her job and doesn't want James to hold her back. For James's part, while he's got a cool head under fire and steady hands (valuable for defusing bombs - or ), he's a middling detective who's got no talent for undercover work, and needs to learn that he can trust the woman he's in love with as a professional as well as a romantic/Scene partner. Even better, they're smart people who flirt and banter even during lovemaking, and while there's some angst at the start, by the time they sort out the mixups they're pretty much completely together. I'd love to see a spinoff series of James and Selena solving Scene-related crimes - I think they makes a great team of Master&subbe crimefighters!
I Admit, By the Re-Read I Was Openly Picturing Castle and Beckett as James and Selena - if Castle Were the Cop in the Relationship, and if Beckett Had a Submissive Bone in Her Body!
If there's a criticism of Sindra van Yssel's writing, it's a bit of a tendency towards "Insta-Love!" among the main pair. They meet, the attraction is powerful and immediate, and after a complication or two they end up in a monogamous and essentially permanent D/s relationship. When it's done well you hardly notice, because the couple just seems to belong together - and while I had my qualms on the initial reading of this book, by the re-read it all felt like their relationship happened at pretty much the right pace for two people looking to connect, who did so - truly, madly, deeply. --- * Gordon is the guy who Bruce's ex-fiancée , and who (ROPED IN); and was the guy who thought Samantha (PUSHING LIMITS). He's a real charmer, Gordon - though I think I should have realized sooner he was, in the words of John Scalzi's REDSHIRTS, a Mauveshirt (aka "a Redshirt With a Backstory"). Bondage Ranch 3: Moving On, is romance and mystery all in one. I loved the strong Dom James. He was a more tender and loving character than you would at first expect. Selena is easy to love in this story. Her innocence and need to find and own her sexuality will have you captivated. When James helps Selena feel what shes been fantasizing about, it’s easy to soar with her.
James and Selena share a chemistry and love that is palpable. This story keeps your attention the whole way through. Some of the secondary characters are ones from the previous story Pushing Limits. It was very entertaining to encounter them once more.
The author does a really great job of making her characters seem more realistic. Selena and James have jobs, families, and activities they are a part of that are separate from their sexual exploits. There was a really nice balance to the separation throughout the story. Sindra van Yssel wraps up Bondage Ranch 3: Moving On very nicely on a lighter note and leaves the reader very satisfied. Another trip to Bondage Ranch is always welcomed!
The same day as her divorce is final, Selena has her first encounter with BDSM. James, a Dom, meets her, by chance, in a bar, and they have the afternoon of their life together. Unfortunately, James gets called away on an emergency call, and doesn´t have any contact info to Selena. A year goes by and now Selena has a weekend booked at the Bondage Ranch. Who happens to be there at the same retreat? =) Her favorite Dom. It doesn´t take much for them to get together again, but someone is killing Doms and James is a cop, trying to find who and why they´re doing this. BDSM, hot smexin and smutty fluff. Started with the third book in the series, but there was no problem with reading out of order. Other than that i need to read the first two, asap =D
Moving on is an outstanding slow slide into the BDSM world. Sindra Van Yssel offered just enough of an introduction for the reader to become curious but not enough to scare the more timid reader. I found the characters outstanding and the mystery choreographed with a perfect rhythm. Moving On is perfect for those curious about the lifestyle and people who live it.
Even though this is the third book in the Bondage Ranch series I have to start by saying it would be a perfect book for those who haven't read BDSM before. Definately the best one I could come up with.
The BDSM is all very sensual. No pain. It is all about an enhanced sexual experience and while the couple does witness some play in public, the description is very obtuse, and their play remains quite private. There isn't any menage and very mild butt playing but no anal sex.
There are couples like this in the BDSM community. But it would be one extream in my opinon; the private bedroom players who just enjoy dominance and submission for pleasure. On the other end would be the sadists and masochist who prefer a total power exchange, and love really has nothing to do with it. A TPE relationship with stuff like cutting and asphixiation would be that end of the spectrum in my opinon. But everyone has their own opinion. The point is that this is as light as it gets in reading and you can find steps from here that take you more into the middle of the road in other books if it interests you.
Cherise sinclair does a Club Shadowlands series that really helps you understand the mindset of the dominant and submissive. Why they do What they do. BUT, it isn't as vanilla as this. There is exhibitionism and public play (not necessarily sex).
Another great thing about this book for beginners is the strong suspense plot. BDSM Doms are being murdered and James is a cop who happens to be active in the BDSM community, so he starts poking his nose around. Selena is a park ranger. The two happen to end up at Bondage Ranch out in the boondocks next to a state park Selena used to work at, and of course the murderer strikes again leaving the two of them to figure out who it is.
I happen to enjoy everything about this book. I liked that the very sensual side was represented= I think they are far under represented in literature. I also enjoyed the relationship development and play between James and Selena, and the murder mystery was an added bonus. It all just added up well for me.
HEAs are my thing. Love 'm. Protective, caring, adoring alpha males, also my thing. Really love them!
Books 1 and 2 in the series are a little more typical. The Doms are more Dommy and expect more from their subs and push them harder. It's just a little more uncomfortable, but for those of us who read from this subgenre often, it's pretty tame.
The third book of Ms. Yssel's bondage ranch is a great read. I like how we learn more and more about the bondage ranch. What I particular like about Ms. Yssel's stories is her positive portray of the BDSM lifestyle. While there are kooks out there, she shows how it is handled. I admire this about Ms. Yssel.
I like the concept of a romantic bdsm novel and also that a murder mystery was mixed in. The problem was that I didn't feel that much of the heat in this novel, but in that I couldn't identify with the main characters and feel their attraction but also in that the bdsm action was of the milder kind.
Best book in the series- an intriguing murder mystery, very sensual scenes, hot characters (sexy cop and a tall, curvy woman, woot!), and a lovely HEA. All in all, a very enjoyable series!
I've enjoyed all the books in this series to this point, and Moving On, Book #3 is my favorite so far. Really enjoyed the divorcee and the cop together. Sweet romance with a mystery plot is a book I can sink my teeth into anytime.
A little murder mystery twist in this one! I love a good detective, and or bomb defuser! A look at the softer side of this community with texture play vs pain. Wonderful romance.
