When Kristin Sullivan arrives at Sunset High from Minnesota, she feels like a fish out of water. Beverly Hills is a world apart from her mid-western hometown, and her sophisticated classmates make her feel hopelessly naive.
Befriended by Monica Miller, a fellow student and a professional actress, Kristin feels her luck start to change. She auditions for a part in the school's rock video and lands the lead! Best of all, the director, a handsome senior named Grady Larkin, seems smitten with her.
The trouble is, Kristin's made an enemy, too. Gorgeous, sexy Nadia Lawrence has her eye on Grady. Now she's furious and vows to ruin the new girl. Will innocent Kristin become victim or victor in the struggle that erupts among the teens of California's most spectacular town?
A fun intro to the Sunset High series which I have the vaguest memories of reading as a kid.
Kristin's family moves to Beverly Hills from Minnesota (sound familiar?) because of her father's medical practice. She has a hard time assimilating with the rich BH kids -- with all their BMWs, nice clothing and different hairstyles, she just doesn't fit in.
She gets cast in a music video project by Grady, a hotshot director student at the school, and they fall in love! She also meets good friend Monica, arch-nemesis Nadia, Nadia's right-hand woman JT, rich burnout Denis, and more.
I have collected the whole series, so I'll keep reading-- it was breezy and quick.
All the crazysauce is in this book. Some favorites, in list form: 1. Psycopathic Nadia who pushes a recovering addict to go back on drugs; creates a complex popularity ranking system based on stellar achievements such as who girls' parents are; and who is really, really interested in dating her daddy. 2. Midwest farm girl Kristen (nope, totally not Brenda Walsh...she doesn't have a twin brother) who falls in instalove with Grady. 3. Some bits where the editor clearly fell asleep: store canapés for canopies was a favorite. Oh, and Nadia "heaves" a couple of times. Not sure what this was supposed to be but, authors, this word does not mean what you think it means. 4. And look at that cover! David Hasselhof is totally dating Rachel Ray!
Unfortunate 80s fashion choices: jumpers (actually not sure what this is but guessing it isn't a sweater), Camp Beverly Hills(!), high heels with ankle socks, a single long earring, and too many others to name.
Clueless meets Gossip Girl but very Hollywood and in the 80s. Loved all the LA references, insane outfit descriptions, made up slang (“that is so tote!”), Hollywood biz stuff, and HS drama. There’s also a MAKEOVER! Fun, light read. They should’ve made this a TV series.
Silky Perry Ellis suits! Shopping at Camp Beverly Hills on Rodeo! Grabbing bagels at Nate n' Al's deli on Beverly! Spago, Ma Maison, and all the other fabulous 80's Beverly Hills references you never thought you needed until now 🤣
A cute love letter to the oh-so-glamourous Bev Hills, this is a light, fluffy and quick read. Our protag Kristen from Minnesota is a proverbial fish out of water when her family moves to So Cal and she has to navigate the wild and fast life lived in Beverly Hills, lol. LOVED all of the fun references, awesome outfits, and silly slang ("SO TOTE" hahaha), and bonus points for the Academy Awards scene where the rich bitch of Sunset High gets to go with her movie producer dad and hob nob with the likes of Carrie Fisher and Joan Collins. The dream we all dream of 🤣🤩💖
