WWII Jewel of the Mall is a full-color photographic book on the WWII Memorial with an introduction by Senator Robert Dole and photographs by renowned photographer Stephen R. Brown. The photographs are exclusive never-to-be duplicated images. Panoramic scenes of the new face of the Mall comprise seventy-five pages of the book while the rest are a documentary of the creation and installation of the sculpture and marble ornamentation.
A couple of my WW2 Veteran buddies, Bob Cook (USAAF) and James Chandler (USMC) partook of the Honor Flight. Honor Flight is a program that arranges for transportation and a short stay in Washington DC so vets of WW2 and Korea can visit the monuments of those wars.
They traveled with 23 other Texas Veterans. Bob, who turned 94 during the trip, was a little dismayed that he wasn't the oldest, there was a 95 yr old.
They joked that the 88-89 year olds must have lied about their ages when they enlisted.
Once in DC they were assigned a guardian who is usually a service member. Bob's was an Army major, she'd served a tour in Afghanistan.
It was a whirlwind event. They didn't have any time for other activities. At the monuments, as a safety precaution, every one had to be in a wheel chair, whether you thought you needed it or not.
That night there was a dinner and Bob had arranged for his co-pilot, who lives in the DC area, to be there, he hadn't seen him since August 1944. Their last flight was crash landing their shot up B-24. I told Bob, gee I hope he wasn't mad at you for that!
Bob brought me this book from his adventure, 'Jewell of the Mall', a coffee table type photo book covering the creation and display of the WW2 monument. A treasure for me!
About 40% of the photos are of the construction phase which the photographer Stephen Brown had access to and the rest of the presentation.
Wonderful capturing of a very special creation. The way Stephen Brown employs some extraordinary natural lighting effects to convey human strength, sacrifice, purpose and pathos all at once is incomparable.
The revised edition of the WWII MEMORIAL: Jewel of the Mall has finally arrived. It is twenty eight pages larger with thicker paper and cover stock. It was a great luxury to go back through the 35,000 images from the original project and 30,000 more recent images from the past eight years since the Memorial opened. We selected new photos and tweaked old ones. The change to a horizontal format is more in keeping with the Memorial’s low profile and gives the book a “roomy” feel. The new WWII MEMORIAL: Jewel of the Mall also contains more in depth coverage of the construction process and a sixteen-page section called “A Living Memorial.” Honor Flight is featured in this section, as are many of the activities that occur on this now most popular National Memorial. http://www.wwiimemorialbook.com
The WWII memorial is one of my favorites. It is beautiful. This book gives people a look at what the site actually is. There is very little written but I found what was included fascinating.
I have not had the opportunity to visit the memorial. I am so glad this book gives such an extrodianary view. The photos glow. I look forward to other works from S. Brown.
