Ilgai galvojau skirti 2 ar 3 žvaigždutes, bet dievaži, paskutinius porą skyrių skaitydama, galvojau, kad šita knyga tęsiasi amžinybę ir niekad nepasibaigs... Nors vienu puslapiu daugiau ir turbūt apskritai būčiau nebaigusi skaityti.
Manau, jeigu būčiau skaičiusi angliškai, būčiau skyrusi ir tas 3*, bet prastas vertimas (milicija, ekvivokcija, survivalistai (nors dėl šitų, tai nežinau, gal ir nėra lietuviško atitikmens) ) ir visiškas redaktoriaus nebuvimas badė akis kas antrame puslapyje. O dar pridėkime ir tai, kad pirminė medžiaga ne pati geriausia (kažkuriam skyriuj autorius rašo, kad pasaulyje yra 8 mlrd gyventojų) ir gausime šitą knygą, kurios idėja tikrai įdomi ir yra pateikta gan įdomių faktų, bet jie, deja, surašyti be jokios akivaizdžios struktūros.
Nors skyriai apie Jakudza ir triadas buvo visai neblogi, ar bent jau ne tokie blogi kaip pirmieji skyriai.
Trumpai tariant, kaip populiaroji mokslinė literatūra šita knyga nėra pakankamai įdomi, o kaip akademinė knyga, pernelyg subjektyvi ir per prastai parašyta.

A pretty good introduction to several secret societies, it includes Mafia, Yakuza and Skull and Bones initiation rites. I have read alternate versions of a couple of these but they seem authentic. Perhaps more importantly it warns against the very real danger of government agencies such as the N.S.C. as compared to mostly benign, fraternal Orders such as the Freemasons. An opinionated but very informative read.

Salaseurojen historiasta kirjoittaminen on kunnianhimoinen tavoite. Ihan jo siitä syystä, että salaseurojen tietojen saaminen saattaa olla hankalaa. Niin nytkin ja kirjan lopussa kirjoittaja itsekin myöntää, ettei tietoa valtavasti ole. Parasta (ja tarkinta) tieto on historiallisissa salaseuroissa, kuten assassiineissa, mutta epätarkkuutta sekä asiavirheitä alkaa olla mitä lähemmäksi nykypäivää tullaan.

Samoin lähdekritiikki on unohtunut, lähteiksi on kelpuutettu lehtiartikkelit, joista lähteiksi ovat kelvanneet toimittajan tulkinnat tapahtumista, eivät todelliset tapahtumat.

Skeptisyyttä ja epäilyä salaseuroja kohtaan puolustetaan esimerkeillä, joita ei kirjassa ole edes käsitelty ennen puolustuspuheenvuoroa tai joilla ei välttämättä ole löyhää historiallista yhteyttä (esim sama aikakausi tai maanosa) merkityksellisempää linkkiä.

Hyvä idea, historiaosuuden pohjalta mielenkiintoinen, mutta loppua kohti kyykkäsi ja pahasti.

Kömpelösti käännetty Varjojen väki pyrkii kartoittamaan salaseurojen historiaa läpi aikojen, mutta kompastelee koko matkan, aina aiheiden valinnasta argumentoitiin. John Lawrence Reynolds on tuottelias kirjailija, joka selittää osaltaan Varjojen väen aika hutiloitua otetta. Kiinnostavat historialliset yksityiskohdat käytännössä juostaan läpi, eikä loppuun koottu salaseura-analyysi tarjoa muuta kuin ristiriitaisia havaintoja ja moralisointia.

Įdomi knyga apie slaptas pasaulio organizacijas. Tikrai daug jų yra. Tikėjausi platesnio ir gylesnio kiekvienos organizacijos aprašymo, apibūdinimo. Kai kurios tik paminėtos. apie kai kurias daugiau parašyta. Tokiam bendram paviršiniam susipažinimui labai gera knyga. Dabar nori daugiau sužinoti apie kai kurias iš paminėtų organizacijų. Daug nuorodų į kitus šaltinius. Tik ieškok ir skaityk. Daug slaptų organizacijų yra tiesiog kai kurių žmonių fantazijos vaisius.

Extremely interesting and incredibly well researched. This read was well worth the time and its accuracy makes this book a must read as it goes beyond conspiracy theorists suppositions. Well informed and the research was acutely definitive. I enjoyed this book so much is that I read it a couple of more times, the last time was just a month ago.

Kirja on helppoa ja osin mielenkiintoistakin luettavaa. Reynoldsin tiedot eivät kuitenkaan aina ole täysin paikkaansapitäviä, mikä käy ilmi ainakin wiccalaisuutta (ja noitavainoja) sekä populäärikulttuurin salaseuroja käsittelevissä luvuissa. Nämä bongaamani epäkohdat saavat väistämättä aikaan sen, että jäin miettimään myös muiden lukujen paikkansapitävyyttä.
Kirjan loppupuolella myös suomennos horjuu, ja mukaan tulee outoja pikkuvirheitä sekä toimimattomia lauseita. Ehkä suomentajalta loppui aika kesken.

I had put this book aside as I found it very pedestrian in its presentation on 'secret societies'; adding very little to what had already been reported. However, since the author was local, I decided to finish the book. I am glad I did as I found the last two main chapters enlightening and thought provoking. His critique of Dan Brown's presentation style and the description of the NSC's objectives was worth the wait.

I actually wanted to give this 3-1/2, but I can say '4' without blushing.
This is a decently done overview of a topic that is sadly lacking decent overviews.
One of the things that I particularly enjoyed was his assessment of each 'secret society', and what he figured its true threat level was.
This isn't a lurid expose, but rather a good attempt to understand and analyze groups that might rather lurk in the shadows, for any number of reasons.

An informative analysis of historical societies that may or may not be threats to the modern world. In the author's afterword I found the most important message; we spend way too much time dwelling upon perceived threats form ancient sources (ie. Illuminati) and ignore the very real modern threats posed by terrorist groups and religious fanatics.

An interesting read. I learned quite a bit about Freemasons, assassins, the Mafia, the Yakuza and other shadowy groups. It's not the best written book in the world (very much "this happened, then this happened"), but the topic is fascinating to me, so I enjoyed it.
