In a succinct but attractive narrative, Paulo Carneiro tells the story of Sephardi Jews from the moment they were thrown out of Spain and Portugal, their coming to Brazil along with the Dutch and helping found the city of Recife to, later on, be sent away once more and ending up in North America in the place where today stands the city of New York. In the middle of it all, Carneiro also focuses on the New-Christians or Cripto-Jews all over the world. This aberration created by prejudice and, of course, the Inquisition affected lots of Brazilian families, many more than what people might think, and we have a huge amount of Jewish descendants..
