With just the right blend of laughter and romance, Geralyn Dawson weaves an air of enchantment in her tales of old-time Texas, with characters who charm their way right into our hearts. Now she pairs a handsome thief and an unconventional beauty to search for treasure -- and follow the trail of adventure known as love....SHE'S UP TO HER EARS...

Soaking in a therapeutic mud bath, Maggie St. John suddenly finds herself snuggled up against the slickest thief in Texas, Gentleman Rafe Malone. Raised by pirate "grandfathers" to be a lady, Maggie would prefer a more trustworthy man to help recover a treasure hidden years before. But with time and cash in short supply, she'll do anything to protect her "papas" and save their spa on Lake Bliss -- even put her fortune and future in the hands of a notorious rogue.

HE'S HEAD OVER HEELS.

Rafe Malone retired from a life of crime to raise horses, though sometimes he misses the excitement of a good escapade. So when a band of elderly pirates makes him a provocative offer, he's game...and he's captivated by their vivacious ward, Maggie St. John. Soon Rafe is swimming an underground river hunting hidden riches -- and trying to figure out just how to hold on to his hide and steal the most valuable pirate's prize of all...Maggie's heart.

After reading the BAD LUCK BRIDES series, I was ready to settle back and enjoy another of the same genre. Wrong.

I knew we were in trouble when 4 elderly swashbucklers come upon a man napping in an arid spot in Texas, miles from the Gulf of Mexico. They want to hire him to steal some treasure. Gentleman Rafe Malone has to turn them down because (in part one - The Wedding Raffle – see below) he turned in his thieving tools in order to keep his neck (out of the Texas Rangers’ noose).

Since Rafe has nothing to do but run his ranch, he escorts the has-been pirates to meet their granddaughter. Wavering between encouraging Rafe to join them and threatening to present him with hacked-off body parts (if he messes with their granddaughter); Rafe becomes intrigued.

Maggie St. John is all Rafe was expecting and more. Rafe finds that he is being asked to steal back the old pirates’ treasure so they can save their spa at Lake Bliss, Texas. Oh, and the swine who stole their property wants to marry Maggie.

If you have read any of the other reviews, some consider this to be one of the greatest novels of all time. Sorry, this book just didn’t speak to me. It seemed more like a cartoon.

I read this book since it was written by Geralyn Dawson, a local author. She came to my third grade classroom to help us write a class book years ago when our Spring Garden Cougar Publishing Company was getting started. We enjoyed her help and her visit to our class. I think she was the aunt of one of my students.

This book was a romance novel so it was a light read. I liked it since it took place in Texas and had good characters.

Rafe is a former thief turned horse breeder with a lot of guilt and issues regarding honor and his word. He gave his promise not to go back to stealing, but he misses the life of adventure. So he's intrigued when four former pirates show up and goad him into assisting them on stealing back their pirate's treasure. Because they need it to keep their home and to save their "daughter" from losing the only cure to her rheumatism. This daughter, Maggie, was raised a hellion but she's trying to keep tame so her four fathers don't lose their only home to the cheating magnate who owns the deed to their land. But she also craves adventure and she sees a chance for one with Rafe. But when he learns he'd have to break his word in order to make their dreams come true, he balks. And this is where the conflict between Maggie and Rafe come into play. Although they're almost certainly in love, they're now at cross purposes. Because Rafe will not go back on his word and Maggie soon learns that she would give anything to prevent him needing to.

This author has proven to be consistent for good stories. I don't know that I liked this as much as the first in the series, but I still liked it a lot. I had no problem with the length as I was engaged throughout the story. Rafe is pretty much an ideal hero, with his rakish personality, charming smile and honorable behavior. Although his seducing Maggie and being ready to walk out of her life wasn't that honorable, but he thought he was doing what was best for her...and he did promise. Maggie was stubborn and rash and only once or twice did I think she kind of crossed into TSTL territory. The story provided adventure and enough angst to satisfy this angst lover. There was one particularly heart-wrenching little spat, which unfortunately was not discussed or wrapped up sufficiently for me, but I didn't mind in comparison to everything else that was just fine. The four papas were fun. I worried that they'd get annoying at first, but they worked really well as an ensemble and played off each other in great ways. They even had little quirks that were really funny (like the successive name-calling for the magnate guy). I expected it would get irritating, but it so did not. The humor infused here was pretty much perfect - not OTT at all.
