Starowieyski is, beyond any doubt, one of the hidden gems of Polish graphic art. He has been a dramatic designer of posters for many years producing quite surreal and "baroque" designs which place a great stress on the human anatomy, pierced flesh, skulls and sex. Rok 1699 is, in many ways, a retrospective of his work and a superb introduction to his output for those who are less acquainted with him. Its main focus is on his "Theatrical Drawing workshops" which take place over a number of days and in which his drawings evolve as he enters into a dialogue with both his audience and his model. No words can prepare the reader for the superb imagery that lies within...
