Glenda Millard was born in the Goldfields region of Central Victoria and has lived in the area all her life. The communities she has lived in and the surrounding landscapes have provided a rich source of inspiration and settings for many of her stories.

It was not until Glenda's four children became teenagers that she began to write in her spare time. She is now a full-time writer.

Apart from writing, some of Glenda's favorite things are Jack Russell Terriers, hot-air ballooning, making and eating bread and pizza in the wood-fired oven that her husband built in the back yard, and reading books which either make her laugh or cry.

Glenda has published six picture books, three junior fiction titles, short stories and two young adult titles. 'The Naming of Tishkin Silk' was shortlisted in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards and for the NSW Premier's Literary Awards.

Another delightful, gentle, warm hug of a novel. Every child, in fact every person should have a Kingdom of Silk family in their lives.
I've said it before, but how did Glenda Millard get to be so wise.

Favourite bits....

Her description of feeling loved and cared for.... 'the secret part that felt like chocolate melting in the quiet dark inside him'
Mr Kadri calling Perry 'Superior Man' instead of Superman.
About discovering 'windows of opportunity'.
"Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's no good.'
'Words are just words, Layla, and they can only change things if we let them.'

After a bit of a slow start recapping the events of previous books in The Kingdom of Silk series, this quiet and sensitive book focuses on Perry Angel's efforts to express himself. Although Indigo and Violet are featured strongly, this is really their adopted brother's book.

Perry is slow and finds learning difficult. Emotionally isolated, he struggles with words and understanding rules like not climbing over the school fence or going home before the last bell rings. He has trouble knowing when to go to the toilet and that it's not right to shout at helpful bus drivers.

He wonders if he was ever held in a mum's arms before he was abandoned in a small suitcase with five gold letters on it. He loves his Superman costume, his dog Blue and his friend Jenkins who sits beside him on the days he's at school and doesn't mind explaining the same thing eleven times.

But when some teenagers laugh at Perry's drawings, his friends know they need to take a hand. Mr Kadri of the Colour Patch Café, who insists on calling Perry 'Superiorman' when he's dressed in his superhero costume, has a gift he hopes will make a difference: some vivid paints he calls 'the colours of paradise'.

As ever, Glenda Millard demonstrates her mastery of gentle lyricism and nostalgic poesy in this fourth book in the series.

The full star rating reflects how this series is getting under my skin. I can't remember when I last read a story (taking the series together as one extended story) which has left me wanting so much to be kinder, to be more thoughtful, to take more time, to be gentler. This volume continues the story of Perry Angel, the child fostered by the Silk family in volume 3. Learning difficulties, what they can mean and don't have to mean, is just one of the strands explored, again with enormous empathy.

Meskipun aku rada sulit memahami kejadian-kejadian yang dialami, tapi banyak sekali kalimat-kalimat thoughtful yang aku temukan which makes this book delightful. Btw, buku ini punya ilustrasi yang cantik 🥰.

Ahh... Where have these books been all my life? So lyrical and wise. I’ve found four more at the library, thank goodness.

Not my favourite of the series. One too many characters detracted from Perry's story.
