Syd Chaplin: A Biography

Rate this book
This is the first study of the life and art of Sydney Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin's brother, a person notable not only for his importance in establishing his brother's career, but in several other early Hollywood enterprises, including the founding of United Artists and the Syd Chaplin Aircraft Corporation, America's first domestic airline. Sydney also had a successful film career, beginning in 1914 with Keystone and culminating with a string of popular films for Warner Bros. in the 1920s. Sydney's film career ended in 1929 because of an assault charge by an actress. This incident proved to be only the last in a string of scandals, each causing him to move to another place, another studio, or another business venture.

Interesting book- Sydney Chaplin was an interesting man and entertaining in his own right- skillful and talented ass opposed to the genius of his brother. He was sharp witted and intelligent as the large selection of his letters inclused demonstrates.

I just didn't end up liking him - something not entirely savory about him, and a rather distasteful sex scandal put an end to his film carer. He assisted Charlie for years after that and proved to be a valuable aid- but to me it says something that Charlie never put him in any of his features- and Charlie would put ANY of his old acquaintances in a bit part.

Interesting to read about Charlie's brother

Sydney Chaplin just gets mentioned in passing in books about the early movies. I was happy to read his biography. It's well researched. I never got a real feel for the man, but the book takes a comprehensive look at his activities.
