The Frozen Toe Guide to Real Alaskan Livin' both embraces and instructs readers on everything one needs to know to be a true Alaskan, or at least to look the part. Combining both handbook format with anecdotal bits about the author’s own experiences moving to the state, the book advises readers on such topics ranging from winter survival skills to regional fashion to Alaskan dating advice to extreme sports. Learn how to make ice cream from snow, or how to seek out a career in dog mushing. Find out where to travel for weekend trips, and what Alaskans do for entertainment.
I've lived in Alaska since 1998 and think this was an excellent book. Should be required reading for people thinking about moving hear or who want to take an extended vacation. Great mix of authentic, actionable information along with humorous asides. Interesting stories from the author along with interesting interviews with offbeat characters. When you put it down, you'll have a feel for why we like it here in Alaska. And you won't take your partner canoeing. Or be a winter caretaker for an Aleutian cabin. Bonus - book is indexed!
Not a serious read, but there's some good info here for greater enjoyment of this amazing state. The best parts are the insider jokes and taking jabs at local 'customs'. For example, be sure to hang your Christmas lights by September. This is something Alaskans are quite good at, viz. making fun of Alaskans, something the rest of the country might learn from in order to survive.
This book is part memoir, part story-telling, and part relocation/visiting guide and it is HILARIOUS! It is so honest and funny, but yet very informative about relocating and living in Alaska. Even those who aren't planning on moving there (like I am!!!) should read this just for the hysterical stories.
If you really want to know what it's like to live up here in the North, run out and get this book NOW! (but put on your parka, first!) Brooke captures the absurdity of Northern Living to a tee - and she leaves you laughing all the way to the outhouse. Don't miss this instant Alaska classic!
The book was a fun read and it had some useful information. It will provide insight on life in Alaska and would be very useful for anyone thinking of moving there.
