Join Bear as he celebrates his birthday with a party for all his friends. Learn about birthday activities as the bears hunt for presents, play party games and blow out the candles on a Bear-size birthday cake.
My 3 month old loved this one. There’s tons to look at on every page, and the colors are bright and fun. I prop this one up for her to look at during tummy time and it holds her attention well!
Finally, a kid's counting book where you're not actually required to count. And yes, I'm serious.
Most counting books take one of two approaches: 1. A series of related things (i.e. types of food, Pride and Prejudice items, etc.) with 1 on the first page, 2 on the second, etc.; 2. A story told through counting, for example, as all the ladybugs disappear, one by one, in 10 Little Ladybugs. I love counting books!
But this one is fun because it takes a different approach. It's a story about Bear's Birthday. On the first page he blows up 10 balloons, and then the story continues to go on with things that he does with friends at his birthday. Never again are the balloons mentioned, and you can read the story without ever saying a number besides "10." But on every single page there is a number in the corner, and on every page one of the balloons has disappeared. So you can read just the story, have just a numbers experience, or do both, depending on you and your child's mood. Fun and original.
I've found others titles in this series just okay, but I really liked this one. Its a counting book, but can be read as just a story aside from the final page. There is a number in the bottom corner that tells the number of balloons on each page spread. As the cat gets each one, the number lessens, but the cat is never the focus of the action. But the counting doesn't end there. You can count the bears hiding during hide and seek (it took us more than one reading to find all ten bears), or count the chairs in musical chairs, or count the pieces of cake. Natalie loved the story just because it was about a birthday party. :)
It’s Bear’s birthday. He is having a party and all his guests are bears. They play hide-and-seek and musical chairs and Bear opens his gift and blows out his candles. Then everyone goes home.
A simple story about a birthday party that could be about a little child but has little moments that make it clear it is about a bear.
“Bear blows out his candles with one big puff. When he slices his cake, there’s just enough.”
Illustrations are good for a lap-read or read-alone, especially with the counting activity listed at the end of the book. For a storytime choice, it seems more for a toddler group or maybe a very young preschool. The rhyming seemed a little clunky to me. My favorite part: the cat's face when it popped a balloon.
This may be my favorite of the Bear books so far. As usual, the illustrations are wildly colorful and detailed. The focus is on numbers and counting backward from 1 to 10, and the balloons in each picture nicely illustrate this concept. I like the balloons summary at the end, and there are multiple fun items to count in each picture.
I love that this book has English and Spanish on each page. It counts down from 10, while celebrating Bear's birthday. The English version also rhymes, which could make it more enjoyable for readers.
This book has a little bit more complicated vocabulary in French, but it's a lot of fun and there are so many interactive possibilities. Love that it's in both English and French!
